About Brittney Sahin

Brittney Sahin began writing at an early age, with the dream to be a published author before the age of 18. Although academic pursuits (and, later, a teaching career) interrupted her aspirations, she never stopped writing–never stopped imagining.

It wasn’t until her students encouraged her to follow her dreams that Brittney said goodbye to Upstate New York in order to start a new adventure in the place she was raised: Charlotte, North Carolina. Here, she decided to take her students’ advice and begin to write again.

In 2015, she published her first novel, The Safe Bet. When she is not working on upcoming novels, she spends time with her family. She is a proud mother of two boys, and a lover of suspense novels, coffee, and the outdoors.

EXCERPT

When Mike told Adrienne they were relocating her to a different safe house, her world fell apart.

“Why? What’s wrong with this one?”

“The buzz is out that Nick knows about it. So we’re taking you somewhere else. I’m sorry, Adrienne, but witness protection is going to have to talk to you.” He held up a hand when she opened her mouth to speak. “It could be temporary, but it needs to happen as long as Nick is still out on the streets. Just listen to what they have to say.”

Her leg muscles twitched, refusing to hold her upright much longer. Heat flooded her, her mouth souring like rotting fruit. Her skin itched, as if the rotting fruit drew flies. She swallowed, but the tang lingered.

She couldn’t afford to get too comfortable. Anywhere. Best this way, because she was getting too comfortable here.

“Zan’s going with you,” Mike said. “At least for now.”

At that moment, the man they’d been speaking of, the one she’d been fantasizing about for the last few days, walked in and gave her a shaky smile. The tension in her body released, a dreadful giddiness overtaking her. Her knees almost buckled, but she reached for the wall and held her ground.

Stupid that his presence reassured her.

“I might be joining witness protection with you.” The snarl is his voice indicated he was not pleased.

They gave her an hour to get ready, told her they could get her more things later so not to bother with many clothes. Great news, considering how much she hated the clothes they’d given her—including the flimsy flip-flops she had to traipse around in—but she still ended up an overstuffed piece of luggage by the time she was done. Mostly because of Tonka’s things.

“Leave the cat. He’s better off here.” Mike stood in the doorway, a scowl etched across his face as Adrienne tangled with Tonka, a hefty purse, and her luggage. She searched for the cat carrier. It was around here somewhere, and she couldn’t take Tonka out without it.

As if Mike’s mere presence wasn’t enough, Meagan acted as a buffer between Adrienne and the door, as if they weren’t about to let her go until she abided by their command and handed over the cat.

Adrienne held Tonka tighter, only to get protesting mewls. “No. He’s coming with me.”

“Let’s get you to a safe place first. Then we’ll get the cat to you.”

“There’s no reason for him to stay.”

“You’ll be taking a circuitous route. It won’t be comfortable for you, much less a cat. You could be in danger of losing him then. He’ll be safe here.”

“Why can’t we fly?”

“You will, eventually.”

“Tonka will be fine right here,” Zan said. “Meagan is a cat lover.”

Adrienne eyed Meagan, studying her for any love written across her features. The agents enjoyed doting on Tonka, but nobody would care for her cat as much as she did.

How could she abandon him? Didn’t they realize he was the reason she’d stayed sane all these years?

“Come on, you see how Meagan has been with Tonka. She’s not going to let anything harm that cat.” Zan nudged her. “Mike doesn’t want to admit it, but he’s a cat lover, too. The only harm Tonka will see is choosing which of the two humans will spoil him the most.”

“You’ll have Tonka in a couple days,” Mike promised. “Three tops.”

“We need to get going,” Zan said.

Adrienne dropped her luggage and cuddled Tonka closer, who purred as she whispered words of endearment. She hated to let him go but had to admit he’d be in good company. The entire crew would spoil him rotten.

Meagan opened her arms and took Tonka, digging her hands under his neck and finding his sweet spot. He ignored Adrienne as she walked out the door, and tears gummed her eyelids as her chest constricted with an aching need to burst open and release all her anxieties.

She’d lost too much over the past few days, but she had to reassure herself she’d see him again soon.

“Hold up,” Mike shouted as Zan led Adrienne to their escape car. “I don’t want you taking that car.”

Zan stopped and turned to face Mike. “Why not? What’s the problem?”

“They might be on the lookout for it. Agent Brock is going to take it as a diversion. We have you in the van.” He pointed to an old gray Chevy cargo van.

