EXCERPT

“Your mother must be going crazy,” she muttered, glancing at the door she wouldn’t be using anytime soon.

I’m sorry, Mama, he silently apologized, because he was about to use her absence from his life to his advantage. “If she were here, she would be inconsolable.” The trace of sadness he’d allowed her to hear in his tone did wonders.

“Fuuuck,” his soft-hearted female whispered, looking away. After a moment, she balled her fists up and pressed them into the mattress. “She wouldn’t happen to be out of town, would she?”

“No.” He didn’t have to work at sounding anything but heartbroken when he admitted, “She was taken from us seven years ago by an illness we couldn’t buy a cure for.”

“Double fuck.” Dale’s head fell forward and hung off her neck like a heavy weight. Her nape was mouthwatering. “Do you miss her? Or was she the type you wouldn’t miss?”

Her questions were muffled and quiet, but he heard and answered honestly. “I miss her physical presence in my life every day. But she’s still with me. Or so I like to think.”

She nodded and threw her head back. His chest constricted in a sharp snap when he saw tears shimmering in her eyes. “Super. I’m stuck lusting after a mobster with a fucking conscience. Perfect. Anything else you wanna throw at me? Do you have dogs? Because a dog lover would have me out of this dress lickety-split.” She spun away and slid over to sit on the far corner of the bed. The mattress shook along with her bobbing leg, and little snaps sounded as she cracked each of her knuckles by pressing down on them with her thumbs.

Lukas felt the strangest urge to grin as he fell deeper under her spell. But he also felt a sickness in his gut because he was upsetting her. Those tears. Since when did a woman’s tears affect him? He’d seen too many of them during his time as a serial monogamist. Typically, they were inconvenient and annoying, and he found it too easy to walk away from them.

Not tonight.

Dale’s sniffle had him looking up from her fragile shoulder blades to meet her eyes in the reflection of the mirror above the dresser. He held them as he slipped his holster off and hung his gun over the shoulder of his suit jacket. If her surreptitious glances were any indication, the sight of it on his person was upsetting her.

“I think it would be best if you just took me home.”

He slowly shook his head.

“If I have sex with you first, will you take me home after?”

He couldn’t stop his grin at that hopeful tone. “Once we have sex, you’ll be home.”

Her mouth compressed as fire snapped and crackled in her eyes. She wanted it as badly as he did, but there was something else going on in her head. He could see the battle in the back of her eyes.

“How can you say that? This isn’t the dark ages. You don’t even know me, Lukas.”

He shrugged as he undid the buttons at his wrists and rolled up his sleeves. “I know enough to have made my final decision. Once I do that, there’s no going back.”

She came around to face him. “Seriously?” She laughed. “So, I have no choice here? You like me, and I just have to live with that?”

His gaze skimmed her body. He couldn’t look into her eyes anymore without giving away how far beyond “like” this was. He owned her. Or, rather, she owned him. “This is about something bigger than liking you, Magdalena. I need you. I want you. So, yes, that means your choices are…limited.” Nonexistent.

“How can you need me?”

He tipped his head to the side. “Not going to ask how I can want you?”

“No. That I understand.”

“Because you want me.”

“Yes.”

Win. “And you wouldn’t refuse me if I initiated sex right now.” He bounced his cufflinks in his palm and waited to have his ego stroked.

Those brilliant emeralds took a leisurely trip down his form to top off his hard-on. “No. I wouldn’t. But all this talk about fate and powers that be isn’t happening. If you’re looking for some sort of long-lasting, meaningful relationship, you picked the wrong girl.”

Her honesty was doing nothing more than adding a lubricant that greased his descent so that he fell deeper and faster than ever. “Why is that?”

“Because I don’t do people. They’re just not worth the trouble.”

The lonely words pierced his heart. “I will be,” he promised her, vowing to make it so.

“Doubt it.”

“Don’t.”

“Can’t help it.”

Her expression had darkened, and he could see she was starting to close up, so he pointed his thumb at the door in the corner. “Why don’t you freshen up and I’ll take you out back to see the dogs.”

