Victory can only come by letting go

It is with a life centered on our Lord that we can be Healed through the
Power of Love. Amidst the trials, tribulations, and storms we experience
with family, relationships, and friends, the Lord guides us if we surrender
to His will, His purpose, and His plan for our lives.

Yasmin is estranged from her family and has a secret she has vowed to never
reveal. With her heart scarred and filled with remorse and fear, she finds
trusting, letting go, forgiving, and accepting the Lord’s will a challenge.
Orlando’s life is mundane until Yasmin returns. His goal becomes helping
Yasmin, convincing her to love and be loved, showing her how to be happy,
and persuading her to overlook her past. Neither Yasmin nor Orlando can
obtain victory without letting the Lord take control of their lives.

Orlando slept soundly for several hours before waking abruptly. When he gazed at the clock, he got up, took a quick shower, donned the suit he chose to wear to the burial, and rushed out of the apartment. Mass was at 8:00 a.m., and afterward they would head to the cemetery.

It was drizzling when Orlando stepped outside the building, but it began to pour as he got in his car. After several attempts to start the car, Orlando leaned back against the driver’s seat and watched the water splatter on the windshield. He’d planned to take the car to Raul’s shop but got caught up helping Raul plan Roberto’s wake and funeral and overlooked it.

Taking the umbrella from under the driver’s seat, he walked to the corner and hailed a cab. He gazed out the window of the taxi as it sped down the street.

It was dreary weather to attend a burial. Orlando was exhausted. He’d been going to bed late, sleeping only a few hours, and then getting up early. He needed to rest before returning to work the next day, which might prove challenging. After going to the cemetery, he might be able to lie down for a while before heading to Clara’s anniversary party. That seemed unlikely, though, given the weather and the long drive to the cemetery and back.

As his mother requested, he’d dropped off the beverages he’d purchased the night before. He left shortly after arriving and was glad Clara wasn’t there. He wanted to avoid another quarrel. Clara was argumentative and constantly meddled in his affairs.

It was true that opposites attract. Clara’s husband, Mario, was a thin, quiet man. Nothing swayed him one way or another. He kept his comments and opinions to himself, something Orlando appreciated, more so when Roberto’s illness and passing revived the gossip about Yasmin’s estrangement. Maria, Luisa, and even Isabel took unwarranted delight in soiling Yasmin’s reputation more than it already was.

It was spiteful. None of them had any idea what happened, yet all of them spoke with absolute authority. Orlando was convinced that Yasmin was unaware Roberto was sick. She had not purposely stayed away and wasn’t being vindictive, coldhearted, or indifferent as rumored. Her grief and pain were genuine, not that Raul or Isabel cared about that. The unnecessary scenes they provoked were hideous, and neither considered the misery it would cause Carmen.

As he’d anticipated, Yasmin attended the wake, and Carmen’s prayers were answered. It was the work of the Lord. Josefa had shown up at the precise moment and intervened, and Yasmin was able to pay her last respects to her father. Orlando wished it hadn’t been so brief and that Isabel and Raul could have been civil. Regardless of past events, Yasmin didn’t deserve to be treated with such contempt.

He was convinced a lecture from Raul was forthcoming. Regardless of how Raul felt, Orlando had provided Yasmin with the itinerary for the burial, agreeing with Carmen that grieving required unity. Family problems could be addressed after the rituals ended. Both Raul and Isabel seemed oblivious to that. There was another critical issue they both ignored, or at least it appeared that way to him. That issue was Carmen’s health.

Getting out of the taxi, Orlando saw Raul standing in front of the entrance to the church. The rain had dwindled to a drizzle. Looking up, he noted the dark clouds. His hopes of getting home early were unlikely, and the trip to the cemetery would be prolonged by the weather. He decided not to worry. If the burial didn’t interfere with his plans for the evening, it didn’t matter. Resting could be postponed.

He skipped several steps to join Raul.

“What’s wrong with your cell? I called you several times last night and this morning.”

“Uncharged.” Orlando had put it on mute after the incident with Isabel and had forgotten to change it.

“Okay.” Raul was skeptical. “When can we talk?”

“Anytime.” Orlando anticipated having that conversation the night before when he returned to the funeral parlor after Yasmin left. Josefa was waiting for a taxi with her family and told him Raul had just driven away with Isabel.

“Where did you take Yasmin?” Raul asked.

“To her car,” Orlando replied.

