Introduction

I discovered how strong I was when my body was at its weakest. My physical and mental body could no longer think, move, or function properly.  My life and health were abruptly rerouted on a path that was scary and unknown. 

 

Eventually, I knew I had to make a choice. Who was going to be in control of my future health and life, Lyme disease, or me? 

 

I chose me. 

 

I chose to trust and listen to my body so I could continue to thrive, learn, teach, and live a life of purpose. 

 

I chose to view my life from a new perspective to create my place in this new world of chronic pain and Lyme disease. 

 

Within this new view of living with multiple diagnoses, symptoms, and pain, I practiced the alternative healing tools and methods in this

book so that I could reclaim my health and start creating a life I was in love with again. 

I want the same for you.

I was able to embrace and change my experience and relationship with Lyme disease and other co-infections to help me release my fears, heal, and transform them into a story of purpose. That is what I am sharing on these pages. I wrote this book to connect people and remind all of us that we are not alone. We are on this healing journey together.  

 

I am not an authority on treating, diagnosing, and/or treating Lyme disease or any other chronic disease and illness. I am however an authority on living with chronic pain and the symptoms of this disease and my other related diagnoses. I also have a master’s degree in public health. 

 

Please note that Lyme disease and other diseases/illnesses/symptoms are profoundly serious and could be life-threatening. They require proper medical attention and care from a qualified healthcare provider or team. 

 

This book is not to be used as a substitute for your medical care and attention. Your life and health are important and seeking proper medical care is a priority. This book is a guide to provide you with alternative healing tools and activities to learn, practice, and empower yourself to become your own advocate to help you think better, feel better and live better in mind, body, and spirit as a whole. 

We were born to live our highest potential even with our chronic illnesses, diagnoses, and symptoms. Sure, it was easier to plan our future dreams and goals when we had the energy, focus, and felt well. Even though our path has been temporarily derailed, it does not mean we stop believing, stop having hope, and stop having a purpose. 

It only means we need to look at and approach our health and live our best lives differently. Sometimes all we need is a simple reminder, some guidance to gently nudge us and give us permission to start envisioning, creating, and living new dreams and achieving new goals.

My story focuses on my experience with Lyme disease and my personal healing process, but this could easily be your story too. 

 

This book was written for everyone who lives with any type of chronic pain, symptoms, and illness. This book is for those who are still seeking answers and support. The message in these pages will provide you with hope when you experience the ups and downs in your personal healing journey. 

There will be moments and days where you feel like you are succeeding and moving forward. There will be days where you feel like your health took a huge step backward. You may question your life, your purpose, and more. This is where hope comes in, the key ingredient that saved me and keeps me going.

Often by the time a patient presents to our dental

offices with teeth that are blackened, broken, rotted,

and crumbling from their methamphetamine use, they

are embarrassed by their unattractive smiles and overwhelmed

with dental pain. Similarly, as dentists, we

are often equally overwhelmed by the magnitude of

decay and uncertain about which aspects of treatment

(preventive, restorative, surgical, or prosthetic) to prioritize

and initiate. We may mistakenly develop treatment

plans that do not take into account the decreased

salivary flow, increased oral acidity, increased plaque

levels, increased bruxism, and increased sugar consumption

associated with methamphetamine use, and

subsequently provide treatment that has no real chance

of reversing the cycle of poor oral health for these

patients. Our treatment plans may also be a mismatch

for our patient’s precarious financial situation, which

may include unemployment, homelessness, and a lack

of insurance. We may be so focused on saving that one

tooth with a root canal, crown lengthening, build-up

and crown, that we have depleted the patient’s finances

to address the other 31 teeth which are also blackened,

broken, and rotted! We may even put on our superhero

costumes, hidden underneath our surgical scrubs, and

develop heroic treatment plans that include full-mouth

reconstruction with bone grafts, sinus lifts, implants,

and crowns that shortly succumb to peri-implantitis,

periodontitis, and recurrent caries. Our treatment

plans may also not take into account the most important

factor that drives success or failure: the patient!

We may place implants in patients who go for days

without brushing, or who “nourish” themselves with

energy drinks, caffeinated sodas, and candy bars. As

a result, our best laid plans fail, and our patients’ oral

conditions remain in a state of disrepair and disease.

Therefore, we must approach treatment for our patients

with meth mouth both cautiously and realistically, and

utilize preventive, restorative, surgical, and pain management

strategies to address the myriad of problems

facing both the patient and the dentist

My Story

For as long as I can remember, I have had an indescribable desire to understand life. Throughout my life, I always felt that something was missing, but I didn’t know what it was.

