Keeping two lovers in sync is hard enough. Three is incredibly complicated.Jaxson, Chase, and Emma may have officially bit off more than they can chew. Already running two wildly successful clubs in Washington D.C., they decide to expand, opening Runway West and Black Light West in luxurious Beverly Hills, California. But there is no relaxing for the infamous threesome. With construction deadlines looming, staffing decisions to make, and multiple outsiders hitting on her men, Emma feels pressured into keeping a dangerous secret from them–breaking the number one rule of their unique relationship.

Can Jaxson, Chase, and Emma’s complicated love survive all that life is throwing at them, or will the pull of outside influences cause it to fall apart forever?

Author’s Note: Complicated Love takes place in the Black Light world and while the characters have appeared in previous books, it can be read as a standalone and complete story.

Emma’s quiet “I’m sorry” was ridiculously inadequate for the hell she’d put the men through. As mad as he was at himself for letting things get so out of control, at that moment, all he could think about was her role in the day’s shitshow.
Jaxson spun around so fast Emma flinched, burying her face against Chase’s shoulder.
“You need to cool down,” Chase cautioned, hugging their girl protectively.
“Whose side are you on? Ten minutes ago you were just as frantic as I was!”
“Since when do we take sides?” Chase snapped.
Fuck. He was right.
Jaxson ran his hand through his hair nervously. “That’s not what I meant and you know it.”
“The only thing I know is she’s shaking like a leaf. We need to go in, sit down, and talk.” Chase hugged Emma harder, speaking softly against her ear. “We were just worried, baby. Let’s go snuggle and you can tell us what’s going on.”
When Emma didn’t start moving towards the living room, Chase bent down and scooped her into his arms. Jaxson watched as Emma wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face against Chase’s shoulder intimately, clearly feeling safe with the switch of their trio.
Watching his lovers comfort each other, for the first time in their almost three-year relationship a hint of jealousy threatened to poison Jaxson’s already precarious thoughts. He pushed it down, knowing intellectually it was ridiculous, but recognizing it as just another sign of how out of whack things had gotten in their complicated relationship.
Still, as he followed behind them irrational anger bubbled through his veins, infecting him as surely as a virus. Months of crushing stress mingled with the day’s events resulting in an almost out-of-body crescendo of emotion he had no idea how to contain — let alone shut down. A quiet voice in his head begged him to storm out and not come back until he was back in control, but the louder fury won the day.
“As much fun as it is to watch you two snuggling, we have a few more important things we need to be doing right now.”
Neither Chase nor Emma answered him. Both staring at him with a healthy dose of fear in their eyes, making him feel like a line had been magically drawn between them. Him on one side, them — together — on the other.
He fucking hated it.
Fine. He was the Dom. It was his job to be the bad guy when the occasion called for it. “Emma, come here.”
Her teary eyes widened. She glanced at Chase, deferring to him for advice. He hesitated, but finally nodded. “Go ahead, baby,” he whispered as he helped her to her feet.
Emma approached him slowly, stopping just out of his reach. She was taking shallow breaths, unable to look at her Dom.
“Eyes,” he ordered. It was an order he’d given her hundreds of times before in the throes of passion or in a D/s scene, yet today it felt different. It was different. Their unshakeable bond had a crack in it, and by God, he was going to figure out why and glue it back together.

Exclusive Excerpt:

