EXCERPT: Callum

“Mr. Byrne, I can assure you that you won’t find a better location for your new restaurant in all of Brighton.” The estate agent flashes his extra-white teeth. He looks almost like a shark, readying himself to shred his prey to pieces – me in this case.

“The rent is too high, it won’t be viable,” I argue, while looking around the empty establishment again. A lot of decorating would be needed as well. It’s too much.

“Think of the footfall!” He points out the window which is currently partially obscured by white paint. Still, masses of day-trippers can be seen from where we stand.

“How about you speak to the owners again and let me know if the lease is negotiable? It will take a lot of investment to bring this property up to scratch.” I offer him my hand, signalling the end of the viewing, as well as the discussion. If he comes down enough, I may consider this property, otherwise, it’s back to the drawing board.

“Very well. Thank you very much for your time.” The estate agent shakes my hand slightly less enthusiastically than at the beginning of the meeting.

After leaving the empty shop, we say our goodbyes and go our separate ways.

It’s a beautiful day, deep blue skies with not a cloud in sight. Warm too, the surging temperatures of our current summer heatwave evident in the amount of exposed skin outside. Apparently I’m overdressed. Swimming trunks and bikinis, that’s Brighton’s dress code in the summer. I stand out like a sore thumb in my jeans and button-up shirt.

The footfall would be good here, though I’d expect my new restaurant to quickly become bookings-only once the new show airs. Perhaps I should consider a location that’s a little further away from the madding crowds, and hopefully more affordable. I don’t want to have to shutter up the place as soon as I’m no longer on TV.

Enough work for one day though. Today is too lovely to waste.

The beach is crowded, so much so I’m not at all tempted to go near it. Perhaps if I walk further out towards the western side of town I’ll find some peace and quiet. But not without sampling some of the local refreshments. The only establishment not selling fish and chips around here seems to be the ice cream truck parked up on the pavement. There’s a queue of people already waiting, but I can’t help myself. Gelato will do that to a person.

I join one of the two queues and wait my turn. It takes a while, but it’ll be worth it.

“One scoop of rum and raisin, please,” I say, shocked to find that the girl to my left has word-for-word ordered the exact same thing. The two guys behind the counter look at each other and pause.

“OK, you’re going to have to sort this out between yourselves,” my guy says. He seems to be in charge of the truck. “We’ve got one scoop left.”

Looking over at the girl I’m competing with, I’m struck by her exotic beauty. Big brown eyes gaze up at me, a mixture of disappointment and hope. Her full lips half-parted as if she’s about to say something, but something interrupted her. I find myself uncharacteristically reluctant to speak up first, but it looks like I have no choice.

“Let’s flip a coin for it,” I attempt a joke.

Her stare tells me I failed. My eyes are quickly drawn to her hand, clutching a purple leather wallet. No ring, no tan line where one might have been. She looks young, but not inappropriately so.

“I can just get something else,” she whispers at last. Her eyes are still glued to me. Did she recognise me and that’s why she’s staring? Or is it something else? Have I got something stuck in my teeth?

“I hope you won’t take this the wrong way.” I pause, while she raises an eyebrow. My guy, who decided to serve the customer behind me instead of waiting for us to resolve our gelato stand-off, pauses a bit too long, clearly listening in to our conversation.

The black-haired girl patiently waits for me to finish, but something in her body language has changed. I’m sure she gets this all the time. Fuck it, I feel like a sleaze for even trying.

“You have it.” I turn to face the chalkboard again, ready to pick another flavour. “I’ll have tiramisu,” I tell the guy behind the counter, who just shrugs. I guess he was looking forward to watching me get shot down by this girl, had I actually made a move.

Meanwhile, the younger guy hands the girl her scoop of rum and raisin in a cone, which she accepts with a smile. God, what a radiant smile. She takes her change and turns, walking off towards the beach. I quickly take my cup and impossibly tiny spoon and rush after her.

“Excuse me, miss,” I say, when I catch up with her a few steps ahead.

She turns and stares at me again. How the hell do I do this without coming across like a total douche bag? Funnily enough, coming across like a douche has never been much of a concern. You win some you lose some, and ever since the first season of my show aired, I haven’t really had to work hard to get female attention. But there’s something different about this one. I wonder if much of my interest in her is caused by how hard she’s making things?

