SYNOPSIS

Jeni Acerna’s longstanding friends-with-benefits relationship with her bestie, Brian Hamilton, has been both blissful and troublesome. Unable to commit to any other relationship, she compares everyone to Brian in or out of bed. She has been in lust (and love) with him for years. Fear of losing him has prevented her from confronting him with her feelings.

After several months of not seeing each other, Jeni and Brian meet in Cleveland for a friend’s wedding. Their weekend getaway, however, is anything but normal. A five hundred dollar bet. A tryst in a garden. Their passion picks up where it left off – hot and heavy. However, this time Brian wants more than Jeni just in his bed. Can he can convince her to take the risk?

EXCLUSIVE REAL EXCERPT

Jeni walked down the terminal corridor and ducked into the closest restroom. She peered at herself in the mirror and ran her fingers through her long, chestnut hair, letting it fall over her shoulders. She pulled out her lip gloss from the side pocket of her brown shoulder bag and spread it over her lips.

There!

She smiled. Now, she didn’t look liked she’d been crammed into a plane seat for over two hours, shifting about trying to find a comfortable position. She never minded travel, in fact, she rather enjoyed it, but the excitement at seeing Brian had made her restless.

She headed for the escalator that would take her to the baggage claim area, where Brian would meet her. Her heart raced a bit as the organ always did when it had been a while since she’d seen him. She could never really explain why the jitters overtook her. They had known each other for eternity, but the butterflies fluttered in her stomach anyway.

As she stepped on the escalator, she saw him standing at the bottom, waiting. His lopsided smile spread across his lips when he noticed her. His Ohio State baseball cap was pulled low, just how she loved it, and his dark brown curls wisped out from underneath. A black T-shirt clung to his torso, showing off the lean muscle tone of his arms and chest. Light blue jeans slung low on his hips. His chocolate eyes sparkled as he looked up her descent.

Several people stood between Jeni and Brian on the escalator, but she didn’t care. She hustled down the moving stairs, slinging her large duffel bag over her shoulder. When she reached the bottom step, she tossed her bag to the side and threw her arms around his neck. He picked her up and swung her around. Bystanders probably thought they were lovers who hadn’t seen each other in a while.

Well, in some ways, that was an accurate assessment.

Jeni buried her face in his neck. He smelled refreshing and familiar. Fresh mint with a hint of sandalwood and something just him. God, she loved his scent. Made her feel at home.

“I never realize how much I miss you until I see you again.” His words brushed past her ear and sent shivers through her.

“I know what you mean.” Pulling back from her nestled spot on his neck, her gaze landed on his. Warm eyes, twinkling with mischief. His smile remained. “You look great!” She kissed his cheek.

“As do you.” He placed a gentle kiss on her lips. His mouth was soft and moved over hers lightly. He slid his tongue over the seam of her lips, and Jeni moaned, unable to stop the sound from escaping her. His smile stretched against her lips. He thought that sound meant she’d fold. Uh-uh!

She pulled back from the kiss and grinned at him. If she let that kiss go any further, he would be correct, and they would barely make it back to his car. She shook her head and smirked. He twisted his lips in disappointment, but his chocolate eyes danced with the challenge. Then he grabbed her bag and her hand and walked out of the airport towards his car.

SYNOPSIS

A made man versus the cartel …

The job was simple—a contract from a powerful crime family to retrieve Valeria Lòpez. A woman believed to have been forcibly taken by one of the major cartels in Mexico. Easy enough, right?

Christopher Guzzi thought so, but the details made it difficult. He didn’t expect to trick his way into the path of the cartel leader only to develop feelings for the woman he was meant to recover. That leader’s wife. Every step he takes is risky, and one wrong move could leave them both dead. Too bad that’s not enough to keep him away from Valeria as he tries to find a way to free her.

Hope is a dangerous thing.
Love is even worse.

Here, everybody plays dirty.
No one can be trusted.

CHRIS teaser 2

EXCERPT

“Sorry to keep you waiting,” Gian said, giving Chris a wave to enter the office first, “shall we get started?”

Dare picked up the remote on his desk and pointed it at the screen once Chris and his father entered the office. The picture changed when he pressed a button, showcasing Andino in a tux, a woman in a white wedding dress, and a little girl between them being held by a black-haired, beautiful woman with a wide smile.

And God, yeah, beautiful didn’t do the woman justice. Her joyful smile brightened her delicate features, and her black hair had a glossy sheen under the sunlight. Tall, and curvy, the lavender dress she had picked for the day hugged her body and showed off all kinds of leg.

