The Three Brothers Trilogy, Book One

Three brothers…three destinies…three chances to fail.

One country hangs in the balance.

Peacetime in Etria is no time to become a knight. War lies in the past and
the future is for growing new things. Swords become plows and
soldiers become farmers, artists, shop owners, and poets. Everyone knows
that training for a war that may never come is a waste of time, but
for
the three grandsons of the greatest war hero in history, knighthood
isn’t a choice; it’s destiny.

The three inseparable boys set off on three very different roads to
knighthood. The eldest travels the straight path. The middle boy
follows
the crooked way of the rebel. The youngest…he follows the trail of
legend.

When war returns all too soon, the boys will be tested. They will hold in
their hands the lives of the most powerful and important people of
all of Etria. If they fail, their country may fall into darkness and
horror.

But these boys were born to be knights, to protect their king, land, and
people no matter the cost to themselves. In the end, they will give
their all, but will it be enough?

Chapter 1

Heather felt bad for Kyle.

She’d tried so many times to convince him the problem was her and not him. She’d never had an orgasm and assumed she never would, but she’d come to terms with it long ago.

Kyle, however, wouldn’t accept it, and he refused to get off until she did, which meant he never came.

At first, she thought he went soft because Heather couldn’t get into it, but the last time they’d tried, he told her he didn’t deserve an orgasm if he couldn’t make her happy.

Why her easygoing boyfriend chose this topic to dig his heels in was beyond her. When she’d told him she could give him a blowjob and get him off, and assured him she didn’t need him to touch her while she did it, he’d seemed horrified at the idea she was okay with giving him pleasure when she received none.

She’d had this speech all prepared about how she could give him a few blowjobs a week, and maybe do the sex thing once or twice a week — as long as he didn’t expect her to enjoy it. However, after his reaction to her suggestion, she’d crawled inside herself with the knowledge she was about to lose the love of her life because something inside her was broken and she didn’t know how to fix it.

Should she tell him, again, she was more than happy to give him blowjobs as often as he wanted, and she’d even do the sex thing with him once or twice a week — but expecting her to actually enjoy it was asking too much? She didn’t know any other options.

But she’d chickened out and said nothing more, expecting he’d break up with her in the coming days.

But now, a few weeks later, she hadn’t lost him yet.

Unfortunately, he was trying again with soft music and candles while he licked her clit and pussy like it was supposed to magically turn something on in her. Heather found herself trying to find shapes in the texture on the ceiling in the flickering candlelight. She didn’t want to hurt his feelings but desperately hoped he’d stop soon.

Her mind drifted, and Heather pondered once again whether she should’ve allowed their relationship to move into a romantic one. They’d been friends for years before they started dating, and they’d been together three months before having sex. After another three months of dating with several failed attempts, she wondered what it would take to convince him she just wasn’t wired for it. She’d even tried to explain what sensory processing disorder meant, and how her time in a Korean orphanage, hungry and in a lot of pain, had made her turn her pain signals off when she was a baby — when she’d never given such personal details to a boyfriend before.

She’d let their relationship move to the next level because she couldn’t deny how much she loved him, but now she was worried she was going to lose him. He was her rock, her best friend, and she felt more at home in his arms than anywhere else on the planet.

Her eyes watered, because it was beyond time she accepted that she was never going to manage a longterm relationship with a healthy male.

There was no doubt Kyle loved her. He’d quietly seduced her for years, and had been a great friend who’d become so much more. She’d been determined to keep him in the friend box because she valued his friendship too much to lose him over sex, but he’d finally convinced her he loved her no matter what, and she’d gotten tired of fighting her own feelings for him. She’d stupidly hoped it might be different this time.

So here they were, madly in love with each other, but she was too broken to make it work.

Kyle kissed his way up her stomach, and she breathed in relief with the realization he was trying to call tonight’s experiment quits without anyone being upset it hadn’t worked. He maneuvered through the center of her breasts, gave her a peck on the lips, a soft kiss on the forehead, settled a sheet over them, and pulled her into his warm embrace. “It’s okay, babe. It’s not your fault it didn’t work. We’ll figure out what turns you on.”

Heather spooned into him and relaxed into his arms, but she silently wondered if he’d still want her once he figured out nothing would work.