Her mouth opened to deliver another quick retort, but nothing came out. She stared up at him for a few beats before ducking her head. He had to take a step forward so he wouldn’t miss the reluctant smile that curved her lips. When she tipped her chin up just enough to look at him, her dimple made an appearance. “You really want me out of this dress, huh?” she said quietly. There was a new softness surrounding her that almost sent him to his knees. A natural seductress. Who he would likely have to kill for again because her allure was undeniable, and men were going to respond to it in the coming years. No matter. He would do whatever had to be done to protect his greatest asset.

SYNOPSIS:

After years of solitude, Tish O’Malley made the mistake of assuming happiness was finally hers. But before she can relax her guard and enjoy her protective—albeit secretive—Sergeant at Arms, another selfish choice made by her unconscionable drug-addict mother brings about deadly consequences. With Rachel conveniently tucked away behind bars, her massive debt is laid at Tish’s feet.

Josh “The Guardian” Sylvan knew when he claimed his young queen, her well-being would become his life’s purpose. When her mother’s senseless idiocy brings his estranged father’s notorious club to town, to protect Tish, Josh must consider taking out a member of the Obsidian Devils MC. Can he risk it all? EXCERPT – BLIND FAITH

Josh stared at the woman before him. If ever there was any doubt he’d hooked up with someone too young, the look in Tish’s eyes at that moment cured him of it. She hadn’t been hanging out here, shitting her panties over her makeup being broken or her clothes being dirty because a bad man had touched them. She’d been trying to figure out the next logical step; medical care for whoever needed it—she’d thought that might be him and her concern was beautiful—a surface or deep clean to get the house in shape again, a possible insurance claim.

He lifted a finger, and, ignoring his body as it burned as hot for her as his heart, he explained a couple of things. “One. The next time you wanna yell at me, you keep that shit under wraps until we’re alone. You understand?”

She glanced around and only then seemed to notice the volume of voices out in the kitchen had gone real low. She looked properly horrified, so he went on.

“Two. I will not call in a report to you. Not ever. But if you want to send a text next time to make sure your old man isn’t dead, feel free. I’ll happily answer it.”

“Three. I’m sorry. I was totally blowing you off, and I get how insulting that is. Forgive me.”

She went to move toward him, but he held up his spread fingers.

“Four.” He leaned his upper body into her, close enough that the sweetness of vanilla trailed under his nostrils. “I am your big bad man, and I have every fucking right to put you on that shelf. Only, in my head, it’s a pedestal, and I’ll jam you up there and keep every fucking secret in the world from you if I think it will make your life better. Why? Because I want you happy more than I want you informed. You’re gonna have to get used to that because it’s not gonna change no matter how much you bitch and moan about it. Got it? Tish?”

She nodded, her mouth tight.

“And, five, where the fuck did you see a dead body?”

“When we were in Phoenix, my mom once made a buy off a dealer who lived under a bridge. As she sampled the shit, then exchanged drugs for money, I stared at a naked woman lying spread-eagled on a dirty mattress in the corner. Her eyes stared back, and I made a game of waiting to see how long it would be before her chest moved. My mom dragged me away before it could, so I guess the woman won.”

Josh’s soul crumpled and wept as it did every time she casually shared one of her stories. He slid his fingers into her hair and tipped her head back with his thumbs under her jaw. “I’m sorry, Tish-Tosh,” he whispered. “You don’t know how badly I want to give you a new past.”

Her entire face compressed. “I’m angry with you, Josh. You’re not supposed to say stuff like that.”

“Sorry, babe. I’m trying here.” He brought their mouths together and apologized with a slow kiss that turned into something more the second she got her hands under his shirt. The heat from her palms was a tease, but he could have handled that. The scrape of her fingernails as she focused on a spot above his belt buckle, no. She wanted in his pants. And he wanted to give her what she wanted.

A loud bang killed the mood.

“Food’s ready!”

Holding Tish to him, he leaned over and threw the door open. Chase stood there with his hand over his eyes, but his fingers were separated. The cacophony going on behind him was once again at full level. He gave them the once over then looked at the clothes littered all over the floor.

“You’ll have to learn to multi-task, Tish. Least you could have done while showing off your brass balls is wash your uncle’s jeans.”

He walked off laughing.

“Fuckin’ idiot,” Josh muttered as he took Tish’s hand and brought it to his cock. Her quiet gasp was the sweetest thing. “Squeeze me.”

