The eldest of the three wealthy Garrett brothers, Reese Garrett is in the
middle of a major purchase for his multimillion-dollar oil and gas company,
Garrett Resources. The Poseidon offshore drilling platform venture will
greatly enhance the company’s value.

But when Reese is on a trip out to see the rig, his helicopter crashes,
leaving him hospitalized and two men dead. It’s discovered the chopper
was sabotaged, and Reese is determined to find out who’s behind the
crash—and whether he was the intended target. Then, when his lover,
Kenzie, is accused of her ex-husband’s murder—a man with a
vested interest in the Poseidon deal—clues start pointing to a
connection that puts Reese, Kenzie and her young son in the sights of a
killer.

From the Texas heat to the Louisiana bayous, Reese and his brothers must
track down the truth before the body count gets any higher.

Chapter One

Galveston, Texas

Last Day of July

Seconds after the chopper lifted off the pad, Reese felt the odd vibration.  Along with the pilot and co-pilot and five members of the crew, the Eurocopter EC135 was headed for the Poseidon offshore drilling platform.

For a moment, the ride leveled out and Reese relaxed against his seat.  As CEO of Garrett Resources, the billion-dollar oil and gas company he owned with his brothers, he was always searching for the right investment to expand company holdings, the reason he was flying out to the platform.

For months he’d been working with Sea Titan Drilling, the owner of the offshore rig, to complete the five-hundred-million-dollar purchase, an extremely good value when the average price of a similar rig was around six-fifty.

The vibration returned and with it came a grinding noise that put Reese on alert.  The men in the cabin began to glance back and forth and shift nervously in their seats.  A sharp jolt, then the chopper seemed to fall out of the sky.  It climbed again, began to dip and sway, dropped then climbed as the pilot fought for control.

The pilot’s deep voice rumbled through the headset.  “We’ve got a problem.  I don’t want you to panic, but we need to find a place to set down.”

There was definitely a problem, Reese thought, as the vibration continued to worsen.  The chopper was out of control and the whole cabin was shaking as if it would break apart any minute.  His pulse was hammering, his adrenalin pumping.

Along with the men in the crew who rode back and forth from the rig every few weeks, he stared out the window toward the ground.  They were no longer above the heliport.  Clearly the pilot was looking for an open space big enough to handle the thirty-six-foot blade span.  All Reese could see were the rooftops of warehouses and metal commercial buildings.

The chopper kept shaking.  The crew was grim-faced but resigned.  The pilot did something to take the pitch out of the rotors and the chopper started falling.

“No need to worry,” the pilot said.  “We’ll auto-rotate down.  I’ve done it a dozen times.”

Auto rotate down.  Reese knew the concept, the technique helicopter pilots used to land when the engine failed.  The trick was to find a safe place to hit the ground.

Both engines went silent.  The blades were flat now, the wind whistling through them, tying his stomach into a knot.

“Brace for impact,” the pilot said.  Below them, Reese spotted an open flat slab of asphalt in the yard of a small trucking firm–the only possible landing site anywhere around.  Trouble was it didn’t look wide enough to handle the blades.

At the last second, the pilot flared the helicopter in an effort to slow the descent, then the ground rushed up and the chopper hit with a jolt that wracked Reese’s whole body.

For an instant, he thought they were going to make it.  Then one of the spinning rotor blades hit the corner of a building and tore free.  The Plexiglas bubble shattered as the long metal blades exploded into a hundred deadly pieces, careening like knives through the air, slicing into buildings and the cabin of the helicopter.

Reese didn’t feel the impact.  One moment he was conscious, then the world suddenly went black.

Chapter Two

Four weeks later

Dallas, Texas

For McKenzie Haines, her day as Executive Assistant to Reese Garrett, CEO of Garrett Resources, started as usual.  After a few minutes spent with her assistant, Kenzie began her early morning briefing with Reese to go over his daily schedule and discuss what he needed her to do.

Seated across the desk from him in his spacious office, she waited as he finished an unexpected phone call.  With his wavy jet black hair and amazing blue eyes, Reese was one of the best-looking men Kenzie had ever seen.  Keenly intelligent and highly successful, he was a combination of virile masculinity and brooding reserve that attracted women of every age, shape, and size.

She could still see the faint scar on the side of his head near his temple from the helicopter crash that had killed two men and put Reese in the hospital.

At the time of the accident, Kenzie had worked for the company only five months, but in that time, she had come to admire and respect her employer.  She could still recall her sharp stab of fear when his brother, Chase, had phoned to inform her of the accident.

