Today Grandma had a busy day. My Aunt made arrangements to have the lady who usually cuts my grandma’s hair to come to her room at the west campus in Midland. My Grandmother was so excited to get her hair cut. She is doing better and better every day, Now that she is out of that place she was at. II don’t know when, it could be tomorrow. She is being transferred to Stanton at a Rehabilitation facility there. She has been having more spasticity in her arm and leg. They have her on muscle relaxers so it won’t be so painful for her.
With all the setbacks that she has had, infections, dehydration, pneumonia, and abuse, she has not had a lot of therapy on left her arm, and leg. Since she has been at the west campus, she has done a lot better. She has had the feeding tube removed from her stomach, and is eating solid food. It is either cut real small or is soft enough so that she can chew or swallow it easily without getting choked. Her left arm has moved on it’ own twice. This is good news. It means that the brain is trying to wakeup or make new pathways. This means that one day that she could suddenly just move her arm. That is why she needs the therapy to keep the muscles from becoming stiff and atrophy, so when it does happen she can move her arm.
If you set limits on yourself, you will never go beyond those limits and get better. If you tell yourself hat you will walk and move your arm one day. YOU WILL DO IT. You will have set backs along the way, that is only expected. The brain an heal itself if given the right tools to do it with, Nutrition, vitamins and minerals, exercise. There is still a lot we don’t know about the brain, or how it can heal itself. All I know right now is that I am happy that I still have my Grandmother still with us. So anyone in the family who reads this would like to visit her when she does get moved to the Stanton facility, It is called Stanton Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Today I went in for my follow-up with my Doctor after I put on different medications to help me lose weight. I told her about my blood pressure dropping several times earlier this year and last year in December and having chest pains with it. We talked in detail about how the chest pains felt? Did they wake me up or did I wake up because my back was hurting? On this question I told her the main reason I got up was to go to the bathroom to pee, and my back was hurting a little then. This last Tuesday April 29,2014, when I arrived home I took my blood pressure because my Nephew bought a new wrist blood pressure monitor. We were all trying it out, and my blood pressure read 130/84, and this was around 7pm at night. The machine kept reading my Nephew’s blood pressure as very high, so we thought it was not working right.
I read up on it and tried it gain at close to 9pm, and it read 96/65 . I wrote this number down so I could let the Doctor know what it read, and then I ate something salty to try to raise it. The reason for the salt was because nurse told my Grandfather to eat something salty and walk around to bring it up. So that is what I did. I took it again thirty minutes later and had come up to 108/78. This was a little better.
At the Doctor today she told me to quit taking two of my medicines for now, and she did an EKG to compare it with last year’s. There was no change in the reading. The Doctor does not think it is my heart, but she is sending me to a cardiologist so they can do a stress test with the dye. Also the cardiologist can run other tests that they can’t to rule out other things. She also did a breath test for H-Pylori that can mimic the same chest pains as a heart attack. She prescribed me Prilosec until the results come back. I also told her that I usually have high acid levels in the body, because I have noticed when they are high I can not eat certain foods. I also get mouth sores a lot.
So for now at least the Doctor doesn’t think it is my heart(YEAH!). We will know more when the test results come in and I a look so see the Cardiologist (May 22, 2014) and do the stress test and any other tests. For now I guess I will eat more yogurt. I will talk with everyone tomorrow(today). 🙂
I decided today I want to be lazy. The only important thing to do is going to the doctor and give him blood for some more tests. My sodium levels were low and my D3 levels were low and he wants to recheck them. After that I am taking my Nephew’s to Barnes and Nobles. I have not been in a while and one of my Nephew’s let me know that I have not taken him there in a long time.So we planned to go today.
I love the smell of a book store. I now wish that I had never left the one that I had worked at over 20 years ago. I had so much fun working there and finding new author’s to read. Every new shipment was like Christmas or my birthday. They say hindsight is 20/20, I always wanted to look up that saying and see how an where it originated. So lazy is my word of the day, and that is exactly what I plan on doing. I also plan on surfing other blogs to see what others are talking about today. What are you planning for today?
Just an update on how my Grandmother is doing. She is still in Health South Rehabilitation Center. They are so under staffed it is unreal. Grandma’s rehab has taken a set back because the first time was she became dehydrated. She is still unable to swallow, and they did not give her enough fluids while she was doing her Rehab. So she ended up collapsing , while they were trying to get her to stand up. Now she has an infection, that has set her back again. The Doctor was telling us that they might have to discharge her around Dec. 22 because she was not showing enough of an improvement.
We stated that how can she improve when they neglect to make sure she is adequately hydrated, and then the staff does not make sure the conditions are clean enough that she ends up getting an infection caused by feces in the wound of her feeding tube. Now they are doing one on one sessions with her with the therapists. The therapist that she really likes put muscle stimulator machine on her left leg , and her leg kicked up. He was really happy. He said that was the best he has seen in there at that facility. He asked my Grandmother if she could kick her leg up, and she told him to come closer and she would kick him. He replied that he would let her kick him if it would get her to walking. The therapist also told us he would talk with the Doctors in regards to her progress, so I have a feeling if he says she has to stay then they will probably have to keep her in there.
She is also talking a lot clearer to were you can understand her and hear her now. It is still going to be a long road to recovery. We just have to have patience and not wear ourselves out trying to care for her and my Grandfather.
Well it seems that I will start back to work next week. I have been cleared by the Doctor to return to work with restrictions that I don’t lift anything over 20 pounds. I also have some vacation time I need to use before February or I lose it. So, I might take that before I actually go back so I don’t have to stop and start again. I have to go back and talk to them tomorrow. They are trying to find a place for me within the lifting restrictions, since I cannot lift over 20 pounds and I cannot sit or stand for long periods of time. They also have to find something that will be flexible around my availability and my physical therapy.
I know I have to go back so I can get a full paycheck, but I am not looking forward to all the drama at work. Hopefully I will get my morning schedule back. I loved working the 5am-2pm shift, it was the perfect shift in which I still had the afternoon to get what I needed done. I can just hope. I have to get ready for bed so I can get up for physical therapy tomorrow at 8:30 am. Goodnight.