“Whatever she’s doing must be profitable,” Raul bantered with animosity. “She’s your sister,” he reminded Raul, annoyed by the double meaning in his words.

“Finish your degree. Become an attorney,” Raul mocked.

“I might,” Orlando responded. His mother and Clara reverberated the same advice. He had completed his bachelor’s degree and was enjoying his position as a paralegal. Researching cases, interviewing witnesses, gathering sufficient data to substantiate the innocence of their clients, and doing clerical work were challenging and time-consuming. Some cases required long hours and days of preparation before they went to trial, which forced him to work overtime and weekends when necessary. He reconsidered his goal of going to law school but had postponed it for the time being.

“You’re defending the wrong client,” Raul humored, smirking.

“Her case was never on trial,” Orlando pointed out.

Excerpt

Chapter One

FALLOUT

GRACE

Well, it’s been a day.

I woke up this morning a prisoner in a castle tower.

In Switzerland.

Seriously.

I managed to escape through a stone shaft that might have been a medieval
toilet. I searched the whole castle until I found him, my husband Jared,
chained up in an actual dungeon—seriously—dying from gunshot
wounds that weren’t healing.

Darwin Speer did that. Inventor. Genius. Billionaire. Megalomaniac.

I thought Jared was going to die in my arms. But then I sang, and he
started to heal.

God did that.

And then Rael, who’s a Nephilim and looks like a giant man-lizard,
got loose and broke a hole in the castle wall, and we escaped, crossed a
lake, in which I almost drowned, and ran up a mountain before the whole
world blew up.

Well, that’s the gist of it. Am I going too fast?

At the moment, I am lying on the rocky patch of ground under a tree, trying
to breathe through the gurgling in my lungs as the earth trembles violently
under me. It’s louder than a crashing plane, louder than anything I
can even imagine. Metaphors fail me. I’m pretty sure the world is
about to end any second now.

Something blocks the sun shining in my eyes. Rael. All nine feet of
reptilian humanoid. Despite the scaly, greenish skin and a skull sloped like
the hood of a Volkswagen, he’s got a very beautiful, very human face
which always freaks me out a little. His muscular shoulders and sides are
covered in ugly stumps where Darwin Speer’s scientists did their
grisly work, amputating the graceful tentacles that once adorned his body
like angel wings. One of his hands is missing—he chewed it off to get
free of his chains.

Rael saved my life, but right now I’m pretty sure he wants to end it.
He leans over me, his mouth falling open to reveal sharp white teeth,
electric blue eyes boring into mine, his breath heavy on my neck. I try to
scramble away from him, but a stabbing pain catches me in my ribs. I cry out
as he reaches toward me with his one good hand, and I notice the perfection
of his long, elegant fingers—six of them—thin and pointed like
talons. A low growl escapes his throat—he is more purely animal after
the torture he has endured.

“Stop!”

The finger is almost upon my cheek when it freezes in midair. Jared pushes
the giant arm away, wet hair pale as snow falling into crystal blue eyes. In
some bizarre way, they look alike, these two. The black hoodie of
Jared’s captivity hangs off him in ragged strips, revealing the
puckered skin of healing wounds on his stomach and shoulder.

“Back off.”

Rael, to my surprise, obeys. Jared kneels beside me. “You
okay?”

“My ribs. I can hardly breathe. What’s happening? Was that an
earthquake?”

“The collider blew.”

The collider. The machine in Geneva—Darwin Speer’s Big Bang
machine.

“What does that mean, blew?”

“I saw the explosion.”

“You mean a…nuclear explosion?”

“Yes.”

“So why aren’t we dead?”

“I think most of the blast went underground. Besides, it’s
pretty far away. But that doesn’t mean we’re out of danger. Can
you walk?”

I try to move, but the pain takes my breath away. “Can you…do
anything?”

He takes a slow breath and lays his hands gently against my ribcage.
Lightning flickers under his skin. His hands grow very warm—I gasp at
the burning sensation. He pulls away. I breathe deep.

“Better?”

I take another full breath for good measure. I nod.
“Thanks.”

Bubble Trouble Teaser Tuesday

Bubble Trouble cover

Children’s Book

Date Published: April 6, 2022

photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

This is the story of two adventurous bears, their protective mama,
mischievous bubbles, and a magical witch. Ignoring their mother’s
wishes, Boo and Butter stray down the path toward Granny
Grumblewitch’s house into a world of bubble-brewed danger. Granny
holds their fate in her gnarled hands . . . will they return to the safety
of their cave?