Three days later, Reese was back at his desk, running the company with the iron control he was known for.  Unfortunately, even now, four weeks after the incident, NTSB investigators remained unable to pinpoint the cause of the crash.

Reese’s phone call ended and his dark head came up, his intense blue eyes swinging toward her, locking on her face.  No matter how she worked to ignore it, Kenzie always felt the impact.

“Where were we?” he asked.

“You wanted me to reschedule your visit to the offshore platform.”

“Yes.  I’ve put it off too long already.”

“I probably shouldn’t say this, but after what happened, I don’t blame you.”

The corner of his mouth kicked up.  “Maybe not, but I want this deal done.  We’ve been working on it for months.  We need to finish our due-diligence and make it end.”

“Yes, sir.  Would you like me to go with you?”  Traveling with Reese when he needed her assistance was part of her job, though he hadn’t asked her to go with him the day of the crash, thank God.

One of his rare smiles appeared.  “You want to hold my hand in case I get scared in the chopper?”

Kenzie laughed, a little embarrassed he had hit so close to the truth.  She liked him, admired him.  He could have died that day.  “I just thought you might need me.”

“Not this time,” Reese said.

But Kenzie had watched him these past few weeks.  The helicopter crash still weighed heavily on his mind.  The authorities were investigating and so was Reese.

Kenzie was certain Reese wouldn’t stop until he knew exactly what had happened that day–and why two good men were dead.

Laurie Lancey has always loved the old picturesque bridge over Council Creek; it’s that beauty which gave the town its name.

But then…

A near miss… A chinese fortune cookie with a deadly warning

A murdered co-worker

She knows now the serenity is just a deception. Something sinister is going on here,

And it’s all around her.

Investigator Nick Allyn barely manages to save her when the shots are fired.

“This tells me only one thing, young lady,” he tells her firmly.

“Those bullets were meant for you.

And only you.”

NICK SCOWLED as he poked the button on his phone.

“Allyn .”

“Don’t suppose you’ve seen your performance on

the news yet.” It was Captain’s Carter’s voice.

“No,” he grimaced, “not yet, but I have a feeling

I’m about to.”

“Laurie with you?”

“Yes. Sorry about that, sir. They had her place

surrounded and were beating the doors down. The

cat helped me get rid of them.”

A pause. “That was a cat?”

“Yep.”

“He looked like a panther with a white nose and

a white tail.”

“Yeah. And he’s already taken over my house.”

There was a sigh at the other end. “Eli told me

what happened at the office. Wait until tomorrow

morning, and I’ll meet you there at ten. I still need

her to identify the hitman if she’s seen him.”

Nick turned when he heard it. Laurie was bent

over, holding her belly, and howling with laughter.

He glared at her, but it did no good; it only served to

make her grow louder.

“Sounds like someone is amused,” Carter

growled.

“Does, doesn’t it?” Nick shook his head. “Can I

throw her to the press?”

“No. Keep her. It serves you right. When they

realize who you are and who you work for, the major

will likely order your suspension for three or four

days.”

Nick stared at the phone. “Oh, God, don’t tell me.

Not three more whole days with this little beast.”

“You talking about the cat or the girl?”

“The girl. She’s more of a beast than the cat will

ever be.”

“Right.” The captain sighed. “And if the patrol

has to buy channel three a new camera and

microphone, it may be longer than that. Later.”

Grumbling, Nick set the phone down and moved

into the great room. Taking Laurie by the shoulders,

he leaned down to her ear. “Amused, are you?”

She grinned upward. “Yes. Quite. Blame Molly.

She’s the one that said to turn it on. Oh, Nick. You

were really good.”

“Hm. Glad you think so. You’d better be nice to

me for a change. You may be stuck with me for

several days straight when the major in Jeff city finds

out it was me.”

Her eyes grew wide. “They’ll suspend you?”

“Without pay.” He promptly took the remote out

of her hand. “Go to your room and change clothes

while I figure out what I have to eat around here. Eli

should be bringing back my car any time now.”

Laurie moved toward the hall and stopped.

“Where’s my room?”

“The same as mine at the moment.” He eyed her

until she moved into his bedroom with the little

overnight bag and sat down next to Tips. He

scratched the cat’s big head, and Tips set up a purr

that sounded more like a roar. Nick was sure Laurie

could hear it all the way to the bedroom.

“Hey, buddy. How do you put up with her all the

time?”

One eye opened, then closed again, but the roar

increased.

Nick rose and moved into the kitchen, looking

through the fridge. He sighed. It wasn’t that nothing

was in it. But nothing seemed to go with anything

else. Fajita chicken and Italian spaghetti sauce? He

didn’t think so. Swiveling back toward the counter,

he reached for his phone, punching speed dial

number six.

