Writing yourself whole

I want you to be everything that’s you, deep at the center of your being.

– Confucius

Writing is an alchemical process that turns pieces into wholeness. Whenever I feel like my life is falling apart, writing becomes my sanctuary. It is my sacred place to hide and rest. A place to centre and feel whole again. In this space, everything slowly returns to its natural rhythm so I can return to stillness and fullness. The writing process allows me to keep my attention on the present moment and stay with my thoughts and feelings.

When we think we are not enough and need anything or anyone to fulfill us, we suffer. When we believe that other people or things promise us wholeness, we suffer. Writing can teach us that we are not lacking anything or anyone. It can teach us freedom, honesty, and compassion, clarity and perseverance, trust and openness. It can teach us wholeness. All that is required is to trust the process, and most importantly, to start.

***

Write about what you need in order to feel whole right now. You don’t have to be realistic. You are not writing a plan. You are writing to find out what’s true for your heart in this moment. It’s a safe discovery journey, and no action is needed. Of course, you can, and probably will, act on what you learn, but for now, the focus is on the discovery itself. What do you feel is missing in your life? Who or what do you believe would make you feel whole? You can start with, “In order for me to feel whole right now, I need …” and continue for seven minutes. No stopping. The rules are simple: don’t stop, reread, or rewrite for seven minutes.

About The Author

Natalya Androsova, PhD

Natalya is an award-winning writing and dissertation coach with over two decades of experience teaching writing. She has coached professional writers and university writers of all skill levels–students, staff, and faculty. Natalya currently runs Writing and Graduate Student Support at Ryerson University in Toronto, where she also teaches Writing for Wellness to staff and faculty and acts as a dissertation coach for graduate students.

Her passion is helping writers become more courageous, authentic, and kind to themselves. Through individual coaching, writing groups, and writing retreats, she has helped hundreds of writers to break through blocks and find inspiration, a more authentic voice, and a greater freedom in their writing and their life. Her doctoral research also focused on the intricacies of the writing process, exploring the relationship among the poetic, the feminine, and the sacred.

She lives in Toronto, Canada, and when she is not writing or meditating, she loves to play tennis, practice yoga, or sit by the water and cloud watch for hours. In her own writing practice, spanning three decades, she discovered that beliefs we have about our writing are not different from the beliefs we have about ourselves, so a new way of writing often translates into a new way of living. What was impossible becomes probable and even likely when we learn to write and live without fear.

EXCERPT

What is intermittent fasting? Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of short-term fasting and eating. There are multiple intermittent fasting diet plans circulating. All of them dictate when you should eat rather than what specific foods you should eat. One popular version, called the 16:8 method, means you fast for 16 hours every day and eat during your chosen 8 hour eating window. You repeat this pattern of eating every day. However, for long-term health benefits, it is highly recommended that you don’t ignore the “what to eat” part of this eating regimen. As a nutritionist, it is suggested that you combine a plant-based, Mediterranean style of eating with your intermittent fasting plan of choice.

Why try it? New research studies have shown that this way of eating may offer numerous health benefits such as weight loss, fat loss (especially belly fat), metabolism boosting, disease prevention, and increased longevity. Furthermore, advocates claim that an intermittent fasting program is much easier to maintain than traditional, highly restrictive, calorie-controlled diets.