Alejandria Kate wrote Bubble Trouble with the hope that Boo and Butter’s story shows children that truly loving parents mean only what is best for them . . . that any boundaries, warnings or admonishments are intended to protect, not to prevent them from having fun. Any deviation from the defined boundaries could result in unhappy consequences. Parents like Mama Bear know what is best, safest — and love them above and beyond anything else.

Teaser

Butter made a happy growl and clapped his furry paws. I grinned and said, “Mama, bubbles really do bounce. And they giggle, too.”

I’m a Contract Killer Blitz

I'm a Contract Killer cover

The Aberration Series: Book 2

Thriller / Noir

Date Published: 03-07-2022

Publisher: Happy London Press

This is the second book in the Aberrations Series, a collection of ten new, short stories to tease and tickle.

How would you feel if you came face to face with a contract killer? I did, and it formed the basis for my title story .

But then, most, if not all of my yarns have a foundation in something I’ve heard, read or personally experienced.

I’ve kept a diary, for example, but have not had as macabre an experience as the old man in my tale, Dear Diary .

One might wonder, for example, whether, given the chance, the leopard might ever change its spots? Read my take on it and find out for yourself. This story was based on an actual event involving my wife, when she was just six years old. Her mother was so appalled by what happened, she refused to ever speak about it, or hear about it for the rest of her life.

I am not, and have never been a Gigolo, but decided to have our hero from Book 1 meet his comeuppance in Book 2 when he meets a Courtesan, who tumbles his well-kept secret. It’s all there for you to appreciate.

In this second Book in the series, I’ve also looked at taxidermy, car crime and conditions under which an innocent journalist might be tortured and imprisoned in Vietnam? All based on personal experience, or else events I’ve read about in the press which struck me as being worthy of a view to be expressed in a short story .

These are just a few tasters of a collection of tales I hope you’ll enjoy reading as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them.

Andrew Segal

About the Author

Andrew Segal

My inspirations have come from real people, events or situations that have presented themselves. Titles like, I am a Contract Killer, I am a Gigolo, Death Zone, License to Kill, are all based on my own lifetime experiences, questions asked, incidents occurring.

Let me be reassuring, thus-far, nobody has been murdered on my watch. But the notion gave rise to the impetus to write my first murder mystery, The Lyme Regis Murders. Could I make the jump after years of writing macabre short stories to a full length drama? That familiar beating in the gut, said, ‘Yes, try it. Give it a go.’

And so to that cosy coastal town where nothing untoward ever happens. Or perhaps it does. The author seeks to shatter notions, change people’s perceptions, spoil long held views. That was my intention in entering into the world of crime thrillers. I’ve found that ‘nice’ people are not always what they seem. The helpless can be transformed into the most dangerous, the most dangerous become the most harmless. It’s all up to the writer and what they’re hoping to achieve.

For me there have been 10 children’s books, 4 books of short stories and so far, three novels, with a fourth in the mixer.

Whilst a short story might be written with a flurry of adrenalin in the space of a few hours, a book will need more than just a flash of creativity. It will need perseverance, discipline and dogged determination.

But then, isn’t that what is required of every ambition?

May they come out of the shadows

Poetry

DATE PUBLISHED: 14 February, 2022

This collection of poems came as a surprise to me.

When something is easy, brings joy and excitement I do more of it and that is what happened here. Poetry has been a life-long pleasure, but usually as a reader. I have dabbled in writing private pieces before, then these came.

Sometimes, there is a meeting of two people that changes everything.

This book is a result of one of those times. The words coming through on the music of a guitar; the notes and melodies acting as a muse; the song as an anchor to hold onto while playing with the creative force that is available to all of us. It opened a channel for me and the words dropped onto the page. Most times, I felt vulnerable to read them, let alone share them, but here they are for you.

My work in the world has always been the work of the heart and of the soul, connecting people to a deeper truth of themselves. Helping people to remember that they are connected to something wonderful and vast. Opening them up to their inner spiritual power. This book is another vehicle for that intention of my life.

May it remind you of your own heart’s strength.

EXCERPT

Innovate they said

As I stared blankly back

Disrupt the force of you

So, I did.

I took all I knew of me

Into the cauldron

And I stirred.

I bubbled and boiled

For this is no easy process

I found anger and joy

Sadness, longing and lust.

And as I unravelled my knots

My blank stare became glossy

And tears fell unequivocally

And slowly out of the black well of me

Emerged something new.