Eli’s friendly voice answered. “Don’t tell me.

You don’t have anything in the fridge to fix for

supper.”

Nick scowled. “How did you know?”

“Because the last time I was at your house it was

empty. No problem. I’ll bring back your SUV at the

same time. Ben and I already traded, and I gave him

his truck back. I’ll pick you up something. What do

you want?”

“I don’t care. Anything but Chinese. I’ll pay you

when you get here. You can drive straight into the

garage. The kitchen door’s unlocked. Thanks, pal.”

“On my way.”

He heard footsteps and turned to see Laurie

peeking around the corner.

“Um… I can’t get my skirt off. The staples won’t

come loose.”

“Ah.” He reached for her hand. “Come with me.”

He led her around the sofa to sit down, and stopped,

glaring over at Tips. The cat took up over half the

couch. “Your beast will have to go on a diet, that’s all

there is to it.” He moved toward the chair and sat

down.

“Well, you could make him sleep somewhere

else.”

“Be my guest. I notice he’s sleeping in the same

place he did at your house. Wait here.” He left her

and strode into the study, rumbling through the

drawers for a staple puller. When he returned, she

had the remote in her hand.

He promptly removed it. “Oh, no you don’t.”

“I just wanted to see what was going on—” She

gasped as he plopped her over his knee, face down.

“What are you doing?”

“I can get to you better this way. Be quiet.”

Tucking one hand inside the waist of her skirt,

he proceeded to pull out the first one. The second,

he managed to pull with no trouble. The third was

difficult.

“Don’t ruin my skirt.” Blue eyes were meeting

his, as she looked back over her shoulder.

“Do you want them out or not?”

“Yes, but—ow!” Her eyes widened as his hand

connected with her bottom, hard.

“I’ll do my best. Be still.”

She silenced as he went back to work. “Third

one’s out,” he confirmed, “but not without a little

damage to the material.”

A sound in the kitchen caused both of them to

pause.

“It’s me, with your dinner.”

Eli was in the living room before Nick could

bring Laurie upright, and the expression on his

face was amused. “Hey, don’t let me interrupt

anything.”

“You’re not. I’m just trying to get the staples out

of her skirt.”

“Staples,” Eli echoed, his expression curious.

Laurie added quickly, “I broke the zipper when I

got out of bed last night. See, I didn’t know he’d

unzipped my skirt—” She closed her mouth when

Eli began to laugh, and Nick gave her a shake of his

head.

Eli grinned. “No worries. Someday, when Nick

owes me a big enough favor, I’ll call for an

explanation.” He turned. “Your dinner is on the

counter.”

Nick set Laurie on the arm of the chair. “What do

I owe you?”

“Not a thing. This has been pure entertainment

so far. Along with,” he grinned at Nick, “your

performance on the channel three news.”

Nick’s voice was dry. “So glad you enjoyed it.”

“Oh, we all did, except Carter. He has this notion

that Jeff City will be giving him a call.” He looked

from one to the other, chuckling. “We’re all taking

bets on whether or not you’ll lose a week’s pay.”

“Such loyal friends.” Nick tossed back with

sarcasm.

“Yeah, yeah. I know. But seriously, if you need

me to go get you something for supper, call me. I’ve

got nothing to do the rest of the day. Keys?” He

dropped Nick’s on the counter next to the food, and

Nick dug the keys to the pickup out of his pocket and

tossed them across the room.

“Thanks, pal.”

Laurie glared at Nick, sputtering as Eli left. “Why

didn’t you explain about my skirt?”

“Why should I?” He rolled his eyes. “You were

doing so well.” With a grasp on her arm, he once

again had her over his lap. “Only two to go. If you’ll

be still, I’ll be done in a shake. The more you wiggle,

the longer it’ll take. Of course,” he added, “maybe I

should take advantage of your position and take my

hand to your adorable little butt again. Actually, I

like doing that.”

Wide blue eyes met his. “You’re not serious.”

“Aren’t I?”

“I could sue.”

He put a firm hand across her lower back to hold

her in place, grumbling.

“It’d be worth it.”

About the Author

It all started with my fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. J. Ever the elegant, perfectly coiffured lady, gave us an assignment to write a short story and read it aloud to the class.

Mine was about a group of fifth grade kids who went on a weekend camping trip, and encountered a grizzly bear. When it was my turn, I read.

Poor Mrs. J! I began to notice a twitch around her left eye sometime around the approach of the grizzly bear. By the time the body parts began flying, it had increased to her mouth, and her whole face was as white as a sheet.

