Excerpt
That first date with Preston checked all the boxes. We strolled and laughed and acted silly. I did see him take a few sips from a silver flask as we went from bar to bar up one side of Sixth and down the other. But he didn’t seem too inebriated and he didn’t try to force me to drink, either.
Halfway through the night, we morphed into a large group. He wasn’t kidding about some of his friends joining us. We seemed to pick up one or two more at each place we stopped. They were all high or drunk. I didn’t see anyone sober other than us—well, me. Preston may have been sober, but each bar was so loud and jam-packed, conversation became more and more impossible. All I had to go on was how well he could walk.
Some of our group couldn’t even do that.
Lines of people snaked away down the packed sidewalks and away from the entrances to every place that featured music. The whole street throbbed with sound and the entire downtown area felt wrapped in laughter and drenched in lights.
Later, he wanted us to go to the lake to go skinny dipping with his friends. But that wasn’t me. Not at all. “Please take me home,” I said. But he refused.
“Come on,” he said. “It’ll be fun.”
When I refused, he turned on the road leading there anyway.
I insisted he let me out.
He slowed and stopped, calling my bluff.
I took a deep breath, stepped out, and started walking back the way we had come. Though my outside appearance was calm, my insides were like waves white-capping near the shore. It was a long way back to the main road. I hoped and prayed someone I knew would come along and give me a ride. It wouldn’t be Joanna, though. She and Antonio were doing the Zombie Walk again. This time there would be a prize for the best look. How I wished I’d gone with them.
When Preston realized I wasn’t bluffing, he turned the car around and drove alongside me as I strode down the shoulder of the road, arms crossed over my chest.
I could hear him attempting to apologize, but this time his words fell into the gap between us like pebbles dropped into a dry well. “I was only joking,” he said. “You know I would never make you do anything you didn’t want.”

create your characters? I don’t create characters intentionally. They come

5. What is your
favorite Halloween Memory? Halloween is one of my favorite times of year.
When I was a kid, my siblings and I would traipse up and down the streets of
our small hometown, trick-or-treating. We basically had the run of the entire
town. On a scarier note, a man came in our house one Halloween night after we
were all asleep (Dad was out of town) and my mom hit him in the head with a
hammer when he appeared in our bedroom door. We made our escape and he went to
the hospital then jail. We kids just knew he had broke in to steal our
Halloween candy. It had been a banner trick-or-treating night that year.

you, do not go in the spooky old house…
When a small planes crashes behind Jase’s rural home, the ghost of the pilot
begins to haunt him. Jase can’t figure out what to do until the day he sees his
classmate, Stevie-girl, enter the legendary haunted house. That’s when he
decides if anyone can help him solve the mystery, she’s the one.
Snippet:
The West Texas night wind
whispered and whistled around the window frames. I was in my mom’s favorite
chair reading The Tell-Tale Heart
when I heard the stuttering drone of a small plane. In our rural setting, it
sounded very low and very loud.

Then the noise stopped.
Lady, the German shepherd I’d
found lying mangled and near death beside the road, was standing in front of
the picture-window, head cocked to one side.

The silence was thick and cold.
As we watched, the tail of a small
plane disappeared behind the line of firs west of the house. There was still no
sound but the wind.

I dialed the operator and told her
what I’d seen. She immediately patched me through to the Sheriff’s office so I
could tell the dispatcher what had happened. Then I ran outside to see what I
could see. Lady was right behind me.

Monster Mash Countdown Blitz -Day 8
Ann Swann was born in the small West Texas town of Lamesa. She grew up much like Stevie-girl in The Phantoms series, though she never got up the nerve to enter the haunted house.
Ann has done everything from answering 911 Emergency calls to teaching elementary school. She lives in Texas with her husband, Dude, a rescue cat named Oscar, and a part-time box turtle named Piggy.
When she’s not writing, Ann is reading. Her to-be-read list has grown so large it has taken on a life of its own. She calls it Herman.
Stutter Creek (book one) is a Ann Swann, brilliantly hidden within a suspense-filled tale of a psychotic serial killer with a chip on his shoulder. It is also a classic tale of young love lost, and a life of regrettable what-ifs.