Zan’s shoulders slumped. “Are you kidding me? A head’s up would have been nice. And if we need to run away from anyone, that’ll be impossible.”

“You’d be surprised. This van has nice mods under the hood.”

Zan nodded. “Hmm okay. I’d love to see it, but we don’t have time.”

“I’ll catch up with you later. Be safe.”

“Will do.”

Heat spooled down Adrienne’s spine when Zan palmed her lower back and steered her to the van. From the corner of her eye, she watched three agents get in the car they were supposed to take. Zan muttered under his breath, something about not feeling safe in a stupid van no matter what was under the hood.

“Look, I know you’re worried about Tonka.” Zan settled in the driver’s seat and pushed the key in the ignition. “Everything is going to be okay.”

“What happened? Why the sudden move? Was someone followed or something?”

Zan turned the ignition and slammed his hands on the steering wheel when it didn’t start. He’d kept the door open, maybe to bolt out and chastise Mike for his decision.

“There’s a buzz out on the street that Nick is looking for us, and might have found us.”

She clutched her stomach, fear spreading to every part of her body. It took three tries to get the van started, and Zan was pounding his fists, opening the door, and cursing by the time it roared to life.

“I can’t believe Mike wants me to take this stupid fucking machine,” he muttered atop a slew of other curses.

As he shut the door, resigned to his fate, a loud explosion blasted the area.

Excerpt
She pulled on shorts and a t-shirt. A racket made her flinch—the wind against the window—but when she shifted the curtain to peer outside, not even the tree branches moved.
Her blood pounded. She was just being paranoid. Her mental fatigue weighed heavy on her and her thought patterns were going way too negative. Tonka hadn’t budged. If Tonka hadn’t heard anything—
The bathroom door crashed open. Tonka bolted.
Adrenaline, thick and heavy, infused her. The man from last night loomed in the doorway. Her knees buckled, but she didn’t allow room for weakness. She dove for the shotgun, stumbled over the dirty clothes pile, and managed to catch herself on the corner of the counter so that she didn’t fall or, worse, hit her head.
He held up his hands as if to ward off blows. Good idea. Find something to throw at him. She reached for her hair straightener. Strong, heavy metal. Maybe it would do some damage. If only it had been plugged in and burning hot.
“Didn’t mean to scare you.”
His voice, a refined edge of rasp, incited horror. Scared was an understatement.
This man had killed someone last night, and now he was here to kill her. Her throat clogged with a silent scream. Black shadows hazed her mind, an orbit of acceptance and denial, accession and refusal, fight and surrender.
She’d fight.
She yanked the straightener from the shelf and aimed it at his face. He shifted to avoid the blow. It thwacked on the wall and slid to the floor. She grabbed a makeup jar to throw at him. Again, he sidestepped her blow. Why had she kept the shotgun too far from reach?
“Please, woman. I’m not going to kill you. Obviously I should have planned this better.”
He’s dead. His voice, so gut-wrenching, ripped out her confidence. Her body trembled. She hurled a lotion bottle at his head. It smacked the wall and fell, spewing its contents all over the floor. Sweat pooled on her forehead, her wet hair channeling water droplets down her shirt.
She clenched the counter behind her as she leaned to reach the gun.
“I’m a cop. Please, I’m not going to hurt you. But I think I was followed, and whoever followed me probably does intend on hurting you. Please don’t attract any more attention.”
The bathroom was too big. Why did it have to be so big? The gun so far away? She hurled a shampoo bottle and was pleased when it hit his chest. Still, he didn’t move. She lunged for the shotgun and managed to aim it at him without dropping it, even if it wasn’t cocked.
He kept his arms up. “Put the weapon away. I’m not going to hurt you, but someone is coming who will.”
Her pulse beat at her temples. Her legs weakened, but she held on, refusing to allow herself to crumble.
“Don’t you hear that?” he asked when the front door slammed and footsteps pounded against the floor, stopping and starting in heavy exploratory drifts. Whoever was in her home was looking for something. Probably her.
But this man was not a cop. And if he was, she definitely couldn’t trust him. Not after what she’d seen last night.
“I’m sure it’s my boyfriend,” she lied. Her voice was a high-pitched whine, and she swallowed. Nervousness was not the way to win this battle.
“You don’t have a boyfriend.”
“Yes. I do. He’s big, and strong. He likes guns. And he has a dog even bigger.”
The man blinked, his sneer not one of amusement. “No, you don’t. Come on, I don’t want to hurt you. Or scare you. But I don’t plan on dying today so as long as you don’t, you need to come with me.”
It sounded like a bulldozer was destroying her home. But she couldn’t go with this killer. She’d seen him. He wasn’t the one who’d been driving, who’d hurled Bill Dane into that tree, but he had been there, in the car following afterward, like a horror movie becoming real.
She remembered that frame, that hair. That walk. Although she hadn’t seen his dark brown eyes, now they were familiar, as if they’d flamed bright out of a blackened night and branded her with only a look.
His jaw clenched. “My God, woman. You’ll kill us both.”