She gripped him, and contracted her hand, making it an experience when she did it with little pulses that unknowingly mimicked a coming pussy. Pride showed in her smile when he groaned.

“You want that?”

“Yes, even though I’m still sort of mad, I’d take you.”

“I’ll give it to you after church. If we can get away with it, we’re spending the day in bed tomorrow.”

She looked excited and skeptical all at once. “In my uncle’s house?”

He nodded and looked at the empty doorway, smirking. “Yeah. And I’m gonna make you scream the fuckin’ place down. Twenty bucks says he and Chase stay away for the duration. We’ll toss our dirty sheets on top of all this shit,” he added, thinking that might be a nice touch.

Tish’s cheeks flamed, and she was still laughing as she pulled him out of the house. She led him around a table loaded down with empanadas, grilled steaks, ribs and burgers, and his favorite; Mesquite-smoked, bacon-wrapped Sonoran dogs. He held their plates while Tish filled them, and didn’t miss how the discreet looks from Beth and Fiona turned into relieved smiles when they saw Tish happy. Because they knew her story, they all wanted her in a good place.

Lucky for him, he was the chosen one who would get her there.

EXCERPT – BLIND FAITH

Without any other options, Elaine hesitantly handed Harry over then darted toward the restrooms. Tish looked down at the sleeping baby and, of course, she smiled like a loon because his nose was a tiny button and his eyelashes were gorgeous. As she slowly made her way back to Josh, she adjusted Harry’s blanket where it had slipped, and pulled his paci from dangling over her hand. It was clipped on, but she wanted it handy.

“Sorry,” she murmured as she slid back into the booth. “I couldn’t leave her hanging. That was Ben’s wife; the guy whose notes I borrowed earlier.” Her voice, which wasn’t Harry’s mother’s, coaxed him into opening his sleepy brown eyes. “Hi, sweet pea,” she cooed. “Mommy just had to go take care of some business. She’ll be back soon, and then you can go with her to my school and listen while she rags on your daddy for not answering her calls.” His eyes rolled, and he went back under, totally uninterested. She laughed, as enamored now as she’d been when she’d first met him when he was only a few days old.

“I’ll get on my goddamn hands and knees and beg if you want me to, Tish, but, please, have mercy on me and let me fuck a baby into you.”

A bolt of something delicious exploded between her legs as her head snapped up. Josh was staring at her with honest-to-goodness moisture swimming in his eyes.

“Oh…my…God.”

Hearing the shocked whisper, Tish was sure she felt something in her neck crack from how fast her head then whipped to the side. Elaine stood next to their table, her jaw hanging, her eyes like saucers as she gaped at Josh.

Tish laughed nervously. “You all set? You look great. Can’t even tell you were crying.”

Elaine gave no indication she’d heard her.

“He, uh, he’s a little intense.” Tish reached out and patted her friend’s hand. “It’s okay, though. He’s harmless.”

With her face turning fire engine red, Elaine twittered like she should have a fan fluttering over her face. “’Kay. Er, wow. I sure wish Ben had said something like that to me before we got pregnant. All I got was a worried ‘I think we can make it work if we really scrimp and save.”

Tish giggled because she could so hear Ben saying that.

“He’s very sexy,” Elaine added under her breath, speaking to Tish as though Josh wasn’t within perfect hearing distance. She was staring right at him! “In a scary, sort of wicked way.” She cleared her throat and seemed to snap out of a trance. Her hand came out to touch Harry’s belly. “Got a baby with mine, though,” she said as though reminding herself. Her next high-pitched laugh was embarrassed. “I’ll, um, be as quick as I can, Tish.” She bumped her hip into a table as she rushed down the narrow aisle and out the door.

Grinning, Tish watched out the window to make sure Elaine made it across the street and into the insurance broker’s office building without being hit by a bus.

“Told you women love you,” she teased as her lower belly continued to flutter. “I guess now you know how the proud lion feels being gawked at in the zoo.”

“I wasn’t kidding, babe. Are you on the pill?”

It was her turn to gape. “Shh! Josh!” She glanced around. “I’m not coming in public with you again if you don’t find an inside voice.”

“I haven’t made you come in public yet. Are you?” he pressed.

