Featuring A Murky Reckoning

Garwick Greedgill is a fisherman desperate to become a legend in the realm
where he dwells. When he pulls a horrific creature up from the polluted sea,
he sacrifices it to the legendary sorceress who is said to live at the
center of the bog near which he dwells.

Yadira of the Roots is said to be the daughter of Nyarlathotep, the
Wish-Bringer From Beyond the Stars. Will Garwick’s actions earn favor
from the storied Bog Hag, or does another fate await him?

Excerpt

An Aquatic Reckoning

Back at the dock, the fisherman hurried to the stables, paying the stable
hand four Electrotokens to rent a cart and a pair of mules to haul his catch
away. He promised to return the cart and the animals the next day.

Garwick Greedgill was thick around the midsection and had a sunken chest
and narrow frame that belied the strength of his wiry arms. His leathery,
tanned skin bore witness to many years spent on a boat’s deck under the
sun’s harsh glare. His hair was a bristly mix of silver and gunmetal gray,
poking through the many holes in a threadbare red cap embossed with the
emblem of a long-forgotten fishing guild. A heavy forehead and scowling brow
framed eyes a sickly shade of murky green, reminiscent of a polluted ocean.
His broad nose bent slightly to one side courtesy of a mishap with the sail
boom. Countless hours spent retrieving catch after catch left his calloused
hands stained with fish scales and innards as he searched for the grand haul
that always eluded him.

Garwick wore frayed puce trousers held up by a filthy, tattered flaxen rope
belt. His once-bright cerise tunic, covered in various colored patches where
he had mended it over the years, was threadbare. It hung loosely over his
prominent belly. The soles of his scuffed brown boots were worn thin,
leaving his feet vulnerable to the cold and damp. He wore a necklace of
oddly shaped stones and bones that he believed would attract good luck. The
longed-for luck seldom materialized.

Garwick drove the cart as close as possible to the bog extending beyond his
property’s edge. He lived in a ramshackle hut between the bog and a
twisting, moss-covered path that led to a meandering creek. Near the hut was
a dingy shed. Every corner held remnants of his profession—a
collection of rusty hooks, tattered nets, and an old, cracked barrel filled
with miscellaneous items of dubious worth. A box containing lucky tokens
collected over the years sat on a dusty shelf. Best of all, there was a
wondrous grimoire. An odor of decay emanated from the book’s brown hide
cover. Garwick did not mind the strange texture or unpleasant scent of the
tome. Based on today’s catch, the grimoire’s magic had already begun to
work.

Full Cold Moon

Story Genre: Shifters, werewolf

Wolf shifter Roza Van Rompaye awakens in a basement filled with Christmas
decorations with a silver manacle around her ankle. Her captor spiked her
drink with silver nitrate, and now he wants her to be his mate and to turn
him. Roza isn’t about to do either. She warns her captor that he will
die if she is still a prisoner when the full cold moon rises.

Excerpt

No matter how I struggled, I couldn’t get free of the chains I was
bound in.

“You’d better hope they hold when the full moon comes out, you
silly shit,” I snarled.

The cadaverous young man with the watery green eyes, blemished face, and
greasy disconnected fuchsia pompadour presented me with a rectangular box
wrapped in metallic celadon paper.

“I don’t want presents from you,” I snapped, turning away.
“If you think holding a woman captive on Christmas Eve is seduction, I
guarantee you’ll die a virgin. Gavril Kuroki, president of GrassHopper Green
Construction and renowned seducer of both men and women, would be horrified
to learn his son was holding his favorite architectural consultant prisoner
in a dungeon that looks like Santa’s elves got hammered and puked all over
the walls while he tries to win her affections with cheesy lingerie. What
the hell is wrong with you, Yair?”

“Roza, please, just look,” Yair insisted. He eagerly unwrapped
the box, revealing a silky puce nightgown. “I’m not trying to
turn you into a sexual object, and I’d never force myself on you. I
know you’re not like those easy women who ride the cock carousel any
chance they get. This negligee is elegant and ladylike, like
you.”

“I’ll never be the fawning captive princess of your
pathetic fantasies.”

“My love, it pains me to keep you prisoner, but until you accept me
as your alpha, I must.”

“Being chained to a concrete wall in a windowless basement stuffed
with Christmas decorations like a holiday goose full of apples and bread
pains me. This plot to make me fall in love with you by forcing a full-blown
English Christmas on me is insane. We’re in Cresval, South Dakota, for
Krampus’ sake, not jolly old London town. I’m the
thirty-five-year-old spawn of a Dutch-American agnostic farmer, not the
demure daughter of flipping Bob Cratchit.”

Snowbound Hearts by C.L. Hart

When Marta Benscoter gets stuck in a snowbound lodge with her ex-husband
and his energetic assistant, she prepares for the worst Christmas
ever.

Marta is proud of Adam’s recovery from alcohol addiction. He is back to
being the man she fell in love with. Giving him another chance is tempting.
However, memories of the events leading to their divorce fill her with
doubt.

Can Marta and Adam move beyond their past, or is a tenuous friendship all
they can hope for?