SYNOPSIS

Sex is his weapon.
Power is her drug.

Caesar Accardo is gasoline. Mostly harmless while stable, but Aria holds the match to set the dishonored Cosa Nostra prince on fire in more ways than one. And if he burns down everything in his path because of it—so be it.

The problem is … she just wasn’t prepared for all of him.

Aria De Rose is a hurricane. Amazing from afar, but destructive up close. Caesar keeps getting pulled into the Camorra queen’s plans in her effort to gain power, but he’s a better player than she knows.

The thing is … women like her are the reason why rules are meant to be broken.

Philadelphia isn’t ready for game these two are playing—the sacrifices they make might not be worth it in the end, and someone will always lose in a war.

They’re broken, so very vicious, and they are not the good guys. But for every villain in the world, there’s a monster at his back who made him that way.

And monsters like those hide in plain sight.

Note: This is a standalone romance with content that some might find triggering. Be warned, and read with caution.

EXCERPT

Aria raised a brow, and nothing more, in the face of Simone’s sudden rage. He was not the first man to get angry, or to try something with her. He could raise his fist, and she would probably smile at him and dare him to try it.

She didn’t frighten that easily.

“I want to speak with Jac,” Simone demanded.

Growled, was more like it.

Aria smirked a bit, and shook her head once. “No, that won’t be possible for a while. You know how this goes while he’s in lockup—the less visitation, the better. He doesn’t want names and records kept of our coming and going besides his immediate family. Me, I mean. If you have something to say, Simone, you are looking at the one woman you get to say it to. Otherwise, sit yourself back down in that chair. I’m starting to think my father has severely neglected some things when it comes to you.”

She was acutely aware of the gazes watching her. Of the other men at the table who would report back to whoever they needed to about her behavior, and how she handled this situation. That was fine with her. She needed people to know her name. She needed them afraid of the one and only De Rose woman willing to cut them down.

Power came to those who took it.

It was never given.

Simone scoffed, although he did sit down. “What exactly has he neglected with me, Aria? Nothing more or less than he neglected with your ignorant—”

“Watch your tongue, or I will cut it out.”

He blinked, silenced.

Aria smiled.

Simone’s wife was not quite as smart, though. Giovanna’s gaze narrowed as it turned on Aria with a burning rage that might shrink a lesser woman.

“Who do you think you are?” Giovanna asked. “You’re reaching a bit when you talk to him like that, don’t you think? Be careful, Aria. Your father isn’t going to be in prison for very much longer.”

Didn’t this stupid wife know?

Getting up from her seat with the slow grace she had been taught was most beneficial to a lady who wanted all eyes on her, Aria fingered the rim of the wine glass she’d emptied just before this meeting had begun. The wine bottle was all the way at the other end of the table, so no one seemed to think twice about her grabbing the glass as she moved down the table. All eyes stayed on her, and frankly, they should have known.

When it came to her, they always should have known.

Aria had just come to the back of Giovanna’s chair when she showed them she had no intention of going for the wine bottle. She smashed the wine glass overtop of the woman’s unsuspecting head before she grabbed a fistful of Giovanna’s hair, and yanked her head back so wide eyes were staring up at her. Chairs scraped, and warnings murmured along the table, but no one stepped in.

They did know better, then.

Or, they were learning.

Good.

Bending down to murmur in Giovanna’s ear, Aria’s smile stayed firmly in place when she said, “Check my bloodlines, cagna. You’ll find exactly who I am.”

She was a De Rose.

Camorra.

Vicious, violent, and vehement.

And she would bow to no one.

Not again.
