It takes a lot to rile me up. From the moment I meet the young widow, she gets under my skin. I want to kiss her. But only to shut her up.

My name is Maccabe Donahue, but everyone calls me Mac. Just out of the Navy and current Devil’s Rider, the inner circle of the Sons of Satan motorcycle club, I’m known for keeping a cool head. But all that changes when I take the job of managing the build of a new development outside of town.

A development that is right next door to a tiny cottage, formerly in the middle of nowhere. That’s where Suzanna comes in.

The woman is going to drive me insane.

She’s the best-looking woman I’ve ever seen. Long legs and long, dark hair, with big green eyes and a curvaceous figure that defies gravity. She’s all fire and vinegar wrapped up in a package that makes my hands itch to touch her.

When those sparks combust, it sets off a chain reaction neither of us saw coming.

BLURB:

I was his new beginning. He was my last chance.
I need a husband. Today. Now, if possible. I thought any man would do, but when my first choice is run out of town the day before we’re to be married, I’m forced to consider it when cowboy Gage Pennell proposes. I don’t know him. I’ve never met him before today. Up until a few hours ago, he was working for my nearest and dearest enemy, the same man who wants to steal everything from me.
I’d rather die than let that happen. If my neighbor gets his way, I might. But Gage is more than just good looks and heart-stopping swagger… and I’m desperate.
But, am I this desperate?
I guess we’ll find out, because when my neighbor puts his most ruthless plan yet into action, I’m forced to fight back the only way I can. And in the Wild, Wild West, sometimes it’s the bride who takes the cowboy.

EXCERPT:

Knowing she’d failed everybody, Millie got up off the floor and walked outside.
The cool night air struck her face, easing the hotness that always flushed her when she got this mad. The sun had gone down, but it wasn’t quite dark yet. The sky was gray, a tinge of orange staining the clouds along the western horizon. She couldn’t see the riders, they were gone. She could barely make out the individual stalks of corn in the field they’d never get to harvest, or the gnarled old desert willow in the pasture where her parents were buried, or the crossbeams and spikes of the cavalry blockades she’d always hated because they were a constant visual reminder that her grandpa wasn’t well. He never would be well again and, in all likelihood, he’d only get worse as time went by. There was nothing she could do about that, just like there was nothing she could do about this.
“Might I have a word with you, Miss Hackett?” Gage asked from the doorway. He said it cheerfully, although he wasn’t smiling when she looked back at him.
“Millie,” she corrected, by way of consent. “Any man willing to cower with me in my kitchen when my neighbor comes to kill everybody has earned the right to call me by my Christian name.”
Now he did smile, but it was only a flash of a thing—there and gone again even before he stepped out into the coolness to stand with her on a porch that wouldn’t be hers for very much longer.
Propping a shoulder against a roof post, he said, “Nice night.”
Yeah, it was.
“Nice breeze. House is positioned just right to catch it.”
“Grandpa built it a long time ago. Daddy helped him expand it, once when he was a boy and again when he was my age and fixing to bring my mama home as his bride.” She turned her face into the breeze, letting it dry the tears she refused to cry.
After a moment of polite silence, Gage said, “Mighty peaceful. A man could get used to spending his life on a porch like this, watching the sun go down after a hard day’s work.”
Which was about how far he had to go before it tickled at Millie that none of this was what he was really trying to say. She looked at him to find he wasn’t studying the sky or the field or the crops or any of the things his comments had suggested he’d been admiring. He was staring straight at her.
“Take your measure of me,” he invited. “My name’s Gage Pennell. I’ve worked hard all my life, wrangling cattle mostly and trail riding, but my daddy was a farmer. I’ve worked fields, built fences, and took care of livestock most my childhood. I’m a good man. Upon occasion, I’ll have me a drink or enjoy a game of chance, but neither rules my life. Whenever I’m in town and not on the trail, I make an effort to put my butt in the pews on Sunday morning. A time or two, I can even be counted upon to stay awake through to the end of service. I’m honest. When I give my word, I keep it. I don’t take to liars, and it’s not my preference to tell them.”
She stared at him, knowing this ought to make more sense than what her brain was making of it, but the longer she listened, the more confused and, oddly, anxious she became. “What are you saying?”
“Hurley Ames,” he specified, nodding vaguely in the direction of her neighbor’s house. “He might think he’s in the right, but the longer I sat listening to that braggart messenger he sent us, the more I began thinking how dead wrong he was about one very important thing.”
“What?” For the life of her, she couldn’t think of anything Hurley—or his messenger—was wrong about. Apart from his tactics.
“Me,” Gage said bluntly. “I find myself standing here before you, Millie, being a man of two parts. First: Despite that braggart’s claims to the contrary, I am not afraid to hitch myself to anyone. Especially not to a woman as stubborn, strong, hard-working, and determined as I can barely comprehend that you must be in order to have dealt with all this on your own up until now. And second: The more I learn about all this, the more I find I don’t got the stomach for ignoring bullies. So,” he said, and it was all Millie could do to focus on the words he was saying and not the glaringly obvious ones he wasn’t. “Having taken my measure of you and given you everything you need to take yours of me, let me ask you a question…”