Excerpt

Enter Adam

Although Adam Benscoter’s hair had grayed significantly, he still looked
the part of the handsome college quarterback he had been when Marta first
met him a lifetime ago. She felt a warmth rising within her, which quickly
cooled when she looked at his sidepiece. The tall young Asian woman was
about twenty years younger than Adam. Her long, wavy hair was dyed amaranth,
and she was dressed in a light coral coat that was entirely inappropriate
for the climate.

“Whoo, I’m so glad to be out of that storm!” the young
woman proclaimed. “You were a boss on that road, Ad-Man!”

“At least this one looks like she’s been out of high school for
more than two years,” Marta muttered under her breath.
“I’m so glad we never had any children. Imagine having someone
your own age as your stepmother.”

“Hi there, Ladies, I’m Clara Wola,” the young woman
introduced herself, extending a friendly hand. “Since it appears we’ll
be spending lots of time together, we might as well get to know each
other.”

“Hi Clara, I’m Ophrah Pololáník. Oh goodness,
your hands are so cold! Miss Tia, could we have a hot chocolate over here
for this young lady?”

“Dear Ophrah, always the mother hen,” Adam said kindly.

“Wait—you two know each other?” Clara asked.

“Yes, and he knows me too,” Marta said coldly. “Hello,
Clara, I’m Marta Benscoter, your—what is he to you,
Dear?”

“He’s my boss,” Clara said, a puzzled expression on her
face. “But we’ve also become good friends since he hired me six
years ago.”

“We’re going to make our partnership official when we get back
to Diamond Bar,” Adam said with a grin. “Then she can finally
stop calling me Boss.”

“Well, that’s generous of you,” Marta quipped. “I
hate to rain on your parade, Ms. Wola, but even if you aren’t
officially marrying Saint Adam, I hope you’ve spoken to an attorney
about protecting your interests in the event of an eventual dissolution of
your partnership.”

“It’s not a romantic partnership; it’s purely
business,” Clara corrected. “I’ve been Adam’s
assistant at Cloud Limited since getting my doctorate from Oceanside Tech.
You must be the ex-wife he won’t talk about. It seems like you two
need to iron some things out.”

Night of the Living Stomach

The body was dead but the stomach was not. It lurched its way out of the
incision and landed with a plop on the autopsy room floor. It inched along
tasting cleaning fluid until it found the spotless break room. It climbed
onto the pristine counter and enveloped the shiny coffee maker.

The stomach recoiled in disgust at the flavor of more cleaning products
combined with bitter coffee grounds. It missed its host. Isaac Head never
failed to feed it on command. In fact, he’d been about to bite into a
juicy burger when he plowed into an oncoming semi.

time at the care center where people like Gerry live out their final
days.

A conversation between the pair reveals unexpected truths about both of
them.

Excerpt

For eons, I have been looking for a way to right the wrongs committed at
the time of my birth. I have once again encountered Malak, son of Lucifer;
he with his heart burst open like a snowdrop’s pouting petals.
However, to my dismay, Malak, the world-builder and shadow-weaver, has
forgotten who he was. He is bound to a broken, dying body, although at
night, his soul roams free.

In our first meeting at the care center where he now resides, I approached
Malak cautiously, unsure of how he would respond to my presence. Bewildered
disorientation had replaced the once alert, inquisitive look in his eyes.
Like a spark struggling to ignite, I noted a faint glimmer of recognition,
but it was obscured by the murk of confusion overtaking his decaying
memory.

“Malak,” I said softly as I took his hands in mine. “It’s
your old friend Yadira. Do you remember who you once were? World-builder,
shadow weaver, beloved son of Lucifer.”

It was evident from his expression that his mind was seeking an elusive
memory. A longing for understanding replaced his puzzlement.

“Who… who am I?” he mumbled, his voice feeble and uncertain.
“I feel like fragments of a shattered mirror, lost in a labyrinth of
forgotten dreams.”

A pang of sympathy pierced my heart. Seeing this brilliant being trapped in
a decaying vessel, his bright, inquisitive soul longing for release, was
tragic. I took his trembling hand in mine, hoping my touch would serve as an
anchor, reconnecting him to his forgotten self.

“Malak, you were once a weaver of worlds, a creator of infinite
possibilities,” I explained. “Your mind held the secrets of the
cosmos, and your hands shaped realms beyond imagination.”

Despite the fragility of his body, a spark of ancient power flickered
within him as he struggled to break free from the fog of
forgetfulness.

“I remember whispers of worlds born from the rhythm of my
thoughts,” he murmured. “Visions of beauty and darkness once
flowed through me like a river of eternal creation.”

I continued to paint a picture of his former existence, hoping to unleash
the dormant power lying buried deep within.

“Malak, reclaim your identity,” I urged. “I will help you
mend the fractures in your soul, reuniting the shattered fragments, and
restoring the balance disrupted long ago. The broken body that confines you
is insignificant compared to the boundless potential within. The key to
redemption and rectification lies in you. Please assist me in redressing the
wrongs of the past. With you healed and my parents reunited, we will forge a
future where your power, reclaimed and revitalized, can help restore balance
to the cosmos.”