In simple words, I kept asking myself, “What the hell is this life all about? What is going on? And why?”

Okay, we go through kindergarten, school, high school, and then college; some get married, have children, find a career, buy a house… But the inevitability of death was like a black cloud that forced me to wonder, “What is it all about?”

As I grew up, this desire became a sense of unease at the back of my mind, which made me feel incomplete and restless.

No one, myself included, could stop me from pondering life. I was desperately searching for the meaning of it all. Of course, at the time, I could not tell where such a search would take me or what innumerable hardships I would have to endure. Later, I learned that if I could work out what was going on with me or what was happening to me, things would be much easier. But there was no one available to help me with this, or at least I didn’t think there was.

In retrospect, this longing brought me into “spectator mode”—observation of the theater of life—a situation in which I was looking at life as a though it was a play, but one in which I was participating, meaning that I identified with the characters on stage.

At around the age of thirty, I experienced a critical and overpowering turning point. After going through a confusing period, I woke up one morning with a dreadful emptiness. It felt like a big black gaping hole had opened in my chest. The words that jump to mind when I remember this feeling are, “all dead!” I had a very acute sense of loss, as though everything I had been until that moment was now gone. All I knew and thought and felt about myself and life in general, had died that morning and I found myself living in a bubble.

There was no connection between me, and reality and life as I knew them.

The feeling could be compared to eating food without the senses of taste and smell; without these basic senses, you lose the desire to eat. And in the same way, I lost the desire to live. What followed was a total collapse of mind and body. I experienced panic attacks, and simply standing up was a struggle. What I remember most is that I knew I had to hold on despite the strong desire to completely collapse, let go, and never get up again, because I did not want to worry my family.

Not able to understand what was happening to me, I did not want to get into a situation where I had to explain myself. Deep down, I felt insulated and lonely, and all I wanted was to be left alone.

Exact words failed me, and all I could describe was a state of tremendous fear, loss of control, and restless hell, and an inability to understand any of it. And so, I lived trapped in a kind of furnace that burned me alive. I was completely detached from reality, and my sense of identity was utterly gone as though it had never even existed.

After a few months, I began to see the simple beauty in my surroundings: a blooming flower, the shining sun, or a simple good morning. I welcomed every one of those little gifts that came my way, and I began to see the simple yet wondrous beauty in everything. And so, I learned to enjoy every little thing in all its greatness.

Despite those newly found comforts, I was still troubled because my fundamental questions about the meaning of life remained unanswered; my inability to find the answers meant that true peace still eluded me.

Over the course of a period that was relatively calm, words started to visit me just as I was on the verge of sleep. I felt a compelling need to write them down, and so I did. At first, words would come only at night, but soon, they began to surprise me at any hour. I would hear a word from someone and all of a sudden, an entire scenario would unfold before me, and I would have to write it down. At that time, I went everywhere with a small notebook, ready to write whatever came to me whenever it came. The material was absorbed into me like into a dry sponge, and I finally realized the answers to my deepest questions.

I realized that the missing part I was looking for in my life was myself.

In this manner, short and concise chapters took shape. After a few months, I had enough written words that the idea of a book came to life. Some of the things that I had written took me a while to understand. It took a while for them to crystallize into a book. 

The book, Perception vs. Truth, is designed to introduce you to yourself. It is designed to introduce you to a different perspective of you and the world, one that you may not be accustomed to. Furthermore, it is designed to enable you to see how you are influenced and how you can influence yourself and your surroundings.

Perception vs. Truth holds the answers to all the questions that took me on a life-changing journey. I hope that reading it will inspire you to find your own answers to life.

Wisdom of Water

Wisdom of Water means that whatever I write, I’m not necessarily trying to say something concrete. You may say that I am painting with words. My writing is a set of different perspectives on each situation. I am not trying to make a specific point; I just wish to maintain awareness of many different and diverse points of view. Everything is valid; everything is circumstantial according to one’s own point of view.

Wisdom of Water means not getting stuck on words, definitions, etc. Like water, life seeks balance. And so do we. When we understand that there are endless ways to view each situation, and we use our ability to learn from any outcome, we become like water—we maintain our balance, and gradually, over time, we become wiser than before.

Spiritual Search

If you have an unexplainable yearning to know the nature of the world in which you live, then Perception vs. Truth is the book for you. To know the world is to know the “I” that you are. It is called self-knowledge, and it can only be known by one’s own wisdom.