This is how my heart breaks

What. The. Fuck.
I had sat down at my desk and opened a manila envelope that was left on top of my stack of mail. It had seemed harmless enough.
But it wasn’t.
I blink my eyes over and over trying to make my brain process what it’s seeing—but I can’t. I can’t unsee the images in the stack of pictures in my hand. Giant glossy eight by tens from different angles so there is absolutely no doubt that my heart is breaking.
And it is broken. It’s not just broken, it’s shattered.
“It’s not what it looks like,” I hear from behind me as he looks over my shoulder and I have to grit my teeth to keep from screaming.
I shuffle the pictures sliding the top one to the back of the stack so that I can see the next one. This one is zoomed in. His head is tipped back and his face is distorted with both lust and passion as she straddles his lap. Her hands hold his to her breasts and I can see the play of tendons flexing through them as he grips them tight. It was only two nights ago that his hands were on my own breasts in much the same way as I rode his cock on the sofa.
“Claire, did you hear me?” he asks but I shuffle the stack again.
In this picture, he has his arms wrapped around her back and he’s pulling her close, her breasts mashed up against his strong chest. Her hands with long, red painted talons press in on either side of his face and as they kiss hungrily, their mouths open as their tongues tangle.
“Goddamnit, Claire! Did you hear me?” My spine turns to steel.
“I did. I’m just choosing to ignore you,” I respond coolly.
“Don’t do this, baby,” he pleads.
“I’m not the one who did anything,” I snap.
“I can explain.” But I’m not interested in listening to him plead a case when he is more than guilty.
“I’m going to need you to leave, Wes.”
“No.”
“This changes everything,” I say so softly even I struggle to hear the words that are coming out of my mouth.
“This changes nothing! Fuck that, Claire,” he yells. “You want to run away. You have always wanted to run away. And here is your fucking reason to served up on a goddamn silver platter.” Everyone around us in the bullpen is doing everything they can to make it appear that they are not listening, not studying the tragic demise of Claire and Wes with rapt attention. But we all know that they are.
“No,” I shout back as I throw the stack of glossy betrayal down on top of my desk. I push my rolly chair back and stand. It slams into the desk behind mine. “You do not get to come in here, where I work, and tell me that I am to blame for your bullshit.”
“Okay,” he says quickly as he holds his hands up in surrender. “You’re right. I’m sorry. I can see you need time.”
“I need a lot of things. One of them is definitely distance.”
“I don’t know if I can give you that. I can’t lose you, baby.” His words burn hot behind my eyes and the last thing I want is for the guys in the bullpen to see me cry.
“You should have thought about that before you fooled around with that stripper.”
“Claire—” he starts but I don’t let him finish.
“You need to go now,” I say softly.
I stand with my feet apart, my hands on my hips, and my head bowed as if I’m waiting for a blow. But I see him clearly even if only in my peripheral. He looks at me and opens his mouth as if he’s going to try to explain again. Something in my stance must have told him it was a losing battle because he snaps his mouth closed before moving towards the exit.
Wes pauses just before opening the door to turn and look back at me, I see him in my peripheral, but I’m looking at his lies and deceit spread across my desk for all to see. He pulls open the door and slams it on his way out. I’m Detective Claire Goodnite and this is how my heart breaks.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Uma snatches the chocolate from the box and darts out the door into the garden. I drop the box and run after her.

She shoves the chocolate in her mouth.

“Cheater!” I narrow my eyes in what I hope is an intimidating glare. “You’re going to pay for this.”

She bolts, trying to get back into the house.

I block her way, towering over her. Uma retreats, turns around, and runs to the other end of the garden. I follow, hot on her heels. She doesn’t shriek, no doubt, so she won’t wake up Sam, whose window is open above us.

For two or three minutes, I chase Uma around the garden in silence. I’m faster, but she’s nimbler. Besides, I’ve no clue how I’m going to make her “pay” for her theft, so I’m not really putting my heart and soul into the pursuit. On our third round, Uma ducks under my arm and hightails it into the house, across the kitchen, and toward the stairs.

She’s hoping to make it to her bedroom and lock herself in.

Not happening.

Accelerating, I close the distance between us. She scrambles up the steps. I grab her shoulders from behind, putting an end to her delusion that she can outrun me. Giggling, she tries to break free. I wrap my arms around her to hold her. She stops thrashing. I pull her into me, tightening my hold. She stops laughing.

For a few moments, neither of us moves or makes a sound, pressed against each other, panting.

Her chest heaves underneath my forearms.

I press them lightly against her little breasts, her nipples…

My heart throbs in my ears.

A caveman’s impulse to sling her over my shoulder and carry her somewhere private where I can have my way with her surges up somewhere in my gut, both shocking and tantalizing me. To resist it, I plant my feet firmly into the step and refuse to move a single muscle in my body.

With Uma one step higher on the staircase, her nape is perniciously close to my face, making my struggle harder than it already is. Her silky black hair is gathered into her usual bun that’s gotten messy from all the running.

I stare at her delicate neck.

Want to kiss it.

Dying to kiss it.

Can’t.

Because… reasons… good reasons… if I could just recall them.

There!

She’s Sam’s nanny.

That’s good, but not good enough…

She’s my friend’s almost fiancée.

Sort of.

Anyway, she’s inexperienced and clearly not thinking straight right now.

Very good.

I relax my embrace enough for her to duck and slip away.

Only she doesn’t do it.

Instead, she leans back into me.

Exclusive Excerpt:

I get to the game early and weave through the rowdy crowd wearing our school colors, black and turquoise. Some guys really go all out for these games and paint their shirtless bodies, spelling out the word P-A-N-T-H-E-R-S on their chests. Others wear costumes or headbands with cat ears. It’s pretty tame compared to our football games. Those are completely overly exaggerated affairs.

