Excerpt from Unexpected Angels by C.L. Hart

“What sort of business do you have in Phoenix, if you don’t
mind saying?” Pika asked.

“I’m an FBI agent,” Macario explained. “I’ve
been pursuing a very clever con artist for many years. She disappeared off
the radar for a while but several cases matching her M.O. have cropped up in
Phoenix recently. I was on the way to their field office for a
debriefing.”

“I get the feeling this case is personal.”

“It is,” Macario admitted. “This woman destroyed my
family. The worst part is, I reintroduced my dad to her because I didn’t
recognize her at first. She was posing as an organizer at the Salvation
Mission. My relationship with my father was pretty fractured at that point,
and I fell for her feigned friendliness, hook, line, and sinker. It wasn’t
long before I realized it was my dad, she was interested in. More
specifically, she was interested in his money.”

“I’m sensing that you’re estranged from your
father.”

“Are you psychic or something?” Macario asked. There was a
mixture of surprise and suspicion in his voice and expression.

“Like you, I’m good at reading people. I can see the hurt on
your face and hear it in your voice.”

“If you ever get tired of renting cars to harried passengers, you
should consider joining the FBI,” Macario said. “You’re
better at sussing people than half the agents I’ve worked
with.”

“I’d love to hear more of your story, but Dom’s
here,” Pika said, gesturing towards a sprightly aqua-colored hybrid
vehicle pulling up to the curb. A plump little silver-haired man got out of
the vehicle, smiling and waving. Macario couldn’t help but be charmed
by his formal-looking chauffeur’s uniform combined with a jolly
Christmas cap.

About the Author

C. L. Hart, the owner and sole employee of Naughty Netherworld Press, is
spoken of in hushed tones. She is described as The Mad Scribe of the
Northeastern Colorado Plains, The Terrible Old Woman, and The Author That
Should Not Be.

When not penning sanity-destroying works of dystopian fiction, Lovecraftian
fantasy, or old-school horror with the occasional sweet romance thrown in to
upset the cosmic apple cart, Ms. Hart enjoys creating baked goods she hopes
will be considered palatable.

Ms. Hart shares a home in a remote rural town of 134 souls with her adult
son and three cats. Her sense of fashion is best described as Early
Twenty-First Century Unmade Bed. This disabled former nurse can usually be
found arguing with herself about subplots or rehabilitating eldritch
horrors.

The Drain

Professor Vladimir Reed-Field wished he had never taken the job at
Miskatonic University. He’d never had problems like this when he was
teaching at the University of Hawaii. A volcanic eruption would be  a
welcome change over the sound coming from that damn kitchen sink.

The plumber from Blizzard Pipeworks could find nothing wrong with the
drain. She’d scoped it, snaked it, and performed a full flush. She
said that sometimes the plumbing in Arkham’s old houses just made odd
noises.

The problem wasn’t the pipes themselves. It was the thing inside the
pipes that kept whispering the professor’s name.

The Quest for Captain Sammy’s Treasure

Five centuries ago, Captain Sammy buried his treasure in an unlikely
location before letting the sun burn his body to ash to avoid becoming a
vampire. Now the spectral pirate is back in the Jungle of Kled to reclaim
his treasure, accompanied by two unusual friends.

Rilpu is a young sorceress born as a serpent but transformed into a
humanoid female by a spell. The wizard Zkauba hails from the doomed world of
Yaddith. They are soon joined by an impressive companion: Yadira, the
daughter of Nyarlathotep. However, it is possible that even Nyarlathotep’s
daughter may not be able to defeat the abomination standing in the blighted
clearing under the pedestal where Captain Sammy’s treasure is hidden.

Do the ghostly pirate captain and his friends have a chance of reclaiming
the treasure and continuing their mission to save the Cosmos from
destruction or are they destined to fail?

EXCERPT

Darkness and ominous silence dominated the Jungle of Kled. Strange towering trees moving in ways that defied explanation cast shadows that shimmered and danced. Each rustle in the darkness represented a potential threat, and every shadow teemed with unseen danger. A network of twisted vines snaked through the underbrush, their thick tendrils blocking any light that might have penetrated the canopy above.

A palpable sense of dread filled the air as strange and terrifying cries echoed from the shadows. The flapping of massive leathery wings could be heard as monstrous creatures ascended into the dark green sky. Insects of enormous size buzzed and crawled across toxic flowers. The feeling of being watched was ever-present, a sense of malice stalking every step.

It was into this scene that three peculiar travelers fell from an ovoid of light the color of key lime pie filling. Despite the bumpy landing, the first of the trio seemed unperturbed. This sturdy, mature gentleman quickly righted himself, doing a jaunty jig in the air, his silver and gold curls bouncing as he moved. A beam of moonlight passed through him, revealing his ether

Corporate Climbers vs. Bleeding Hearts and Artists

“The one I refer to as the Galaxy Girl is the soul knowed as Pepper Baiij
in this lifetime,” Ketil revealed. “There is those who say that Pepper is
simply unlucky. It is others which say that Pepper brings to herself her own
troubles by being terribly lazy and unmotivated. Pepper is not unmotivated,
if presented with tasks that interest her. She can easy become distracted
from tasks which does not interest her and can become quickly depressed if
forced to carry on with such tasks for extended periods of time.

“Some have said that Pepper is entitled and expects the world to be handed
to her upon a silver platter when she was born with a plastic spoon in her
mouth. This is inaccurate. Pepper is not entitled or a snob, but she was
wired for more than what a nine-to-five job which squashes her creative
spirit offers.

“When we believe that people is only as worthwhile as their willingness to
climb a corporate ladder, then surely people such as Pepper and all of us is
worth about as much as yellow snow. To some people, the only measure of
success is to achieve a number above the salary they earned the previous
year at the corporation to which they drive daily. For these people, the
life of nine to five in a fine office is the best of all possible
atmospheres. But for those who prefer to detail the story of their lives on
creative canvasses, the daily commutes to and from the office is dead-end
drives, for beyond the afterglow effect of receiving money with which to pay
the bills, each hour spent in the office is but a slow march to death for
their soul.

“Thus, the corporate ladder climb is all fine and good for the sort of
Theodore Thirsty what derives joy from being toasty in Topeka in their
luxury office. I do not in any case trust such Theodores. They seem
initially to be people-pleasers, but all too often these men of mystery is
sipping on subterfuge while minty descriptions slip from their silver
tongues to camouflage lemony liabilities. If one is not a watchful Winifred
in the company of these Theodores, one can find oneself knee-deep in the
aftermath of consuming too great a portion of chili cheese custard.”

“It seems ter me, Ketil, that your old China Plate Pepper is much more the
bloomin’ sort of lassie wot prefers whimsy and wildflowers ter stuffy
offices and climbin’ of corporate ladders and whatnot,” Little John observed
as he and Robin shared a platter of what looked disturbingly like a
half-dozen large kangaroo rats that had been left out in the sun to bloat
before being consumed, while Rilpu swallowed a creature resembling a fresh,
plump toad. Yitzy the Yithian, meanwhile, seemed quite content to delicately
sip the apricot-hued ambrosia of the Pxab Plume into one of his four
trumpetlike mouths.

“It is a shame that the juice of the Pxab Plume is not more intoxicating,”
Ketil quipped, pouring a serving of the beverage into a wine goblet the
yellow hue of which reminded the spirit of Earth’s sun. “For I should quite
like to blur the sight of you lot gorging yourselves on rodents and toads
from my unfortunate brain.”

“You ain’t got a brain, Ketil, yer a ghost,” Robin chortled.