“Yes?” she asks, sounding stand-offish. Her rich amber-coloured eyes are too distracting, I almost forget what I was about to say.

“I was wondering if I could take you out to dinner?” I ask at last.

She scrutinises me from head to toe, as she considers the question. Perhaps she’s wondering if it’s worth the sacrifice to stick the ice cream in my face.

“Do I know you from somewhere?” she says finally.

Normally, I may have been more than happy to explain, but not this time. Oh yeah, I’m on TV, seems way too tacky. So I shrug. “Maybe I just have one of those faces?”

My answer makes her pause as she cocks her head and looks me right in the eye. Shit, she can tell I’m bullshitting her.

“Where would we go?” She has a lick of ice cream, rescuing some droplets that were about to dribble off the side of the cone.

I hadn’t thought ahead so far. What is it about this girl that she throws me off so much?

“That entirely depends on what type of food you like.”

A hint of a smile plays on her lips.

“I’m here with a friend, is she invited too?”

Bollocks .

Finally a full grin does appear on her face. “No need to look so shocked, I’m only joking.”

I smile back at her, relieved to have not made a complete arse of myself. Yet.

“But I’d better let her know anyway.” The girl turns to scan the beach stretching out ahead of us, before facing me again. “So. What time and where?”

“Nine? Here? Unless you have a better idea.”

“Bear in mind I’m only here for the day, so I don’t have a change of clothes with me. What you see is what you get, I’m afraid.” She glances down at herself, smoothing down the multi-coloured cotton summer dress that covers what appears to be a bikini.

“No matter, same here.” I suddenly realise I don’t even know her name. “I’m Callum, by the way.” In the absence of a better idea of what to do, I stretch out my hand towards her.

She accepts the handshake, though the slight curl of the corners of her mouth suggests I did indeed just make an arse of myself at last. “Mandi. Lovely to meet you.” Yep, her tone confirms it. Ouch.

I try to think of something else to say to break the tension, or at least to distract me from the instant reaction I feel upon touching her hand. What is it about her? You’d think I’d never interacted with a beautiful girl before. Why does she make me feel more like an awkward teenager than a successful and established thirty-year-old man?

“Perhaps we should exchange phone numbers, so we don’t miss each other in the crowds here,” I mumble, while quickly pulling my hand back and fishing my mobile out of my pocket.

“Sure,” she says, before giving me her number. When we say our goodbyes immediately after, I can’t help wondering if I’ll ever see her again, or she’ll decide she’d much rather vanish with her supposed friend. Only time will tell.

ABOUT HEDONIST SIX

hedonist-six

Call me “H.” or Hedonist if you prefer. I’m a Romance writer based in London and I’ve always been a dreamer, though it didn’t occur to me to write down the stories I kept dreaming up until 2012. You’ll not find flowery language and poetry in my work. What you will find though is believable characters, none of whom perfect, going through life and trying to find happiness. Just like the rest of us.

I first started writing because I craved to see more of “my kind of books” on the shelves. In any scenario, you’ll find me rooting for the underdog. The (emotionally) scarred hero who hasn’t really had much (or any) luck in love. The shy office worker who wants to pursue the man of her dreams, but hasn’t quite mustered the courage yet. All my characters are beautifully flawed and messed up, in a way that makes them perfect for one another.

EXCERPT

Michael buttoned up his woolen overcoat as he stepped outside. It was a starless night; the dense cloud cover had made sure of that. There was a certain electricity in the air, which to him suggested it might be about to start snowing.

Michael took a deep breath and closed his eyes. Yes, something was definitely coming. Could that be what had made him feel off for most of the night?

The frosty air surrounding the bar he’d just left seemed heavy with a great many aromas. Things that humans might never notice; for example, the scent of what remained of the fallen autumn leaves from that one tree down the street.

Michael turned to face the opposite direction. Chinatown was at least a mile away, but he could smell the restaurants from here.

He was tempted to stretch his legs a little and sprint home as fast as only a vampire could, but the roads were still too busy. He couldn’t risk someone watching him as he seemingly disappeared into thin air. The Council didn’t take kindly to vampires exposing themselves to humans at the best of times. Ever since the big showdown between Michael’s friend and mentor Alexander and Council leader Julius, they’d been under extra scrutiny. Julius would jump at the chance to punish Michael for supporting Alexander.