Dire news arrives from Cantington. Rumors of dragon sightings are stirring
up fears based on old stories that depict dragons as blood-thirsty,
fire-breathing monsters. To protect his people, the Overking decrees that
all dragons must die.

Twelve-year-old Eliana knows the truth about dragons. After all, her best
friend, Winston, is one! Fresh off an adventure where she saved her kingdom
using her ability to communicate with Winston’s family, she is now
excited to hone her skills through her Dragon Speaker apprenticeship. That
is until she begins having a recurring nightmare of a scar-faced soldier, a
poison-tipped spear, and an orb that glows in the dark. What’s even
more worrisome is that Winston is having the same nightmare.

When they hear of the Overking’s decree, they realize their dreams
may not be a coincidence. Eliana must quickly learn how to use her ability
to understand dragons to help new friends–and old–solve a
mystery about an ancient treasure and save the dragons from certain death.
Along the way, there are lessons to be learned about the dangerous desire
for fame, about the transitory nature of plans, and about how treasure can
mean different things to different people…and dragons.

EXCERPT

FOREWORD

Being a businessperson these days is a constant balancing act. Questions of how we can be most effective and productive collide with questions about what the best style of leadership is and how much we should bring our personality into the office.

I’ll be honest I never felt like I had the exact right answer. I knew I wanted to be kind, compassionate, and helpful when it came to my peers and employees, but I couldn’t put into words what that style was. Nor could I have developed an expansive vision for that kind of leadership or a method for quantifying its effectiveness and progress.

Miraculously, Michael Barnes has done all of that right here in Hardwired To The Heart. He’s taken his vast coaching and executive experience and delivered a clarion call we should all heed. Yes, being good people at work, like we are at home, is the most effective and healthiest leadership style.

He calls this being an authentic servant leader, and it’s like a breath of fresh air in a musty room.

But as much as I knew I had always wanted to embrace this style, what Michael taught me is that I have so much to learn. That’s because there’s always something new to learn, and we must unleash our inner curiosity and need for real human connection in the workplace. Without that, miscommunications, errors, and outright hostility will inevitably flourish, killing company culture and dragging down company profits.

I’ve seen a strange correlation in my time in business. As the company’s morale goes up, so do its profits. When morale sinks, profits tend to sag. It’s almost like nourishing contentment among our working peers impacts how hard they want to work and how productive they are. Who would’ve thought??

We’re all familiar with those classic workplace archetypes. There’s the stern boss ready to blow a gasket at a moment’s notice over the tiniest mistake. The chipper secretary. The quiet loner in the office. The hyper-ambitious salesman. Eager interns. The list goes on and on.

We must remember that there are people underneath all of these roles that we play, and in many cases the way we play these roles needs to evolve as we learn and grow as people.

In particular, it’s time to retire the short-tempered boss stereotype. All of us either had a boss like that or knew someone who did, a boss who felt squeezing employees and releasing anger into the workplace would produce the best results. Generations of executives have come and gone without realizing they were behaving in a way that was a disservice to their employees, their companies, and themselves.

Times are changing though, mainly because people like Michael Barnes are at the forefront of a movement that brings human nature, vulnerability, and empathy into our data-driven corporate ethos. Let’s listen for a change, sit on the same side of the desk as our office guests, and try to create a hospitable office environment.

That doesn’t mean coddling people or refusing to hold anyone accountable for errors, misjudgments, or even malfeasance, but let’s treat these circumstances as the learning experiences they are and try to find the humanity within them.

Keep these questions in mind. What does the way I’m responding to this situation say about me? Am I treating the people around me with the respect and dignity they deserve? Are any assumptions getting in the way of my understanding about what’s going on?

And lastly and most importantly: Is my behavior going to motivate my employees to do better because they feel valued and seen, or will it detract from their enthusiasm because they feel brushed off or not given constructive and specific feedback?

Michael Barnes and Hardwired To The Heart have given us a crucial roadmap for success as a business leader. It’s given me a lot to think about and has proven even more valuable the second time through. This should be required reading at your next corporate retreat.

Best of all, I’m more excited about heading into work than ever. If that’s not a win, I don’t know what is.