Never be satisfied with the answers that come from others. Somehow, we learn to place more faith in the wisdom of others than we do our own. Listen to people, but use their answers as a guideline only.

Perception vs. Truth is about being aware and acknowledging yourself, and by doing so, life will become simple. Enjoy the adventure of your own self and discover the depths within, which can give you the answers you seek. Each of us is the expert of his or her life. Remember, whatever comes from deep within comes in the form of intuition, and you have to become more aware of that intuition, and learn to trust it.

Finally, Perception vs. Truth talks about the Promised Land, which we all reside in.

Introduction

Illusion

Some say that the vast majority of humans are sleepwalkers—people who live while sleeping. It would be truer to say that they live within an illusion—an illusion of their own individual creation.

Illusion, as one does not know what reality is facing him.

What is the source of it? And how is it created?

If we presume that life is like a dream, we could say that in order to dream, there is a need for a dreamer. There is a correlation between what one thinks and believes, and what one is actually experiencing. The term “illusion” is used because one does not fully comprehend the nature of his/her reality; therefore, we may refer to him/her as being “asleep.” One needs to be “awake” in order to understand. One has to realize that the common denominator in everything that is happening to him/her is simply oneself.

Once you are awakened to the fact that the cause of everything is within you, all your decisions you will make will be directly related to your perspective. Your own perceptions will be determined by this viewpoint. One who succeeds in having no viewpoint at all ought to have a very broad and profound perception. “Ought to” because it is impossible to adopt “no viewpoint” without actually having one. Any effort on someone’s part will constitute adopting a viewpoint; therefore, one is always condemned to remain as he/she is.

Although this paradox seems like a maze with no way out, this is where true liberation resides. True understanding leads to surrender, which in turn leads to freedom. However, when a person wears a mask (a personality, ego), that person cannot be free. Unknowingly, this person values their mask more than their freedom.

The difficulty is how to be free from the mask; free of conditioning.

When someone surrenders to the truth, they stop being dominated by their persona and their viewpoint. A person can give many reasons for liking something but the truth is, we discover what we like; we don’t choose what we like.

Who you truly are and what you love in life is not a matter of choice

About the Author

Eyal Cohen was born in 1968. At the age of thirty, after a powerful and life-changing experience, his perception of reality was transformed completely, and over the next twelve years, he immersed himself in study as he sought to understand what had happened to him. He delved into the philosophies and wisdom behind the teachings of Buddhism, Zen, Taoism, Sufism, Mystic Judaism, Mystic Christianity, and more; and he tried to understand the state of the world by researching numerous leading thinkers of past and present times, such as Noam Chomsky, Friedrich Nietzsche, Socrates, Confucius, to name but a few.
His years of research, combined with his own experiences and knowledge, gave him a unique way of looking at life and the world that we live in. It was this unique perspective that gave birth to the book Perception vs. Truth.

About the Author
Joseph Burgo began writing short stories when he was 12 years old, wrote and published his first fantasy novel with Pocket Books (Simon & Schuster) at the age of 23, and then went on to become a clinical psychologist and author of self-help books. His articles and commentary have appeared in major publications such as The New York Times, The Atlantic, the Washington Post, and USA Today, as well as on sites such as CNN, CNBC, Forbes, Vox, and Glamour. He also contributes regularly to Psychology Today and writes the popular blog After Psychotherapy where he discusses personal growth issues from a psychodynamic perspective.

‘Excuse me, excuse me.’ I push my way through the crowd of groupies cluttering the courtyard by the backstage door. There’s some jostling as they hesitate, reluctant to give up the precious spots where they’ve been waiting for who knows how long.

They turn to look at me, at first with disdain – and then, upon seeing what I’m carrying, disdain grudgingly turns to understanding and envy.

Fuck, this is awkward. 

I start to feel nauseated. I can’t believe I am doing this. Maybe I should turn back.

Who the fuck do I think I am? I don’t belong here.

Every cell in my body wants to run, but I resist the urge to turn around and instead continue to put one foot in front of the other, slowly moving through the group towards the front.

Come on, Natalie. Breathe. Use your tools.

I’m having a mental block, and it takes me a moment to run through my usual coping tactics.

Okay, an affirmation.

Ikeep moving forward.

I’ve got this. I’ve got this. I’ve got this.

Nausea still rises. But I keep breathing. Then it dawns on me: now would be a great time to test my new theory about affirmations.

Okay. I’ve fucking got this. I’ve fucking got this. I’ve fucking got this.

