FLAME IN THE DARK BY FAITH HUNTER – REVIEW

flame in the dark cover
Set in the same world as Faith Hunter’s New York Times bestselling Jane Yellowrock novels, the third, thrilling Soulwood novel stars Nell Ingram, who draws her powers from deep within the earth.

Nell Ingram has always known she was different. Since she was a child, she’s been able to feel and channel ancient powers from deep within the earth. When she met Jane Yellowrock, her entire life changed, and she was recruited into PsyLED—the Homeland Security division that polices paranormals. But now her newly formed unit is about to take on its toughest case yet.

A powerful senator barely survives an assassination attempt that leaves many others dead—and the house he was visiting burns to the ground. Invisible to security cameras, the assassin literally disappears, and Nell’s team is called in. As they track a killer they know is more—or less—than human, they unravel a web of dark intrigue and malevolent motives that tests them to their limits and beyond.

Nell and the gang are back and trying to solve their most difficult case to date. Someone is trying to kill a senator and his family. The only clue to the identity of this assassin is they kill the vegetation where ever they walk. Also, Nell is faced with two suitors who want to date her. She has to decide if she is ready to take that next step in her life. Plus, this case will push Nell to test her powers to the limit and beyond. Faith Hunter is a master of her craft! I loved this book, and recommend it to everyone. I give Flame in the Dark (A Soulwood Novel) 5/5 stars.

COLD REIGN – BLOG TOUR

cold reign banner

Character Profile: Adelaide
Adelaide Mooney starts out as Shaddock’s heir’s (Dacy Mooney) blood-servant and daughter in life. She looks late twenties but is in her early 80’s. If she wants to keep her youth, it would be wise to be turned in the next decade.

She is taller than Jane with blue eyes that tint toward a delicate shade of lavender or cornflower blue. She wears perfect makeup and has flawless skin. She has an innate elegance and wears her blonde hair in a French twist, and her designer clothing tailored. Her hands are soft and delicate, fingers long and slender but powerful. She smells like Lincoln Shaddock’s blood, expensive perfume, money, and entitlement.

Adelaide is now Leo’s new primo.

And there’s another danger to the city. When she hears reports of revenant vampires, loose in NOLA and out for blood, Jane goes to put them down—and discovers there’s something unusual about these revenants. They never should have risen.

Jane must test her strength against a deadly, unnatural magic beyond human understanding, and a ruthless cadre of near-immortals whose thirst for power knows no bounds…

REVIEW

I was given a copy of this book by Netgalley for an honest review.
Cold Reign (Jane Yellowrock) is an example of Faith Hunter’s writing at her best. While Jane and the rest of her crew are getting everything ready for the European Delegation to show up, When someone starts raising revenants, but these are not your ordinary revenants. They are harder to kill. So who is raising them and why? Jane will be kept very busy in solving these questions and more. I love this series and the complexity of the characters. They are always evolving. My favorite character is Beast. You will not be disappointed with this book. I urge you to get it and the rest of the series if you have not read any of them. I give COLD REIGN 5/5 STARS.

BLOG TOUR- CURSE ON THE LAND

curse-on-the-land-banner

EXCERPT
After shaking the blanket open and snapping it to the ground, I sat in the middle of it with my knees crossed and the notebook and Psymeter2.0 in front of me. I synched the device to my cell and sent the recordings to U-18 HQ. I once again noted the date, time, and GPS location on the pad. It looked like I was taking scientific readings. It was utterly a cheat. I studied the land around me, noted a wildlife cam pointed at the pond, the remains of the kudzu-buried, tumbledown buildings on one edge of the property, and spotted the foundations of an old house near them in the pines across the pond. The brick showed signs of a long-ago fire. To my right, was a better-kept lean-to filled with farm equipment, a small tractor and gardening tools, all looking functional and which were secured with massive chains.

Placing my palm on the ground, I took a cleansing breath, blew it out, and relaxed.

Instantly I could tell that something wasn’t right, and in a way I had no immediate name for. The ground was . . . maybe sick, infested with something, some kind of parasite or illness. The earth beneath my palm felt cold, icy, not to the touch, but to the spirit, which wasn’t something I could easily explain to other people. It felt sick and murky and restless. As if it was dying, dying in pain. Alone and afraid.

I sent a soothing pulse of calm into the land, searching for the cause of the illness. Reaching down into the earth. I found the water source for the pond, an underground, degraded concrete pipe that ran along the low hill about halfway to the crest. The pipe system capped a spring there and collected the water, sending it down, through the pipe and into the pond for collection, probably for former use by farm animals. It was a slow trickle of water, and ran off on the far side, through another, smaller pipe, and into a gully. I dove deeper into the land. Below the surface of the hill, near the springhead, was an up-thrusting slab of granite angled toward the sky, driven up and broken during some unimaginable earthquake in the far past. It was now shored in place by accumulated layers of shattered rock and compacted soil all around the slab, softening its contours, creating the hillock.

REVIEW

I was given a copy of this book by Netgalley for an honest review.

Curse on the Land (A Soulwood Novel) is phenomenal!! Nell has grown some since the last book. Things have gotten weird. They are called out when a group of ducks are found swimming in a constant circle and others are coming up dead. Nell’s power is getting stronger and she has to learn to use it as she goes along, but when a curse is put on the land, she better learn fast. With the full moon coming up in a few days, things will start to get hairy and she might be a few people short on the case. I loved the ending with Rick, and that is all I will say about it. I love Faith’s writing and the way she presents Nell’s world. The world building is flawless. I cannot wait to see what she has in store for Nell and the gang next. If you have not picked up a Faith Hunter book, then you don’t know what you are missing. Go out and get your copy today!! I loved this book and give  CURSE ON THE LAND 5/5 STARS.

Blood of the Earth (A Soulwood Novel) is a great start to a new series! This is a spin-off of the Jane Yellowrock series. I have not read a book by Faith Hunter that I did not like. I don’t think she could write a bad novel! Rick LaFleur shows up on Nell’s doorstep per Jane’s referral.   His clues to the where about of the Nashville Blood Master. It has led him to the cult that Nell had once belonged to not far from her property that she lives at. I love the characters in this book, and seeing Lafleur and the others that are with him.  When I started this book, I could not put it down. If you have not enjoyed a Faith Hunter book, I urge you to go out and get your copy today. You will not be disappointed. I give BLOOD OF THE EARTH 5/5 STARS.
