TOUGHEST COWBOY IN TEXAS BY CAROLYN BROWN

toughest cowboy in texas cover
A feel-good second-chance romance filled with heart and hope from USA Today bestselling author Carolyn Brown.

The last time Lila Harris was in Happy, Texas, she was actively earning her reputation as the resident wild child. Now, a little older and wiser, she’s back to run her mother’s café for the summer. Except something about this town has her itching to get a little reckless and rowdy, especially when she sees her old partner-in-crime, Brody Dawson. Their chemistry is just as hot as ever. But he’s still the town’s golden boy-and she’s still the wrong kind of girl.

Brody hasn’t had much time lately for anything other than ranching. Running the biggest spread in the county and taking care of his family more than keeps him busy. All that responsibility has him longing for the carefree days of high school-and Lila. She may have grown up, but he still sees that spark of mischief in her eyes. Now he’s dreaming about late-night skinny dipping and wondering how he can possibly resist the one woman he can never forget…

“Carolyn Brown makes the sun shine brighter and the tea taste sweeter. Southern comfort in a book.” -Sheila Roberts, USA Today bestselling author

I was given a copy of this book by Netgalley for an honest review.

Toughest Cowboy in Texas: A Western Romance (Happy, Texas) is a sweet, second chance romance. Brody broke Lila’s heart years ago, and he wished he had never done that. She was his best friend and they were secretly dating. The night before Lila and her mother were to leave town, Brody and Lila were supposed to go on a date. He got cold feet and blew her off to go out with his friends. He tried to talk to her before she left, but she would hear non of it. Lila was the wild child of the town, and Brody’s family did not think she was good enough for him. Coming back to town makes her want to go back to her wild child ways. She is only in town for a short time to try to sell the restaurant, and she will leave and never return. Being in the same town with Brody is bringing all the feelings she has felt for him, and she tries to resist, but they are just too strong to resist. Will they have their second chance on love or will they throw it away again. I love Carolyn Brown’s writing! I never miss a book by her. I recommend this book to everyone. I give TOUGHEST COWBOY IN TEXAS 5/5 STARS.

After years of living under her father’s thumb, Emmeline is ready to break free. But the moment she walks back into his lonely life is the moment he decides never to let her go again. He won’t waste his second chance. All he has to do is win back Emmeline’s heart, keep her safe from the shadows in his past and prove to her that taking a wager on him is a sure bet.

 EXCERPT

“Okay, class. That’s the lunch bell. You can all get your coats for recess and walk to the cafeteria.”

Shouts of glee filled the classroom as fourteen five-year-old kids rushed into the hallway.

We had just finished the story circle and I was shelving books, thinking about how much I was going to miss the kids and my classroom when I left Prescott.

I had no idea where I would move but with Nick living here, I couldn’t stay.

The idea of disappointing my colleagues and abandoning my students gave me a sharp stomachache but the thought of running into Nick on a regular basis, or seeing him with another woman, felt even worse.

Was he with someone now? Did he have kids? Just the thought sent my heart into my stomach. I needed to get away from here before he ripped me to shreds. Maybe I could make it through to summer and finish up the school year. If I lived as a hermit, sticking close to the school and home, I could probably avoid seeing Nick.

Lost in thought, I jumped when a rumbling voice sounded in the room.

“Emmy?”

Avoiding Nick was going to get really hard if he barged into my classroom.

I drew in a labored breath before spinning around, my eyes raking him from head to toe. He was as gorgeous as ever. Not much had changed about him over the years. His beard was a bit shorter and he had more muscle on his frame.

“Emmeline,” I corrected. “What are you doing here, Nick?”

“I told you Friday. We need to talk.”

“I’m not ready to talk yet.”

“Nine years wasn’t enough time to think of something to say?”

I winced at his joke. “Is that supposed to be funny? Because it’s not.”

“Sorry,” he muttered. He looked me up and down. “Fuck, Emmy. Is that what you wear every day?”

I dropped my chin to inspect my clothing. What was wrong with this outfit?

I wore wide-leg black pants with patent nude pumps and a cream blouse with a mandarin collar. Because the blouse was sheer, underneath was a lace-trimmed camisole. At my wrist was the rose-gold, oversized Chanel watch my mother had given me for Christmas the previous year.

I wore this type of clothing almost every day. It was classy and professional, exactly the image I wanted to portray as a teacher. Nothing about my clothing was inappropriate for a kindergarten setting, though it may have been a bit dressy for rural Montana.

“What’s wrong with my outfit?”

“Nothing. You just look beautiful,” he said.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. “Please don’t say things like that to me.”

“I can’t give you a compliment?”

“No. Not anymore.”

