SYNOPSIS

Jeni Acerna’s longstanding friends-with-benefits relationship with her bestie, Brian Hamilton, has been both blissful and troublesome. Unable to commit to any other relationship, she compares everyone to Brian in or out of bed. She has been in lust (and love) with him for years. Fear of losing him has prevented her from confronting him with her feelings.

After several months of not seeing each other, Jeni and Brian meet in Cleveland for a friend’s wedding. Their weekend getaway, however, is anything but normal. A five hundred dollar bet. A tryst in a garden. Their passion picks up where it left off – hot and heavy. However, this time Brian wants more than Jeni just in his bed. Can he can convince her to take the risk?

EXCLUSIVE REAL EXCERPT

Jeni walked down the terminal corridor and ducked into the closest restroom. She peered at herself in the mirror and ran her fingers through her long, chestnut hair, letting it fall over her shoulders. She pulled out her lip gloss from the side pocket of her brown shoulder bag and spread it over her lips.

There!

She smiled. Now, she didn’t look liked she’d been crammed into a plane seat for over two hours, shifting about trying to find a comfortable position. She never minded travel, in fact, she rather enjoyed it, but the excitement at seeing Brian had made her restless.

She headed for the escalator that would take her to the baggage claim area, where Brian would meet her. Her heart raced a bit as the organ always did when it had been a while since she’d seen him. She could never really explain why the jitters overtook her. They had known each other for eternity, but the butterflies fluttered in her stomach anyway.

As she stepped on the escalator, she saw him standing at the bottom, waiting. His lopsided smile spread across his lips when he noticed her. His Ohio State baseball cap was pulled low, just how she loved it, and his dark brown curls wisped out from underneath. A black T-shirt clung to his torso, showing off the lean muscle tone of his arms and chest. Light blue jeans slung low on his hips. His chocolate eyes sparkled as he looked up her descent.

Several people stood between Jeni and Brian on the escalator, but she didn’t care. She hustled down the moving stairs, slinging her large duffel bag over her shoulder. When she reached the bottom step, she tossed her bag to the side and threw her arms around his neck. He picked her up and swung her around. Bystanders probably thought they were lovers who hadn’t seen each other in a while.

Well, in some ways, that was an accurate assessment.

Jeni buried her face in his neck. He smelled refreshing and familiar. Fresh mint with a hint of sandalwood and something just him. God, she loved his scent. Made her feel at home.

“I never realize how much I miss you until I see you again.” His words brushed past her ear and sent shivers through her.

“I know what you mean.” Pulling back from her nestled spot on his neck, her gaze landed on his. Warm eyes, twinkling with mischief. His smile remained. “You look great!” She kissed his cheek.

“As do you.” He placed a gentle kiss on her lips. His mouth was soft and moved over hers lightly. He slid his tongue over the seam of her lips, and Jeni moaned, unable to stop the sound from escaping her. His smile stretched against her lips. He thought that sound meant she’d fold. Uh-uh!

She pulled back from the kiss and grinned at him. If she let that kiss go any further, he would be correct, and they would barely make it back to his car. She shook her head and smirked. He twisted his lips in disappointment, but his chocolate eyes danced with the challenge. Then he grabbed her bag and her hand and walked out of the airport towards his car.

EXCERPT

The whir of a vehicle engine and the squeal of tires pulling into his driveway caught his attention. Gracelyn’s Jeep Cherokee slammed to a halt. She pushed the door open, banged it shut, and marched up the driveway in her black, heeled boots.

“How dare you,” she spewed, strutting in his direction.

Her hips swayed in a tantalizing rhythm, mesmerizing him. He shook his head, trying to gather himself. Her long, chestnut waves flowed over her shoulders. Her blue eyes sparkled with fierceness and determination. For what, he didn’t know, but she looked gorgeous. The exhaustion that had consumed him a minute ago washed away with a new wave of sexual energy. Heat spread through him and settled in his groin, thickening his dick. Something about her had him hornier than a teenager whenever she was within view, even if she looked like she might knee him in the balls.

She’d definitely be the death of him.

“How could you embarrass me like that?” She halted just inside the garage, her hands on her hips, and her chin tilted up in defiance.

“Well, good evening to you, too.” The sarcasm in his voice was light, but she raised a brow as if surprised that he’d be anything but chagrin. “I thought we already hashed this out at the pub.” Matt grabbed the hem of his t-shirt and lifted it to wipe the sweat from his face. Her gaze dropped to his exposed torso, and her expression shifted from anger to desire, if even just for a second. If he hadn’t been watching her closely, he might have missed it.

“Don’t get smart with me.” She raked her gaze back up his body. When she reached his face, he smirked. She lowered her brows and glowered. “As the evening went on, I had to field questions about your behavior. Those are my co-workers, my friends. Acting like a jealous boyfriend was immature and thoughtless. For someone who wants our situation to be nonexistent, you’ve opened a can of worms. The rumors have officially started.”

“I apologized, Gracey.” He dropped the fabric in his hands, and the bottom half of his shirt covered his abs. “I’ve struggled to deal with our situation. Seeing Jeremy with his arm around you did make me flip out like a jealous boyfriend. I freaked out. My behavior was irrational. I admit it. I don’t tend to think rationally where you’re concerned, so I don’t know what else you want me to say.”

She twisted strands of hair around her index finger and glanced down at the floor. Her anger dissipated for a split second, and she looked vulnerable, exposed, and his heart tightened at the sight. He wanted to wrap his arms around her and shelter her from all the things that made her anything but happy. Unfortunately, that likely included him these days.

“It will only be a matter of time before your mom hears about this.” She glanced back up at him. Her hair still tangled around her finger. “Roberta was apparently watching us closely. She asked me what your scene was about. You know she walks with your mom on Monday evenings. Now what?”