But she was a trooper, and stayed upright throughout the whole story.

However, the other kids loved the story, because it was about them. Suddenly, I was hooked! Over the years, my writing changed from gory stories (my term as a kid) to space stories. Then spy stories, and finally romance. But the other thing I found I really loved was mystery and romance. I wasn’t satisfied with just reading it. I wanted to write it!

Chapter 1

Brittany Nelson imagined the roaring applause as she looked out into the sea of people attending her graduation ceremony. Was the sound of the large crowd unnerving? She’d lost her hearing as a toddler. Her late grandmother’s singing had been etched in her mind, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t remember hearing anyone else’s voice.

She wiped her sweaty palms on her gown and smiled at her family. Granny Mason waved from the back of the arena. Family matriarch Julia Caroline Mason was nearly 20 years in her grave, but that didn’t stop her from supporting her granddaughters. Brittany waved back, gulping when she saw a stranger talking to Julia. Who was this cheerful co-ed who conversed with the dead? Brittany hadn’t seen the young blond woman around campus, but Atlanta University was a huge school. The dean tapped her on the shoulder, and she read his lips. “Brittany, smile for the photo. We’ve gotta keep this line moving.” Camera flashes stung her eyes, but she complied. Shaking his hand, she posed for a photo and exited the stage.

When she looked back, Granny Mason and her friend had disappeared. The rest of her family stood, applauding and signing, “Way to go,” in American Sign Language. She thanked them as she kept looking for the girl, but she had disappeared.

Not sure if she’d imagined the whole thing, she tried to brush it off and took her seat with her classmates. These strait-laced soon-to-be engineers, stockbrokers and teachers were in full party mode. But Brittany’s thoughts distracted her from celebrating. She kept turning her head back to where her grandmother had been. Her sister, Blake, caught her eye and asked her what was wrong.

“Who was the girl talking to Granny Mason?” Brittany asked.

“Who? Where? I didn’t see Granny.”

“They were sitting right in front of you guys.”

Their grandmother had explained that spirits could hide from each other and clairvoyant people. Maybe Granny Mason didn’t want to be questioned about her newfound friend.

Blake turned, and Brittany saw her gaze zero in on something in the distance. She strained to see what had captured her sister’s attention—Granny Mason and the woman sat five sections away, across the arena.

Brittany watched, puzzled, trying to determine this girl’s identity. It was impossible from her vantage point. She needed to get closer, but the ceremony was still going full swing.

She got her sister’s attention and signed, “Who is that?”

“I have no idea,” Blake signed. “She looks familiar, but I can’t put my finger on where I know her from.”

“Can you get closer?”

Blake stood up and walked toward the women. Brittany watched as Blake smiled, shook the woman’s hand and walked back to her seat. She looked at Brittany and signed, “That woman has spoken to spirits most of her life, and Granny’s helping her figure out how to send an evil one on its way.”

That sounded like her grandmother. “What’s her name?”

Blake scrunched her face. “I forgot to ask.”

“Really?” Brittany laughed. “You’ve always got your head up in the clouds.”

“Yeah—just wait until you have kids. You’ll see how little sleep you get. It messes with your brain.”

There were circles under Blake’s eyes, and her skin was more ashen than before she had become a mom.

I should offer to help with my niece more often

Looking up, Brittany noticed the last row of graduates were in formation, waiting to cross the stage. Soon everyone took their seats again. The band’s music vibrated and reverberated through her body as the university president walked up to the microphone. A sign language interpreter began translating, “Thank you to everyone who has offered their support to our graduates through their respective master’s programs. Now, it’s my pleasure to introduce the Class of 2021!”

A whoosh of air flooded the coliseum stage as the graduates jumped to their feet and threw their caps toward the ceiling. Grad school was over!

A group of Brittany’s friends asked her to pose for some photos. After a dozen selfies, her family made their way down the steps. Before they made it to her, someone tapped her on the shoulder.

Brittany spun around to see Ryan, her fiancé, holding a bouquet of sunflowers. “How did you get away? You’re so close to finishing your residency. Are you sure you should be here?”

Ryan laughed. “Geez. If I didn’t know better, I’d think you didn’t want me here. It’s a pretty damn big deal that you just graduated with your master’s degree in architecture.”

Her cheeks flushed, and she kissed him. “I’m sorry. I’m just surprised. Why didn’t you sit with my parents?”

He shrugged. “My flight arrived late, so I grabbed a seat near the entrance.”

Before she could respond, her dad slapped her on the back, “Way to go, Britt!”

“Now, we need to grab some pictures, too!” her mom said, teary-eyed. “This is our last graduation until Macy graduates from kindergarten.”