“Emmy,” he said softly. “We need to talk about us.”

“Emmeline. And there is no us.”

Contemporary Romance

Tara Johnson’s sacrifices are about to pay off: a senior executive at thirty-five at a Fortune 500 company, she’s one of the two finalists in line for a Managing Director position. Unfortunately, her rival of fifteen years, the charming, infuriating Richard Boyd, is just as qualified, and unlike her, he’s willing to cross pretty much every line to get what he wants.
Of all the things Tara stored in the attic to make it to the top, it’s her personal life she misses the most. That is, until she starts a steamy affair with sex god Aidan, her direct report. Interoffice relationships with a subordinate can mean the end of a career, and when Richard finds out, it’s the perfect opportunity to take his high-heeled nemesis out, especially since he’s still nursing a grudge against Tara for rejecting him years ago.
But Tara’s increasingly domineering lover has his own dark secrets, endangering more than just her career. As her liaison spirals out of control, salvation will come from the man she always thought she hated, and perhaps the only one to truly understand her.
Excerpt
I sauntered to the elevator with my well-practiced “confident” walk, stretched my arm to push the button—
And my high-heeled sandal slipped.
My knee gave in, and I grabbed onto the first thing I could reach to prevent me from the total embarrassment of ending up on the floor in front of everyone. I turned to thank the helpful soul…and came face-to-face with Richard and a lazy twist of his lips settled in the corner of his mouth. I continued to squeeze his arm and my chest brushed his side. But it was more than that; he placed his other arm on my lower back to support me, and I felt a slight tug. The bastard pulled me closer to him in front of everyone watching and my space was suddenly invaded by the scent of his cologne. By Richard.
My insides tightened, and my lips pained as I was still trying to keep them in a semblance of a smile in front of everyone.
“You okay there?” he asked, his expression no less mocking than it was earlier. “You seem flustered. I understand. You finally get to see my place.”
The following moment was the testament to the long road that got me to that point in my career. All the brutal hours I’d slaved in the office, the hard work, missing friends’ events because of last-minute urgent assignments, working through my own birthdays—it all came down to that. My self-control to not kill Richard when every inch of my body believed spending the next twenty years in prison would be well worth it.
I smiled into his snake-green eyes, pushed his arm away and stepped into the elevator. Just as the doors closed separating us, as he thankfully decided to stay with the next group, I managed to think of an appropriate response. But it was too late.

Exclusive Excerpt:

“What are you doing here?”

“Picking you up for dinner,” he said.

“It’s only three thirty. I prefer to put at least six hours between meals and I ate lunch at noon.”

“I’m not here to take you now, Emmy. But I’m giving you a heads-up that I’ll be back at five thirty. Don’t drive home.”

“You could have texted me all of this,” I said.

“Yeah. But then I wouldn’t have been able to do this.”

He crossed the space between us in a millisecond and captured my mouth, wrapping his arms around my waist. His lips pressed roughly against mine as his tongue swept my lower lip. Over and over he stroked until my mouth fell open. When his tongue found mine, I melted. Heat erupted throughout my body and my knees gave out.

When I started to sink to the floor, he stopped kissing me but tightened his grip on my waist.

“I’ve got you.” A crooked grin formed on his lips.

I took a moment to steady my legs and stand tall before stepping back a foot. The skin around my mouth was surely pink from the contact with his beard. But at least it would match my flushed cheeks.

“Five thirty,” he said and walked out the door.

Shit.

Thinking clearly was not an option after a Nick kiss but I really needed to pull myself together. I’d spent last night tossing and turning, replaying all the things Nick had told me these last few months.

You’ve always had my heart, Emmy.

We’re it for each other.

I thought about you every day for nine years.

And I thought about what my mother had said. That my heart had already forgiven him and I just needed to get my head straight with that concept.

Sinking into my chair, I let my head fall into my hands. “What am I going to do?”

I tried to picture what our life could be like. Me happy. Nick and I living a normal life. But every time that image popped in my head, it was immediately followed by the vision of me waking up alone to a note that said he was sorry.

Time was ticking away and I needed to make some decisions. My attorney had emailed me while I was in Italy to say he’d have my divorce papers drafted by the end of the month. Nick was not going to stop inserting himself into my life unless I made it clear we were over.

Were we over?

For nine years, I’d thought we were. But so much was different now. He was everything that I remembered. Kind. Affectionate. Intelligent.

And stubborn. Every time I tried to push him away, he just pushed back harder. But honestly, I really hadn’t put up much of a fight against his advances.

“Ten seconds ago, you let him stick his tongue down your throat with no fight at all, Emmeline,” I mumbled into my hands.