SYNOPSIS

He would have his revenge. Nothing and no one could stop him.
Ferris has spent the better part of six years training and preparing for vengeance. The barbarians who abducted his sister so long ago would pay for their sins in blood. With the help of his magic, he’d avenge her honor, and wipe out the Black Isles once and for all. It’s all so clear, until he starts to wonder if he’s fighting for the wrong side.

She knows she must kill him. So why does she hesitate?
As right hand woman to the General, Eryn plays an important role in the defense of the Black Isles and its people. When a ship full of human mainlanders is spotted in their territory, she knows they must strike the enemy hard. War will tear the Isles apart if the warlock on-board the ship isn’t stopped. Only, she can’t bring herself to do the needful… He has put her under his spell.

They’re sworn enemies, fighting for opposing teams. The battlefield is the last place where love should bloom. But as they are about to discover, passion and hate are two sides of the same coin…

EXCLUSIVE RELEASE EXCERPT

It was unmistakably him. Eryn was instantly mesmerized by the man’s eyes.

This was the one who had attempted to read her mind as she had flown past the ship earlier, staring up at her from his cabin, assuming she wouldn’t notice.

Only, she had noticed.

Now here he stood, his sword held high, circling her in a bid to evade the aim of her bow and arrow. He wouldn’t be able to, of course. She was faster than any human. More accurate.

And she had orders to kill. All it took was one swift flick of her finger. The arrow would hit any body part of her choosing instantly.

Time seemed to stand still for her, as soldiers rushed past and clashed with the other humans. The latter were no match, of course. Every single one of her fighters had at least a foot or two on the feeble humans. But her opponent was different.

The warlock was unique.

He stood taller than his companions, with broad, muscular shoulders to match. They were about equally matched as far as height went. And he looked younger than the others, probably closer to her own age.

His blue eyes hid all sorts of sins.

But these superficial observations hadn’t shaken Eryn. As physically impressive as he was for one of his breed, Eryn had been affected by a much deeper power.

It must be his magic, she thought. And yet she felt no sign of his presence in her own mind.

Strange.

All she could do was observe him, as though she was not truly in control of her body.

Then, the spell was broken by his first move. He charged ahead and swung at her with his sword, and instantly she snapped out of her trance.

She defended herself with her bow, whipping it around to break the impact of his weapon, then swiftly flung it over her shoulder and unsheathed a blade of her own.

They danced around each other, eyes locked on, taking turns to attack and defend. But his impact lacked strength. Were humans really that much weaker? Or was he as reluctant as she was to do real damage?

Where had her hesitation come from? She didn’t have time for this!

Eryn bit her bottom lip as she swung around again. In this carefully orchestrated charade of a fight, it was her turn to strike. She’d had enough of the pretense and more importantly, she had orders to follow.

She raised her sword and aimed. He stepped aside to evade her attack, just as she suspected he’d do. In response, she changed direction mid-swing, found an opening, and brought the tip of her blade to a halt right at his throat.

It would be so easy to push a little harder and draw blood. So easy, and yet impossibly difficult. With a heavy heart she realized she couldn’t finish it. She couldn’t bring herself to kill him.

“You’d better drop that sword,” she hissed.

The man did as he was told, but his expression was as calm as it had been all along. Like this wasn’t a real fight, and he hadn’t really been defeated.

“I surrender.” As he spoke, the corner of his mouth curled up just slightly.

Was he smiling?

Eryn could not be sure. All she knew was that the longer she looked at his boyishly handsome face, the deeper she would sink. He’d given up so quickly, she couldn’t even justify carrying out Rhea’s demand here. Not in full view of her soldiers, who had been given clear orders to keep the prisoners alive.

So in a way, it was she who had lost this fight after all.

Rhea would be furious and rightly so. She was angry with herself.

