I just thought I would do a quick post. Saturday, I lost my Grandmother. She was the heart and soul of this family. We will have her funeral tomorrow @10 am. I can’ t seem to stop crying. When I think I am done, a memory, song, smell, picture or phrase will remind me that she is with the Angels. As I write this I am crying. I will forever love you Grandma, and you will never be forgotten.
Today Grandma had a busy day. My Aunt made arrangements to have the lady who usually cuts my grandma’s hair to come to her room at the west campus in Midland. My Grandmother was so excited to get her hair cut. She is doing better and better every day, Now that she is out of that place she was at. II don’t know when, it could be tomorrow. She is being transferred to Stanton at a Rehabilitation facility there. She has been having more spasticity in her arm and leg. They have her on muscle relaxers so it won’t be so painful for her.
With all the setbacks that she has had, infections, dehydration, pneumonia, and abuse, she has not had a lot of therapy on left her arm, and leg. Since she has been at the west campus, she has done a lot better. She has had the feeding tube removed from her stomach, and is eating solid food. It is either cut real small or is soft enough so that she can chew or swallow it easily without getting choked. Her left arm has moved on it’ own twice. This is good news. It means that the brain is trying to wakeup or make new pathways. This means that one day that she could suddenly just move her arm. That is why she needs the therapy to keep the muscles from becoming stiff and atrophy, so when it does happen she can move her arm.
If you set limits on yourself, you will never go beyond those limits and get better. If you tell yourself hat you will walk and move your arm one day. YOU WILL DO IT. You will have set backs along the way, that is only expected. The brain an heal itself if given the right tools to do it with, Nutrition, vitamins and minerals, exercise. There is still a lot we don’t know about the brain, or how it can heal itself. All I know right now is that I am happy that I still have my Grandmother still with us. So anyone in the family who reads this would like to visit her when she does get moved to the Stanton facility, It is called Stanton Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Hello everyone and MERRY CHRISTMAS! I just thought I would let everyone know that GRANDMA was moved to South Care on Mockingbird Lane. They did this so she did not have to go home, and she could get more physical therapy. They call it swing bed. It is we’re they move the patients from facility to facility so Medicare will pay for the THERAPY. When her time is up at South Care they will move her again if she till needs THERAPY.
Has everyone finished there CHRISTMAS shopping. Mom and me have not even started. OUR HEARTS HAVE NOT BEEN INTO IT THIS YEAR. Without Grandma home it does not feel like Christmas. So we are planning to just have a family get together, and Mom Is going to spend tome with Grandma and Pop. We will do something with the kids, I plan on giving them a gift card.I will get them something else later.
Nothing else is going on, this is just a quick post. Everyone have a Happy Holiday and stay safe.
Hello everyone!. I thought I would give you just a quick update. Grandma has over 50% swallowing, so they are letting her have some jello I think or it might be applesauce. The first day I heard about this she had 50% and they said they would let her try some jello to see how she would do. Then the next day was a little more and I heard something about applesauce. I am not quite sure. Also, today my uncle called my grandmothers name, and I guess she was asleep, and it sounded like my uncle was in distress so she whipped her head around real fast. Almost all the way to the left, everyone saw this, even the nurses, they went whoa, they were a little startled that she could do that. That is some improvement.
Also when Health South releases Grandma we are having her put into Manor Park to continue her therapy. This will also give us time to get the house ready for her, for when she is ready to come home. We want her to have as much physical therapy that she can get, that way she will be able to do more for herself when she does come home. She is a strong, proud woman, and this will get her back on her feet, and not have to depend on us as much. She was already having to depend on us because of her not being able to see very well. I was helping to balance her checkbook, and pay her bills, mom, and my uncle was taking her to doctor appointments and to the store. Now this it will be too much if she can’t do for herself when she gets home. So we are making sure she has all the physical therapy that she needs before she gets home.
If she needs some additional once she is home we will make sure she has that also. We are just happy and blessed that she is still with us. She is our Christmas Miracle. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Everyone
Just an update on how my Grandmother is doing. She is still in Health South Rehabilitation Center. They are so under staffed it is unreal. Grandma’s rehab has taken a set back because the first time was she became dehydrated. She is still unable to swallow, and they did not give her enough fluids while she was doing her Rehab. So she ended up collapsing , while they were trying to get her to stand up. Now she has an infection, that has set her back again. The Doctor was telling us that they might have to discharge her around Dec. 22 because she was not showing enough of an improvement.
We stated that how can she improve when they neglect to make sure she is adequately hydrated, and then the staff does not make sure the conditions are clean enough that she ends up getting an infection caused by feces in the wound of her feeding tube. Now they are doing one on one sessions with her with the therapists. The therapist that she really likes put muscle stimulator machine on her left leg , and her leg kicked up. He was really happy. He said that was the best he has seen in there at that facility. He asked my Grandmother if she could kick her leg up, and she told him to come closer and she would kick him. He replied that he would let her kick him if it would get her to walking. The therapist also told us he would talk with the Doctors in regards to her progress, so I have a feeling if he says she has to stay then they will probably have to keep her in there.
She is also talking a lot clearer to were you can understand her and hear her now. It is still going to be a long road to recovery. We just have to have patience and not wear ourselves out trying to care for her and my Grandfather.
