Perequin reached for the scalpel. With trembling hands she brought it to her side. The blade skittered across her stitches. Maybe she could wipe it off. Nothing else was in reach of her.
Boom!
That sound filled her with dread. She screamed and drove the blade into her side, nicking it on the key. A wave of dizziness washed over her, the corrosive poison gnawed at her side. Blood poured over her hand, her grasp becoming slick.
Her fingers slipped on the blood-soaked key but she drew it out carefully. Her fingers, now numb from the poison, fumbled and the key slipped from her grasp. Desperately she felt around with her toe, trying to grip the key and bring it back to her lock. She caught the key on her big toe and started to lift it to her hand. The toe and hand met. She clutched at the key, but it slipped through her fingers, falling to the floor again.
She clenched her teeth. The wound bled freely, dripping down her thigh. She struggled and reached for the key again.
Boom!
The room shuddered once more. A door appeared before her eyes. Screaming for her goddess’s forgiveness, she struggled, and, with a click, the iron maiden slammed closed.
“Game over,” the voice echoed in the stillness of the room.

When English professor Lam Corso receives a death threat at work, he laughs it off. A liberal activist teaching at a small Southern conservative college, he’s used to stirring up controversy on campus. It’s just part of the give and take of life. Even when violently attacked, Lam is convinced it has to be a mistake. He can’t imagine anyone who would want to kill him for his beliefs.
When his home is broken into and his wife’s business vandalized, Lam is forced to face facts. The police can’t find a single lead. Lam’s wife—a passionate anti-gun crusader—is outraged when Lam brings a gun into the house for protection. Left to their own devices, Lam and Susan must examine their marriage, faith, and values in the face of a carefully targeted attack from an assailant spurred into action by a different set of beliefs.
What will it cost to survive?
Excerpt
In the silence immediately after Susan screamed, Simon’s high wail came from upstairs. Billy’s voice broke through, “Mom? What happened, Mom?” His voiced moved to the top of the stairs. “Mama, I’m scared. Where are you?” Simon was sobbing.
Susan grabbed the flashlight and scrambled to her feet. The darkness of the room pressed in on her, weighted with threat, the silence in the downstairs smothering her voice. She shined the flashlight toward the stairway, heading that way, and yelled, “Boys, can you see the light from the flashlight?”
She flicked the light around the room, and seeing nobody, she yelled again, with less panic this time, “Nothing to be afraid of, Billy. I’m sorry I scared you. You and Simon come on downstairs right now.” She shined the light on the stairway steps, fear crawling up her spine from the darkness behind her.

“I highly recommend this fast-paced novel to readers who like historical backgrounds and rich descriptions of exotic regions. The romance adds spice and the ending satisfies.”
Ms. Baron did her homework and travel to make this book so interesting. I could “see” the sites of Greece, and through fact and fiction two stories came to life.

Check out interesting snippets from a recent article published on Tripfiction as Marilyn Baron shares her love of Italy and Greece.
I love to travel and set most of my books in places I’ve visited. I’ve set three romantic thrillers in foreign locales…and my latest book, released in January 2018, The Siege: A Novel, set in Florence, Italy, and Chania, on the Greek island of Crete. Setting is always like a character in my books.
———————–
The Siege, a contemporary woman’s fiction,… transports the reader back in time to World War II Crete, so it has historical elements and it is also a thriller (when the book opens, the hero and heroine are trapped in his honeymoon suite during a terrorist attack on their hotel in Florence, Italy).
———————–
When I decided to write The Siege, I interviewed the man whose family was from Rhodes, and who generously shared their story about emigrating from the island, memories of his visit to Rhodes and life in the Sephardic Jewish community.