A quick glance around revealed that most of the other humans had surrendered as well. If this was the sum total of the threat against the Isles, then they had nothing to worry about. As she looked back at her own prisoner, something shook Eryn to her core. His expression was so relaxed, it almost looked smug. There was something more coming.

She might regret capturing him alive before the day was over.

“Tie them up and stash them below deck, then we’ll tow the entire ship back to Black Mountain,” Eryn ordered. “Good fight, everyone!”

Her soldiers let out a loud cheer before getting to work and doing what she’d ordered. Eryn stood back and let someone else secure the ropes around the warlock’s wrists.

There was something about him that she could not understand. She wasn’t just apprehensive of his powers; it wasn’t fear she felt.

Yet she dare not touch him. Or look him in the eye for too long.

Her heart was beating just a little too fast. Her breaths had become too shallow. If she didn’t know any better, she thought it might be nerves. A funny tickle in the depths of her stomach made it hard for her to remain focused.

If she was in fact nervous, there was another, heavier feeling making things worse. A deep sadness had crept into her chest. It tore at her, and dragged her down.

It was only once he was completely out of sight that she could breathe a little more freely.

Venomous Heart teaser 1

EXCERPT:

She closed her eyes.

The scents became clearer as she kept her eyes closed. The water, pure and cold; the grass under her naked soles; and the flowers. The flowers, with their stubborn, extravagant love for life. How many times had she wished she was like one of those flowers? Blooming, happy, beautiful. Hundreds of times, thousands, she’d wished it. Every time Knut made her cry, every time Knut made her feel like she wasn’t truly a person.

“You shouldn’t come out here alone, especially at night.”

A male voice startled her and Ava turned quickly, holding the scalpel she had brought with her in front of her body defensively. A tall, broad figure stepped out of the deep shadows created by a series of bushes, a figure she recognized instantly.

“I could tell you the same thing.” Ava lowered her arm but didn’t withdraw it completely.

“If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were following me.”

“I am following you.” There it was again, that humorless voice, all business and military.

It made her body tingle in all the wrong places, even though alarms bells rang in her head.

Ava watched warily as Arlen approached, completely undeterred by her weapon.

“How very stalkerish of you.”

He didn’t answer, just prowled closer to her with an uncanny, almost feline grace. The silver moonlight reflected off his head, making the markings on his skin even more apparent. A tiny thrill skittered across her skin at the sight of him and she pulled the sides of her cotton sweater more tightly around her body.

He was close enough now that she could see his features clearly, the harsh shadows from the cloudless moon playing on the angles of his face, giving him the appearance of an ancient,

long-forgotten deity. His pale eyes reflected the light, seeming almost entirely white as he stared down at her.

There was nothing soft about him. Not even the plump hardness of his lips as his mouth stretched into a humorless grin.

“Are you always this insolent?”

Arlen hovered above her, barely two feet away, and he was so tall she had to tilt her head back to meet his gaze. His arms were bare in his sleeveless vest, rippling with muscles and covered with markings. He was a monument to strength and control, to this cold military authority she sensed in everything he did.

The tingling in her belly grew as she stared at those strong arms, that skin covered with markings that seemed as rough as it was soft. What would it feel to run her fingers along it? Her tongue?

Get a grip! What is going on with you?

“Maybe it’s just your Eok charm.” Ava forced herself to relax her posture but her arms refused to let go, and she still hugged herself. “Are you always this creepy?”

He shook his head at her sassy answer then his eyes went down to her scalpel. The corner of his mouth curved up slightly, and there was something in his gaze that wasn’t there before as he looked back up at her. It looked an awful lot like amusement.

“Do you plan on stabbing me? If so, I hope your arms are stronger than they look. It’ll take you all night to kill me with that.”

“Of course not.” Ava brought her arm down, suddenly feeling very foolish. What was she expecting, anyway? It wasn’t like she could fight off an Eok warrior with her scalpel. “I brought it with me for protection, that’s all.” She turned to the river, but she could feel Arlen’s gaze on her. “Nobody comes here, anyway.”

“Nobody but you.” He planted himself at her side and they stayed like that in silence for a while. When he finally spoke again, his voice wasn’t all business and efficiency, but a bit dreamy. “Did you come here often? Before?”

Ava’s arms tightened around her body and a sudden surge of emotions welled up in her throat. Aside from Uril, nobody asked her questions. Nobody cared what she felt. Why did he?

Or maybe she was just a fool to think he did.