Things had really changed a lot in a short period of time, and not entirely for the better.

Michael opened his eyes again, resigned to the fact that he would either have to hail a cab or walk home at an excruciatingly slow, much more human-like pace.

He started to walk roughly in the direction of Hyde Park. If he found a quiet spot, he might still indulge himself in a little fun. As he crossed the busy street ahead, his nose caught a whiff of something unexpected, something metallic.

Blood.

His instincts took over. He turned on his heel and sped up a little as he followed the smell. A low whimper urged him to speed up even further, but he couldn’t risk going any faster if he didn’t want to make a spectacle of himself.

There was a dark passageway in between two large office buildings. He made his way through and found himself in a quiet courtyard, which housed a number of large garbage bins. A woman’s foot peeked out from in between them. No human would have been able to see it in the dark, but Michael could.

Her breaths were labored and becoming shallower, and her heartbeat was slowing. Michael pushed one of the bins aside and kneeled beside the woman, who lay face-down on the ground.

It was obvious to him now; she was barely clinging on to life. He carefully turned her onto her back. Her lips had a purple tinge and her skin looked dry and unusually pale for a human.

The two dark marks on her neck spoke volumes.

She’d been drained.

For but a split second, her eyelids fluttered open. She seemed to see him and opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came. Then she slipped back into unconsciousness.

Michael tensed up. He ought to leave, pretend he never found her. The last thing he needed was for someone to find him here, standing over a dying woman who had clearly been attacked by one of his own. But he couldn’t bring himself to leave.

How pretty she was, how fragile, as she clung to her last shred of humanity.

Why had she ended up like this? Killing was against the rules. And discarding a drained body out in public where it could so easily be discovered? That was sacrilege.

His mind raced. Too many questions, not enough answers.

Michael gazed down at her face; the slightly parted lips, despite their unnatural color, still looked full and luxurious. As did the rest of her, actually. She made a beautiful corpse. Such a waste. This woman would have been a sight to behold before someone had decided to take her life for themselves.

He ran the back of his index finger along the side of her face. She twitched slightly, seemingly in reaction to his touch, causing him to pull away again.

No, he would not leave her, discarded among these bins of office refuse. This wasn’t the end she deserved.

Michael closed his eyes and tried to focus. Her heartbeat had become irregular, as though her body was giving up the fight. If he didn’t hurry, there wouldn’t be any life left to save.

Before he fully realized what he was doing, Michael nicked a vein in his wrist and pressed the newly created wound against her lips.

“Drink,” he whispered.

She was too far out of it, so he couldn’t compel her to listen, but that wouldn’t stop him.

Then, he picked up one of her arms and brought it to his own lips. He waited for what felt like forever. Was she too far gone already?

“Drink or you’ll die!” he urged again, fully aware she likely couldn’t even hear him.

Still, as more and more of his blood trickled out of the gash in his wrist, there was a subtle change in her. Her heartbeat seemed to strengthen. Her breaths became more controlled.

And then, out of nowhere, her free hand jerked up to grab his wrist and press it tightly against her mouth. Finally, she drank in deep gulps as her body tried to recover what it had lost.

That was his cue.

He bit into the wrist he’d been holding already and allowed himself the smallest of tastes. That completed the cycle. The Ritual was done.

She became still again and let go of his arm, her hand flopping down onto her stomach. Her eyes had remained shut throughout; she probably hadn’t even realized what had just happened.

He’d barely realized it too; he’d been acting purely on instinct. Now, as he stood up and inspected the smeared blood on his wrist, it hit him. He’d performed the Ritual. He’d created another vampire—tried to, anyway.

That was something he’d vowed he’d never take as lightly as his own maker had.

She wasn’t out of the woods yet; in fact, he wouldn’t know if she’d even survive the change until the following night, but for some strange reason, he’d jumped in and impulsively made the biggest decision of his immortal life so far.

Things would never be the same again.