She shivered. “Yes.” She hadn’t taken today’s yet but would as soon as they got home. With how often he’d come inside her last night—she shivered again—now probably wasn’t the time to get sloppy.

Probably?

The knowledge that one of her eggs could be caught and mauled by one of Josh’s sperm should alarm her, but it fucking didn’t! Why? That possibility would have freaked her out only twenty-four hours ago. But now? Nothing.

“Toss them.”

Okay.

She hid a cringe and wanted to kick that excited inner voice for wanting to obey his every command. “I think I’m going to tickle Harry’s feet to wake him. When he starts bawling, I’ll hand him over and go sit outside. Then we’ll see how keen you are on the idea of impregnating me.”

He groaned. Loud enough to make people turn and look. “When you’re in front of me, I love that fuckin’ word. Seriously. You think I’m a pig now, wait until you have a round belly and those beautiful tits get heavy.” He groaned again and lowered his voice. “Everyone who sees you will know how deep you let me into you. They’ll know who owns you and the baby you carry. Pregnant women are horny women, right?”

To her surprise, he slid out of the booth, his face drawn, shoulders tight, and left her sitting alone with the baby. Again, she found herself looking out the window after the bell above the door jangled. He hopped down the stairs and stalked around the corner of the building. Man, his body was gorgeous.

Feeling feverish, she absently stroked her thumb down Harry’s velvety cheek. “I think Uncle Josh is riding the crazy train, Harrison.” As something deep between her legs clenched with need, she added, “And I’m afraid Auntie Tish is thinking about hitching a ride on the caboose.”

“Up, Yasmeen.”

That’s what she thought. She shoved her arms in the air, and he pulled the soft cotton over her head. She looked down at the logo across her chest. “You went to Princeton?”

“I went to Princeton. I also spent some time at Oxford.”

“In England?”

“Is there another?”

“Not that could handle that attitude, no.” He gave her a warning look that she took head on. “Don’t look at me like that. Your arrogance is astounding. The girls must have followed you around with their panties in the air.”

“As I am sure the boys at NYU followed behind you holding their dicks in their hands.”

She grimaced. “No, they didn’t.”

“Yes, my pet. They did. Believe me. If you did not witness it, they were being discreet. I would guarantee hundreds of men have come on their shower walls to thoughts of you on your knees before them.”

“Lucian. Don’t be disgusting.”

He gave her an exasperated look. “That is not disgusting. If I were to see you masturbate, I would be enthralled.”

“Yes, but that’s someone you’re attracted to. I’d be all eyes if I watched you, too. But to think of other men doing it makes me a little vomity.”

“For masturbating to a mental image of you.”

She tipped her head and nodded as if it was dense of him to confirm.

“You are a strikingly beautiful woman. You must know men wonder what it must be like to fuck you the minute they see you. When I saw you for the first time, I was staggered by your beauty. I have never experienced the sensation of having my breath taken. You accomplished that without batting an eye.”

She couldn’t deny hearing she hadn’t been the only one affected like that made her feel great. But looks were looks, and they’d eventually go. “So your first thought was to have sex with me?”

A shadow passed over his features. “No. My first thought was to do what I have now done.”

“Have sex with me.”

“Steal you.”

Her eyes flared. “You thought to steal me? That night?”

“I fought myself throughout our meal. By the time you got up to use the restroom, I’d considered a variety of ways I could imprison you, right down to purchasing a small island and allowing you to roam freely but with no actual way of escape.”

He bent and kissed her throat before nudging her toward the sitting area. “Sit.”

She slowly walked over, trying to get her head around the fact that he’d wanted to do this to her two years ago. That meant Markus’s murder hadn’t created her crazy man, it had just prodded him out into the open. When she reached the loveseat and turned to sit, he was gone.

“Would you like to put something on your feet?”

She looked down at her bare toes and shook her head. What if he left without her?

“I laid out a nightgown in your closet. Go get the slippers I put with it. If fact, change into the gown, too. I will wait for you.”

She bit her lip and looked at the door to their room, then behind her at the shadowy corridor. “Promise?”

“Yes, draga. I promise not to leave you on your own when you are so ill at ease. I am not that cruel.”