Focusing on the power the extra word gives the affirmation, the stormy ocean that is my belly calms, and my energy and confidence surge. I soon reach the front few rows of fans; now I can see the security dude guarding the door. He’s massive and looks like he crushes butterflies for fun.

Shit. Perhaps I should go back? What the fuck am I doing?

But I can only imagine what the groupies’ faces will look like if I turn around. I’m such a people pleaser that the mere thought of their faces, unimpressed by my failure, drives me on.

No. I’ve fucking got this. I’ve fucking got this. I’ve fucking got this.

I push through the last of them. The ones at the front are the hardcore fans; they’ve probably been here since early this morning. I expect them to resist. But they part for me, as if out of respect that I’ve made it this far.

Butterfly crusher sees me and raises an eyebrow.

Okay, game on. Come on. I can fucking do this.

‘Hi,’ I say. ‘Um, I’m here for Justin Timberlake.’ The lie feels clunky in my mouth.

Butterfly crusher says nothing, and so I turn my body slightly so he can see what I’m carrying.

‘Oh, right.’ He looks relieved. He’s probably dealt with a few too many obsessed groupies in his time. ‘For massage. Sure, come on in.’

A rush of endorphins flood my body as I realise that’s the first gatekeeper down.

Hell yes, I’ve fucking got this.

He pushes open the doors, and after manoeuvring myself and my table through them, I find myself at the end of a very long corridor with multiple doors. I recognise the familiar warren of backstage. 

Ah, shite, where to now?

I turn back to the closing doors. Seeing my questioning face, Butterfly Crusher catches a door and holds it open. ‘It’s Joey you’ll be wanting, the tour manager. He’s at the end on the left, name on his door.’

‘Thank you!’ I smile in relief.

Yep, I’ve fucking got this.

Iwalk with confidence into the depths of backstage.

I can hear what’s possibly a sound check going on in the belly of the building. There’s a buzz of pre-show adrenaline in the air. People dressed predominantly in black jeans with oversized black tees and sporting hair overdue for a haircut nod at me and say hello in voices out of an American sitcom. I smile and return the greeting, feeling a bit like I am in an American sitcom myself.

The last door on the left has an askew laminated sign attached to it reading ‘Joey’. I try not to look too closely at the naked cartoon man that someone has drawn in the corner.

The door is ajar, but I knock anyway.

‘Yep, come in!’ the sitcom voice calls from within. I push open the door to find a man sitting behind a makeshift desk, wearing – surprise! – a black t-shirt and in need of a haircut.

‘Hey, Joey,’ I say, ‘I’m checking in to see if anyone’s needing massage tonight.’

Please don’t let this be all in vain.

‘Oh yeah, cool, sure.’ Joey gets to his feet. ‘Let me find you a space to set up in. That would be great.’

Boom, second gatekeeper down! Hell yeah, I’ve fucking got this.

Joey finds me a small room that’s not in use and I set up, putting out some of my own laminated signs to direct people to me.

Iwish I could tell you that I did in fact get my hands on Justin Timberlake that night, but it was mainly crew and his band. Big American roadies who asked for deep pressure and then took it back when they felt my strength, making jokes about how they hadn’t realised they’d be beaten up by a woman today. And small, toned dancers, their overworked bodies hungry for a therapeutic touch.

Ileft that evening with my pockets full of cash and, more importantly, my confidence flying. Not only had I done something completely out of my comfort zone – I had nailed it.

Back when I lived in London, I massaged musicians backstage and celebrities in their penthouses weekly, through the company I was contracted to. Here in Australia, I didn’t have the backing of the company, and I missed the work and the money. When I heard Justin Timberlake was playing Brisbane, I wondered who of my colleagues might have been assigned to him in London. Then I thought why not me, here, in Australia? Could I just turn up and wing it?

This thought reflected the shift which had been happening within me recently. Since becoming a mother, I’d found my fierce. The lioness within me had awakened: the mama bear, the protector.

This fierceness was echoed in my journaling, my thoughts, in the workings of my inner world, and now it was manifesting in my outer world. I was doing things I hadn’t thought myself capable of.

And I started colouring all parts of my life with this shift. This mama was claiming her space in the world. This mama was making shit happen. 

Specifically, my affirmations. I had started dropping an F-bomb into my affirmations.

And fuck, did it work! My affirmations felt stronger, fiercer, more reachable. It was like giving them a turbo boost.

They felt awesome.

But let’s back-track for a moment. Let’s go back to when I first found and fell in love with affirmations. Let’s go back to that decade when Paula Abdul was playing on every ghetto blaster, and no top was complete without shoulder pads.
