EXCERPT

Each word, each action I took might disappoint or please my supporters or hinder future opportunities for others who will undoubtedly come after me. There seemed to be both a conscious and unconscious, constant monitoring of everything that I said and did, and how I presented myself by others, and by myself.

The pressure of leading in this season was formidable.

About the Author

Jen Pestikas

Jen Pestikas is a type-A super achiever. She always got straight A’s
and was devastated if a B showed up on her report card(s). Jen set the bar
high and strove to check all the boxes in what defined a successful life.
Her super achieving nature shaped her career in the corporate world.

After twenty years in corporate, climbing the ladder in financial services
from a bank teller to a Senior Vice President in a Chicago land financial
institution and doing ‘all the right things’, Jen’s health
plummeted. In 2019, her thrusters burnt out, her body stopped functioning,
and emotionally, she was a shell of her former self with no passion nor
direction.

Jen’s time of healing that followed was an arduous journey and a
gift. A gift she had to give herself, her husband, children, and her life.
She was forced to acknowledge that lives weren’t perfect. She did not
have to check all life’s success boxes, and she did not have to be
super woman. For the first time, Jen finally understood what she wanted. Jen
knew she wanted to give back to women so they could avoid the traps of
overachieving, perfectionism, and not speaking their truth.

Jen has a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Lake Forest Graduate
School of Management, a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from Indiana University and is
coaching certified from the Institute for Professional Excellence in
Coaching (iPEC).

Jen has developed the Brave Women at Work brand, hosts the Brave Women at
Work podcast, and offers coaching services to women who are looking to get
to the next level in their careers. You can listen to the Brave Women at
Work podcast on Apple, Google, Stitcher, and Spotify. Connect with Jen at
www.bravewomenatwork.com or via LinkedIn.

Inspirational Memoir
Publisher: Inspire-Books
Release Date: October 1, 2019
 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Hopey chronicles the story of a courageous girl in a ’70s Southern Indiana commune, complete with flowers for dinner, a ball of acid in the freezer, and orgies on the living room floor. The chaos of her formative years, which are littered with violent episodes, periods of hunger and assaults, leads Hope to set off on her own at the age of fifteen.

Written as intense past moments, reflective chapters, and flash-forwards, these three voices come together to transcend time and connect the past and the present. Honest and raw, with no request for empathy or complaint, the book is a celebration of the human spirit and an exhilarating read. Hopey is a reminder that we can love, we can believe, and we, too, can be successful beyond all expectations—if we only dare to hope.

EXCERPT

PREFACE

The material in this book is the truth, as I know it, as I saw it, and experienced it through my eyes. I know now as a par- ent that my perception of the truth is wildly different than my children’s. Therefore, I recognize that the other people’s memories of the events described are  different than my own. Everyone in this book is a lovely and decent human. The book was not intended to harm anyone, hurt anyone’s feelings, or portray them negatively. Everyone involved in the publication, marketing and support of this book all con- firm there is no intention of harm, hurt or disparagement.

I have changed names, made tweaks to settings and descriptions, to allow people to remain anonymous. There are two instances where I compressed time to support the flow and telling of the story. To the best of my ability I have remained honest to my perception of the truth.

Every childhood shapes a child. Mine was tumultuous, but here I am, standing strong and grateful. For that, I thank my mom, dad, husband, and all the people who helped me along the way.

I am now an executive, wife, and mother. I am blessed beyond measure to have a true partner in this life. My hus- band and I are raising our children, driving our careers, and loving each other unconditionally. He has accepted me for who I am, who I was, and he knows me.