With only a picture, Chris thought whoever had taken it had captured the woman’s beauty, her confidence, and her womanly appeal all at the same time.

Quite a feat.

“Valeria Lòpez,” Cree said when Dare stayed quiet. “Formerly Gomez, but she changed it after a forced marriage to Jorge Lòpez at fifteen when the cartel killed her mother down in Mexico, it became a means to blackmail her father. Or, those are the details we have.”

“That’s all we had,” Andino muttered.

“Right,” Dare said, nodding at Andino, “and so this is what we’re working on. Somehow, around sixteen from what we understand, Valeria was pregnant, and ran away from her husband, and the cartel. She found her way to the States, and we don’t know how. What we do know is her daughter was born in the States, and at some point, she met Haven Murphy.”

“Marcello, now,” Andino added under his breath.

That name rang a bell.

Chris looked to Andino. “Your new wife?”

Andino nodded. “The two happened to be roommates for quite a while before I came along, Valeria worked for Haven, and one night she came home … seemed like Val up and left and so did—”

Dare pressed a button, and the screen changed to a single picture of the little girl Valeria had been holding in the wedding picture. “Her daughter, Maria. Who is six. We cannot find anything for this little girl anywhere at the moment. No school records in Mexico, nothing for a doctor, and … yeah.”

Chris let out a heavy breath as he took in the black-haired, brown-eyed child. She looked all of maybe five on the screen if that. Cute, with a wide, toothy smile, and her arms high in the air as her yellow summer dress spun around her legs.

“Jorge Lòpez is her father,” Dare said, “but what’s important is … Valeria ran from the cartel, we’re aware she was forced into marriage, and at some point, they took her again. We have every reason to believe she is back with the cartel.”

“Might she want to be there?” Chris asked.

“Possibly,” the man returned, “but you must figure that out when you get inside, won’t you?”

Gian hummed under his breath beside his son. “And that’s why you want me here, isn’t it? Being the boss of the Guzzis, I’m not affiliated to the Marcellos on paper as a business partner, they wouldn’t expect me to go there for her, and I could use my status and territory as a transaction for them, correct?”

“They wouldn’t suspect something’s up, no.”

Chris looked to the two Marcello men as this was their job. They had come here with it, and they wanted to retrieve the woman. “Why is she important? A cartel wife … that’s playing with fire. I’m familiar with details about the Lòpez cartel. Jorge, he’s the oldest son, and has taken over more now that his father took a step back years ago. And you want to … what, take his wife and child from him?”

Andino arched a brow, replying, “I respect the hesitance, but the woman never asked for the life they gave her. From what my wife explained, and I understood, Val stayed on the run and had been for years, which meant she had to be running from something.”

“Or someone,” Chris finished.

“Jorge, likely,” Andino agreed. “Val and Haven … she needs to know if Val is where she wants to be, is safe, and happy. And if she is, fine, we leave it alone. But if she isn’t, and if she needs help, that’s what you’re here to do.”

Chris cleared his throat and nodded once. “All right.”

CHRIS teaser 2

EXCLUSIVE RELEASE EXCERPT

A sharp Boss from behind them had Jorge turning before he approached the table to pull out a chair for himself, likely leaving her to fend for herself.

“What?” Jorge asked the man who kept a safe distance.

The section they were dining in had no other patrons.

A private area?

What strings had Chris pulled?

“Your father is on the phone.”

Jorge grunted and waved a hand. “I will call him back.”

“He’s adamant that—”

Fine.” Jorge gave Chris a nod, saying, “I will be a few minutes. I’m sure you can entertain yourself without me.” He eyed the platters on the table, adding, “Begin eating without me, hmm? We eat, and then we do business.”

“Right,” Chris agreed. “No worries.”

Jorge pivoted on his heel, unbothered with leaving Valeria there to fend for herself. She was stunned, however, when Chris was quick to come around to her side of the table, and the first thing he did was grab a chair to pull out.

For her.

This close, she smelled the distinct aroma of his cologne. It fit his personality, she thought. Understated, but with distinct notes. Complex. Like him.

Valeria ignored the heat in her gut, never mind the way her heart raced when his hand came to rest on her waist when his dark tenor urged her to, “Sit.”

Lord.

Definitely a problem.

One she didn’t expect to have.

She held onto the clutch in her hands tighter as she took the seat he offered, but didn’t breathe any easier when his hand left her side. In fact, she wished for it to come back. “Thank you.”

“Never thank a man for being a gentleman,” he said, rounding the table to take his own seat, “because then they seem to think every kind act deserves a reward, hmm? It’s better not to teach men that behaving means getting something in return.”