EXCERPT: Grace & Victor

Grace’s POV

It was the early eighties, Maryann and I were barely legal but that didn’t stop us from painting the town red. I had a part-time job at Rosalie’s bakery, making just enough money to spend my paycheck—that’s a lie. I never received a paycheck, those days we were paid in cash, sixty dollars stuffed in a white envelope that Rosalie scribbled my name on. It was enough cash for me to buy a brand new outfit every Friday. I would take my envelope, cross three avenues and make my way to Something Else boutique on 86th Street.

I teased my hair six inches to the sky, applied enough blue eyeshadow to my eyelids, you had no choice but to notice my almond shaped eyes. Lastly, I ripped the tags and put on my silk turquoise jumpsuit. Maryann stole her father’s car out of the garage and picked me up at exactly ten o’clock. Studio 54 was packed, the line to get inside the club wrapped around the block but Maryann grabbed my hand and walked us straight to the front of the line.

“I’m a friend of Val’s,” she told the bouncer guarding the door.

At the time, I only knew Val as one of the neighborhood guys. He, like most of the guys our age living in Bensonhurst, hung around with the old-timers, the made-men, goodfellas—you know the type of men I’m talking about. Gangsters.

I didn’t know if Val was in fact a made man or part of a family, I just knew one day he would be and I understood why Maryann had taken a liking toward him. Who didn’t find that type of man sexy? There was nothing more attractive than the unattainable bad boy who exuded charisma.

The bouncer lifted the red velvet rope and escorted us into the pulsating night club. I remember the song playing as I stepped foot onto the colorful dance floor that lit up as the patrons danced the night away, ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ by the Bee Gees. It was one of my favorites and I wanted to dance so badly but Maryann had other plans, taking my hand as she dragged me across the dance floor to the bar where Val stood. He was surrounded by a bunch of guys, some I knew and others were a mystery. A delicious mystery.

“Order us a couple of Long Island Iced Teas and I’ll be right back,” she shouted over the music.

I sat down at the bar and ordered the drinks, glancing across the bar as she worked her way into the circle and straight to Val. The bartender placed the two drinks in front of me and I waited five minutes before I pulled the little paper umbrella from the glass and lifted the straw to my lips.

I averted my eyes back to the other end of the bar and noticed Maryann and Val had disappeared from the crowd.

“Those things are lethal,” a voice said from behind me, forcing me to spin around on the bar stool and stare at the most handsome man I ever laid eyes on.

The first thing I noticed was his clothes. He wasn’t dressed like the other men. His charcoal gray suit looked as if it was tailor made for him. He opted to wear a black turtleneck under the suit, no button down, collar popping shirt for the handsome stranger before me. He did however engage in the fad of gold chains. My eyes zeroed in on the crucifix dangling from the thick, gold rope chain hanging around his neck. I lifted my eyes to his face and was greeted by a smile I’d never forget.

His eyes drifted toward the two drinks that sat in front of me to the empty stool beside me.

“May I?”

“Sure,” I said, twirling back around to face the bar as he slipped onto the stool and signaled for the bartender.

He ordered a Martini, dry with extra olives as I toyed with the paper umbrella and brought my drink to my lips for another sip. The song changed, Tavares filtered the nightclub with their hit, ‘More Than a Woman’.

“What’s your name, beautiful?” He asked, casually draping an arm over the back of my stool.

“Grace,” I said, mesmerized by the way he stared so intently at me.

“Grace,” he repeated, testing the name on his tongue, grinning once he decided he liked the way it sounded.

“And who are you?” I stammered, taking another sip, hoping to calm my nerves. This man had the power to undo me with a simple glance.

“Me? I’m the man who’s going to marry you one day,” he said pointedly.

I nearly spat my drink out.

“That’s pretty presumptuous don’t you think?” Or cocky depending on who you ask, I added silently.

He grinned at me as he lifted his hand and ran his index finger down my cheek.

“Watch and see, Gracie,” he promised, dropping his hand but keeping his gaze locked on me. “The name is Victor, Victor Pastore.”

It is so easy to forget those first blissful moments when you meet the person you’re meant to spend the rest of your life with. Instead, we harbor the resentment life has brought upon us and lose touch of the magic that brought two unsuspecting strangers together.