I skip the concession stand to grab a few seats away from my regular spot. As much as I’d love to snack on some licorice, and the popcorn smell that floats in the air makes my stomach growl, I’m ready for some answers from Maddox, and I don’t need any distractions.

Trumpets blare. The band starts to play, and the cheerleaders wave their pom-poms as the team lines up to run onto the field. My phone chirps, just as the band breaks into our fight song.

Maddox:

Where are you?

I ignore the cheerleaders’ plea to repeat “time to fight, time to win,” and text him back telling him where to find me.

This is it. My chance to get some answers. Except my hands are shaking, and my knee is bouncing like crazy. While I wait for him, I try to get my nerves under control and check out who showed up for the game near my regular seat. I spot a few people who only come to games occasionally. They don’t even know the rules, they just cheer when everyone else does. Nadia’s here, too, except she’s abandoned her usual pink hoodie for a regular school one that looks like the one I have on. And her normally gorgeous flowing dark hair is wrapped up in a messy bun, like mine. I don’t even have the time to think about what she’s playing at.

I roll my eyes and then immediately jerk back. No. It can’t be. Two rows behind her are piercing green eyes.

Blood drains from my face and redirects to my pounding heart; I have to grip the bench to stay upright. The rest of the crowd seems to disappear, and I’m alone staring at a man dressed all in black. Scared can’t begin to describe this. My breath is ripped from my chest, and I feel like I’m suffocating as I focus on the crescent-shaped scar on his face. Shit. No. He can’t be here. Not real, not real. He’s just my imagination.

But a woman slides past him, stumbles, and catches herself on his shoulder. She smiles apologetically, and he mumbles something back. I’m frozen in fear. Fireworks explode in my chest. Shit, shit, shit. He is real. And he’s really here. I shrink back into the crowd in my row, but I don’t take my eyes off him. He’s always appeared and vanished like a flash, but now he’s sitting here, right next to the space I usually fill. No way it’s a coincidence. He keeps turning his head in every direction, and a thought sinks in my stomach. He’s looking for me. That’s when my fear morphs into something more.

“Don’t you laugh.” Her eyes narrowed to slits, her hands back on her hips.

This woman, she was so angry at him. She was practically vibrating with it. And, God help him, Tristan wanted to laugh. She was fierce and so fucking adorable, glaring up at him like he didn’t have a foot and a half and at least one hundred pounds on her.

“You’re an ass,” Tessa muttered, the sweet curve of her mouth distracting him. He didn’t anticipate her attack. Then it was too late.

With his arm raised, Tristan’s side was exposed and the woman, God bless her, used it to her advantage. She tickled him.

Fucking tickled him.

Tristan swallowed a shout when her tiny fingers dug into his side, his brain torn between yanking away and preventing the slice of cake from falling on her gorgeous head. Though if the tingling in his dick was any indication, he was enjoying her surprise attack way more than he should.

“Jesus,” he wheezed, trying to wiggle away without dropping the cake. “Stop. Stop!”

She did the opposite. As Tristan moved, the infuriating creature found an unprotected stretch on his other side, both of her hands digging into him just above the waist. Tristan was writhing between her tenacious grip and didn’t know what to do first.

He could throw the cake down and easily haul her away, her tenacity no match for his strength.

He could threaten her. He could try to fire her, this scowling, astonishing woman who had no idea she was attacking her temporary boss.

He could laugh. Which, if his body had any say in the matter, was what was about to happen. Which was insane. Because it never happened.

It began as a rattle in the back of his throat, a rumble that felt unfamiliar but not unwelcome.

Tristan’s head tilted back as he gave in to the sensation, his chest expanding, his lungs working overtime as a rusty chuckle broke free. It was rough, scratchy. Not a charming sound. But it didn’t stop. Tristan felt the foreign curve of a real smile on his lips, his mouth opening wider, a burst of laughter sneaking past.

It was loud, unexpected, and startled Tessa enough that she stopped. Her fingers gripped the sides of his shirt, unmoving. She stared up at him in shock.

“Oh my God.” She released him and stepped back, a hand flying up to cover her mouth. “I’m so sorry. Christ!” Her hand shifted to cover her eyes. “I am so, so sorry.”

Tristan caught his breath and placed the abandoned cake on the counter before smoothing his shirt down. He took a small step forward and bent his knees so he was more level with her face.

“I deserved it.”

“No,” she mumbled, eyes still covered.

“Yes. It was an interesting strategy, I’ll give you that. But a tactical success all the same.”

Tessa relaxed her fingers just enough so she could peek through the gap. “Really?”

“Really,” Tristan confirmed. “I’ll definitely think twice before stealing your food again.”
