EXCERPT
FOREWORD
I recently read a statistic claiming that out of a million writers, only 3% would actually finish a novel. Considering the millions of books out there, I questioned the truth of this claim. So, I did a bit of research. Without belaboring the point, yes, it seems that many writers who would like to actually write a book never accomplish their dream. The top three reasons are work, life and difficulty. I’ve encountered them all.
But there is something else. Aloneness. A novel is born from a writer’s imagination. And only a writer can pour onto pages what exists solely in his or her mind. This can be a wonderful or terrifying experience. But it is a solitary prison of sorts … until the idea is released to others for their feedback. And this is one reason why many would-be authors fail. They are too alone and without critical support. For me, this is a sobering thought.
I realize I have much to be grateful for. And I want to thank all those who have helped me along the way. Frankly, there are many, but I know who you are.
But for now, I especially want to thank my beloved friend and editor, John E. Wildermuth. John, nothing has changed. I could not accomplish this series without you. You are my rock and my compass. And I want you to know that I know it.
To Catherine Lyon of Lyon Marketing Literary Services, my dear friend and publicist. Thank you for your encouragement and support. This book may have happened eventually, but it is only happening now because of you. I thought I had a clear path forward to finishing my seven-book series, but then, you were there saying, “Publish Book Two now. Don’t wait.” I am glad I listened.
To my wonderful reading consultant, Dawn Johnson, for keeping me straight on hospital protocol. Your advice was invaluable. I did listen, although I continued to take literary license. Any mistakes are mine. But you know that.
And last, but never least, I want thank my amazing family for all your support, professionally and otherwise. I am humbled that you believe in me so deeply and are my greatest fans. Words cannot express my gratitude.