Sitting across from the man I love for the final time I wonder how I ever let myself become so jaded by the trials and tribulations we stumbled upon in our years together. Why did I let the heartache trump the happiness? Why couldn’t I hang on to all the times he made me smile, all the times I looked into his eyes and knew I was his one and only. Why wasn’t the love we created enough to outweigh the torment of the mob?

EXCERPT: Blackie & Lacey

Blackie POV

I don’t tell her I’ll be on the road for the next three days, instead I pretend like everything is fine and I’m not about to declare war on the Corrupt Bastards. Ignorance is bliss and for tonight all I want to be is blissfully buried inside Lacey, drowning in the sweetness she possesses.

Holding her hand as the needle pricked her skin and marked her flesh provided the perfect distraction for a while but now we’re home and the only thing I want distracting me is her body. I watch her unzip the hoodie she’s wearing, glancing over her shoulder as she lowers it down her shoulders and checks to see if the gauze is still taped to her back, covering her new tattoo.

She’s not trying to be seductive but every fucking move she makes has me hard and craving her. Poor girl, I will demolish her tonight so that when I’m on the road, the ache in between her thighs keeps her company, reminding her I’m never too far from her.

She turns around and peers at me from under her eyelashes, slowly reaching behind her to unclasp her bra as I lean against the wall and drink in the show she’s about to treat me to.

“Go on, girl,” I urge, crossing my arms against my chest as I bite the inside of my cheek and watch the straps slide down her arms and expose her to my hungry eyes.

Her thumbs slide into the waistband of her pants, dragging them down her legs before she steps out of them.

“No panties?”

“Not tonight,” she says, reaching behind her to pull her hair out of the clip. Her back arches and her perky tits salute me. “Give me your phone,” she says, shaking out her long hair so it falls down her back and over her shoulders.

Fucking gorgeous.

Curiously, I pull my phone out of the back pocket of my jeans and hand it to her, watching as she pushes her breasts together and snaps a photo of herself. Bending over, she angles her phone and snaps another photo of her heart-shaped ass.

“Damn, girl,” I groan.

She straightens up, eyes on me as she takes two steps closer and spreads her legs. Holding the phone with both hands she lowers it so the lens is level with her pussy and snaps another picture.

“Don’t say I never gave you anything,” she teases as she tosses the phone back, clarifying I’m not the only one leaving reminders behind.

I catch the phone, place it down on dresser before closing the distance between us. With one hand I reach behind me, my ribs are still bruised but I don’t react to the twinge pulling across my midsection as I pull my shirt over my head.

“You want something in return, girl?”

“Depends what you’re offering,” she says coyly, placing both hands on her bare hips as she winks at me.

I don’t offer anything instead I drop to my knees and take what I want and give her what I know she needs, placing my open mouth over the lips of her pussy and pushing my tongue between them. Her hands fall from her hips to my shoulders and her nails dig into my skin as my tongue lavishly strokes her.

Starving.

Insatiable.

I feed off her, lapping at her clit, sucking on it until her hands are in my hair, pulling it begging me to take her over the edge.

Not yet.

Girl needs to squirm a little. That’s right, grind on me girl.

“Blackie–,” she shrieks as I slip two fingers insider her.

“Give it to me, girl,” I grunt against her pussy, pumping my fingers to the same beat my tongue is playing.

Give me something to dream of when I’m off the grid.

Give me something to remember in case I break my promise to you and can’t come back.

I feel her tighten around my fingers, hear her cry out in ecstasy as I continue to selfishly take my memory from her, ingraining it to my mind, body and soul as she loses control over my mouth. Her body goes lax after the tremors subside and I slowly pull my mouth away from her. I lift my eyes to hers and lick my lips, savoring the taste to my palette.

“Fuck, Blackie,” she says breathless, dropping to her knees as she takes my face with her hands. Leaning forward, her tongue sneaks out tasting what’s left behind of her on my mouth.

“You like that don’t you? That’s all you, girl,” I speak against her mouth. Taking hold of her face I pull back and stare into her dark eyes only they’re not dark with demons but dark with lust.

On our knees, arms wrapped around one another, mouths fused together the both of us wish tomorrow never comes.

But it does.

And I kiss Lacey goodbye, promise to come back to her and pray that I do.

I love you, girl.