“’Kay.” She went back and didn’t even blink at the beautiful ivory silk creation she threw on after taking off her clothes. It was sheer, layered, and the cuffs and hemline were trimmed with the softest fur. She’d have felt like a cross between Mrs. Howell and Santa’s escort if she wasn’t suddenly wearing a cloud made by angels. She paused at the sight of her reflection when she turned to slide her feet into the prettiest matching ballet slippers. Wow. Her mobster might be nuts, but he had superb taste.

“I do not want you in anything but the gown and slippers, Yasmeen.”

As Lucian’s voice drifted to her, she had to wonder if he’d want her at all if she gained twenty pounds, got a scar or two, and cut her hair to her chin.

Swiftly stepping out of her panties, she laid them out with the bra she’d already taken off and donned the slippers. When she walked out, she felt like a naked ghost.

Lucian’s chest rose swiftly when she rushed across the room towards him, layers of silk billowing behind her. She smoothed her hair down because she suddenly felt self-conscious.

“Ready.”

He stopped her from darting past him into the hallway with an arm around her waist. Allowing the momentum to turn him into her, he backed her into the open door and pressed his body along the length of hers.

“Mesmerizing,” he breathed as he stroked from her hips up to her breasts with complete and total ownership. He rolled her nipples, passed over them a few times with his thumbs, then took his touch away once they were peaked and ready for more. “I want to have a structure built deep in the woods.” His hands came to rest on the sides of her neck, his fingertips pressing into the base of her skull. “Preferably underground so no one will ever find it. I would have them construct only one entrance, and I would have the only access code. Close your eyes.”

She held onto him with a grip on the sides of his sweater. She closed her eyes.

He kissed each one, lingering. “Do you know what I would keep in that solitary, impenetrable fortress, draga?”

“Your valuables?” she guessed as she gave up and went under the hem to get at his skin.

“Yes. But only one.”

“Oh. Uh, your money?”

“You.”

Her eyes flew open. “Me?” she squeaked.

“I would lock you away and never let another soul anywhere near you. My face would be the only one you would ever again see. My voice would be the only one you would hear. My touch would be the last you would ever feel. And you would feel so much of it. You would exist for me. When I made time to visit, you would celebrate my very presence. Can you imagine a life like that, my pet?”

Ice flowed through her veins. “You would return to that fortress and find a corpse. Because if you ever made me live like that, I would kill myself.”

His fingers tightened until her head started to ache. “I would hunt you down in the afterlife if you did that to me. You would pay dearly.” He was looking down at her, but with a vacancy in his stare that told her he wasn’t really with her.

“Lucian?” She grabbed his wrists. “You’re hurting me.”

“You are hurting me.”

She couldn’t have been more shocked if he’d hit her. “What? How? Lucian, I’m here for you.” She brought her hands to his cheeks and stood on her toes so she could press her lips to his. His mouth was cold. “I want to help you.” The pressure he was exerting faded until he was simply holding her head again.

He tsked as he shook his head. “I want to climb inside you and stay there until you can’t survive without me. I want to f*ck your body. I want to f*ck your mind into an addiction you’ll never get over. I want you to crave my touch, my voice, the scent of my skin, the feel of my mouth on you, the sensation of my c*ck filling you, my tongue cleaning you afterward. I want you to need what I give you. I want it so you struggle to breathe when I am not within your sights. When you can no longer smell me, I want you to whimper with a desperation that matches what I am experiencing. I want this perfect, flawless treasure you are to be dependent on me for your very life.”

His forehead was resting on hers now and she’d long ago stopped breathing. Something in the very fabric of her existence understood those needs while the rational part of her found them repugnant. Excitement, terror, and a dark, writhing lust was crackling under her skin, heating her from the inside out.

He blinked and drew in a sudden lungful of air as if he’d just come out of a trance. He straightened and slid his hands down to her shoulders before placing a chaste kiss to her lips. “Do not worry, Yasmeen. I will send you home before I allow my demons to do those things to you. I know you deserve better. Now, come. You can sit by the fire while I attempt to work for an hour.”

As though he hadn’t just revealed how much further he’d fallen, he took her hand and led her out of the room. Unable to process what this could mean for her, she didn’t bother. She simply followed along and vowed to try harder. She had to get through to him. He had to see she was more than a possession. But more importantly, she had to convince him to send those demons he spoke of so fondly on their merry way. If he allowed them to take over completely, they were both finished.