Valeria stared across the table, unsure of what to say. Chris stared back, a sensual smile curving his lips. Finally, her brain worked.

“Why did you ask him to bring me here tonight?”

Chris shrugged. “Because I find you fascinating, and he’s slightly more interesting when you’re near. Also, it might keep him in line.”

“Good luck with that. Jorge is … uncontainable.”

To say the least.

“Well, he has to behave a little, if he wants my father’s business. I thought I should remind him of that before I arrive at the ranch. And you, well, you can enjoy the meal. I paid a lot for this evening, but if you smile even once, it’ll be worth it.”

Valeria did just that.

Smile.

Chris winked back.

Damn.

TMaisie thinks of herself as a tough, resourceful woman, and that’s about to be put to the test. After leaving her abusive husband and making off with all the cash she can carry, her only goal is to stay out of sight and survive. Then she learns her husband is six feet under. She should be able to relax, only she fears she will be blamed for his murder. So she hops a train and finds herself as a Bridal Train Bride.

Henry Cartwright loves tending the land, growing crops and raising animals for market, though it’s a lonely life. When his family urges him to take a wife, he can’t think of anything he has to offer a female besides hard work, but he settles on a Bridal Train Bride. Maisie is soft-spoken and reserved, leaving Henry thinking of her as a frightened animal, and he longs to set her at ease.

With newfound freedom and peace in her heart at long last, Maisie begins to wonder if she was wrong about all men being the same. Maybe this one deserves a chance—and a bit of the kindness he doles out to her so easily. When problems arise on the farm, they’re forced to work together and fight for the life they share. It just might be time for Maisie to dig up that satchel full of money she buried out back.

EXCERPT

He caught her staring—again. From the shade of his hat, his blue eyes settled over hers. “Would you like to help me refresh the horses, Maisie?”

His deep voice was gentle, but that could just be for his horses’ sakes, keeping them from bolting across the prairie without a driver in the seat. Now that her imagination had taken that turn, she could not fathom what she would do if such a thing happened. She had no clue how to drive a pair of horses, let alone hooked to the cart.

After a second of consideration, she gave a nod. When she started to climb to the ground, Henry was there with his big palm open to help her down.

This time, her stomach did not hurt as much about touching a strange man, and she only paused a heartbeat before allowing him to assist her down. Once her boots touched the ground, she pulled away and looked around.

“What do you think of the Kansas countryside?” he asked as he moved to the horses.

“It’s odd how I have been staring at it for over an hour but from here, standing here on the plains, makes me see it in a different light.”

The corner of his mouth quirked up, and he ducked his head as he tended the animals. “I know the feeling. Like when you walk a road you truly know it. All the dips and rises, the rocks you wouldn’t see while riding along.”

She nodded, surprised at how easily he put her thoughts into words, when she could not begin to do that for herself.

Easing forward, she watched him check leather straps and forelegs before straightening. He pierced her in his solid stare. The blue of his eyes did not have a sinister light, but were a deep, clear blue like the sky above.

“Can you reach into the back of the cart?” he asked.

She nodded. “What am I searching for?”

“A grain sack. I like to encourage my horses when they tire, give them a taste of the treat they’ll get once they’re at home and tucked up in the barn.”

She felt a pull of her lips and was shocked it was a reaction to the picture he painted with his words… and it was almost a smile.

When had she last smiled? Years.

Moving to the back of the cart, she stood on tiptoe to reach over the side. When she located the sack he spoke of, she withdrew it and carried it back to Henry. As she neared, she found his words about the road were true. She had traveled all this time with the man and had never noticed the way he smelled before now…

Like grass and the grains he dumped onto a broad palm for the horses to nose. Henry also had a bit of a leathery man smell that was not unpleasant.

As one horse nudged most of the grains off his hand, Maisie gave a small giggle.

His head snapped up, and she could not be more stunned that the sound had come from herself. If she had no cause to smile, she certainly had not heard herself laugh in… well, too long.

To cover the sound and dispel her nervousness, she began to chatter. “That horse is a bit of a pig. He is in such a hurry to eat that he pushed it all off your hand. One time, I saw a dog like that. After he discovered the dish was empty, he pushed the bits all around the room, into the corner even.”

Henry stared at her with a pleasant, open expression on his face.

A nice-looking face, she saw now. If they had children, they would not be terribly unfortunate in the looks department.

The notion in her mind slapped a hot flush across her cheeks. She felt her face scorch and a sweat bead on her nape. Why had children come to mind? That only led to how one created children.