They grouped for a few shots until her dad protested, saying they had taken enough photos. “Let’s go get some grub.” Jeremy Nelson was always hungry. He patted his belly and grinned at Brittany, whose mouth was gaping.

“Dad, that was so embarrassing!” She rolled her eyes. “Thank God I’m done with school and won’t see these people ever again.”

Ryan grabbed her hand and kissed it. “I’m feeling a little weird right now, probably just jet lag. You guys go on and grab lunch. I’m going to go back to your apartment and wait for you.”

Brittany locked eyes with him. “Are you sure you’re okay? Do you want to have dinner delivered to my apartment instead?”

He flashed her a smile. “Nope. I’m just tired. I don’t want to ruin your graduation dinner with your family. I’ll be there waiting for you when you get back.” He arched his eyebrow and winked.

Heat radiated from her chin and chest. “Hmm. Sounds like a plan.” She gathered up her belongings and followed her family out to the car.

During the ride to the restaurant, she took in the Midtown Atlanta scenery. She was going to miss walking at Piedmont Park and shopping at Atlantic Station. Finally, they arrived at Mary Mac Tea Room, a comfort food haven, where the sweet tea flowed like water, and plates covered with fried chicken and okra were worth their weight in gold. Indulging in comfort food was worth the calories. The women in their family could pack on pounds quickly, but one meal wouldn’t derail her healthy lifestyle. Calories don’t count today! She’d just take a long walk the next day.

During lunch, her mom turned to her, “So what’s the plan now that you’ve got your degree?”

Good question. What should Brittany do now? Ryan hadn’t committed to either of the lucrative job offers he had waiting for him. She didn’t want to begin her career just to quit after he returned. Sure, she could start a job wherever she wanted and ask him to be happy living there, but that wasn’t the foundation for a healthy marriage. They needed to decide where to live together. That was important to her. Besides, he was supposed to be back by September.

“Brittany…hello—uh, Mom asked you a question.” Blake stared at her.

Brittany shrugged. “I don’t know the answer. With Ryan’s career still up in the air, I’m not ready to put down roots in any city. But I need to make some money so I can afford to live.”

Blake’s eyes widened, and she slapped the table. “Ohmygod! I’ve got the perfect idea. Do you wanna hear it?”

“Um…” Her sister could be impulsive. She had outgrown it somewhat since marrying Clint, but she still had her moments. Brittany cringed. “What’s your suggestion?”

“Don’t make that face! My ideas aren’t that crazy, are they? Wait, don’t answer that!” Blake giggled. “Why don’t you work at the Mason B&B until Ryan comes home? I need all the help I can get, especially with Macy going through the excruciatingly terrible threes.”

Brittany laughed. “You’re forgetting a couple of details. I don’t have the first clue about running a bed and breakfast or raising a kid.”

“Neither did I a few years ago,” Blake said. “And I can teach you what I know about both.”

“True. Well, it would give us a chance to catch up before I move across the country.”

Their mom signed the word for “sad” and pretended to cry. “Please don’t go too far away.”

“Mom, don’t worry. Wherever we live, we’ll visit a lot.”

“I hope so. I want to see all of my grandbabies.” She winked. “Macy needs cousins.”

Brittany scowled and crossed her arms over her chest. “Really, Mom, already?” We’re not even married yet, and the baby talk has already started. Couldn’t she give us at least a year before hounding us? Brittany was in no hurry to start a family and wasn’t sure if she ever wanted one.

Maybe it was selfish, but she wanted to enjoy her career and marriage before considering having children. She knew Ryan wanted to wait to have kids, too. Trips to surf in California, eat pasta in Italy and dive in Turks and Caicos were all on their bucket list.

“I promise, you guys will be the first to know when and if we decide to give up our freedom, but we have a lot of plans that don’t involve little ones.”

Blake laughed. “I remember this pressure all too well. Speaking of which, I miss my little monster, even though she’s been a bit of a nightmare lately. Clint will be relieved when I get back tomorrow. It would be even easier if we had another set of hands. We’d be thrilled if you came to stay with us. Please say you’ll do it.”

Brittany grinned. “Let me talk to Ryan, just to make sure he’s not expecting me to go to Seattle for the summer. Hanging out with you guys sounds like fun. Plus, in between the madness, I could work on my tan.”

“I promise that we’ll make time for fun, and we’ll eat all the delicious Lowcountry food we can handle.”

“You’d better! And, tempting me with shrimp and grits is pretty low.” Brittany punched her sister on the shoulder. “I’ll talk to Ryan tonight.”

Poor Mrs.