Roberta was a good friend of his mother’s and a bit of a nibby-nose. She’d have no problem mentioning his outburst at the pub to his mom, but he wasn’t overly concerned about it. That surprised him. All this time, he’d believed he couldn’t be in a relationship with Gracelyn because of his mother’s reaction, but as he stood here in front of this woman he adored, he wanted the world to know.

A palpable energy emanated from her. The area between them zinged with her anger, but also with something more. Need. Lust.

“Is this why you’re here?” He stepped in her direction, closing the space between them. “Did you come here to scold me? To tell me to grow up? To question how I feel about you?” He gripped her by the shoulders and pressed her against the side of his truck. She gasped, eyes wide. She tensed under his hold. Her sweet, strawberry scent enveloped him, making him lightheaded. His mouth watered to kiss her, to taste her. “Or did you come here with the hope that I would slam you against my truck, hike up your sexy dress, and sink deep inside you with my now-hard cock?”

She inhaled sharply at his words, but her muscles relaxed as if submitting to what was about to happen.

Matt lowered his mouth roughly on hers. He molded his lips to hers, eating at her mouth with the hunger of a starved man. She didn’t respond immediately, but she softened her lips, and he thrust his tongue between them, exploring and tasting her. He weaved a hand into her tresses and cupped the back of her head, holding her still so he could take her mouth the way he wanted. Hot and heavy.

EXCERPT

The epiphany that had smacked Gracelyn on the forehead last night while sipping her wine and listening to Coldplay was what had brought her to the station this morning. Matt couldn’t just ignore her. They’d been through too much and had known each other for too long. He didn’t get to play decision-maker on this because how they handled the situation affected her, too. They were adults. It was about damn time they acted like grownups.

She inhaled a deep breath of crisp autumn air as she approached the entrance to the station house. Even though she’d convinced herself that this needed to be done, it didn’t make coming here any easier.

She heard the laughter of the guys from inside, and she smiled. This firehouse had its fill of shenanigans. The team had struggled greatly with the loss of Chad, so it was nice to hear the joviality behind the door. She used to stop in regularly during Chad’s shifts, but since his death, she’d only swung by a couple of times to drop things off. The building held many memories, too many. Facing them and the guys who had been like brothers to her husband had seemed like too much. Until now.

She knocked on the door, then twisted the handle and stuck her head around the corner. The smell of sausage, eggs, onions, and peppers assaulted her. Someone was cooking a hearty breakfast for the crew.

Four men stood in the kitchen. All eyes turned in her direction.

Matt leaned against the far countertop, holding a cup of coffee, his smile fading at the sight of her. He pursed his lips and tensed his jaw when his gaze met hers. Her skin tingled from his penetrating stare.

“Gracelyn,” Drew Anderson said with a smile. His voice broke the silence she’d dropped on the group.

Drew stood at the gas stove, flipping what appeared to be sausage patties. He’d been with the department for over ten years and had been one of Chad’s closest buddies. They’d played softball together and cards on some nights. As diehard Cleveland Browns fans, they’d commiserated every football season. He’d been a big part of Gracelyn’s and Matt’s support system after Chad’s death. For several months afterwards, he and his wife, Stacey, cooked meals and stopped by the house to visit, despite how hard Chad’s passing had been on Drew, as well.

“Come on in.” Drew waved her in with the spatula.

She stepped through the door and into the lounge area in front of the kitchen. On one side, a long, wooden table stretched with chairs haphazardly pushed in under it. Paper plates, napkins, and silverware sat in piles atop the table, waiting for the breakfast sizzling in the pans.

“Hey, Drew. Tim.” She nodded her head in Tim O’Leary’s direction before closing the door behind her.

“What brings you here on a Monday morning?” Tim asked. The toaster popped, and Tim plucked out two pieces of toast and set them on a plate.

“I need to see Matt.” She’d chosen her words carefully. If she’d said “wanted” instead of “needed” she feared Matt would find a way around it. Despite their current situation, he would never deny her what she needed.

“Lucky bastard,” the unfamiliar blond guy said. He must have been one of the new recruits or candidates, as they were often called. He was young, probably in his mid-twenties, with shaggy blond hair, blue eyes, and the hard body of someone who worked out daily. He’d fit in quite well with the crew at the Mason Ridge Fire Department.

“That’s his sister-in-law, you asshat.” Tim slapped the guy on the head. “Gracelyn, this is our new candidate, Kevin Thompson. He’s training with us. Maybe he’ll even get to stay if we can housebreak him and teach him some manners.”

Drew chuckled. Matt’s tense face even cracked with a smile at Tim’s comment. When an emergency broke, these men were serious and organized. However, during their downtime, horseplay and hazing ran rampant. Giving the candidates a hard time was a favorite pastime of the veterans. Appeared to be Kevin’s turn at the roasting spit.

“Hi, Kevin.” She walked over to him and held out her hand. “Nice to meet you.”

“The pleasure is all mine.” He grasped her outstretched hand and brought it to his lips, pressing a slight kiss to her fingers. “All mine.” He winked at her. His gaze roamed over her slowly while he kept her hand in his. A flush washed over her at being so intimately perused in front of the men that had considered her husband their brother. “It’s good to know you’re single.”

“Let her go,” Matt barked, setting his cup down hard on the counter. All eyes turned to him. He flexed his hands at his sides. A flush crept from his neck to his cheeks. He glared at the back of Kevin’s head before meeting Gracelyn’s gaze. Something flashed behind his eyes. Jealousy? Whatever it was, she’d never seen the emotion on his face in the past.

Kevin dropped Gracelyn’s hand. Then Tim popped him on the side of the head again. Everyone but Matt puffed out a laugh.
