About the Author

Abigail Elizabeth Black

Abigail believes in the power of a good book. A good book can take readers of any age on an adventure that will stay with them forever. That is the goal she has for her books, to provide a lasting adventure. Her inspiration stems from reading Ella Enchanted over and over again until the pages started falling apart, and of course traveling through the wardrobe into Narnia age after age. When she’s not teaching or working on continuing her own education. She’s filled boxes of notebooks with stories, and it wasn’t until she was stuck at home that she eventually self-published her first book Adelyn’s Amazing Adventures. When she isn’t writing she’s crocheting, reading fantasy, scanning through Pinterest, and drinking coffee.

Did you ever dream of traveling to an alternate universe? I actually did it. I am the Bear, high school kid.

Excerpt

Do you have a library card for the public library here in town?” Everett asked.

No, sir. I’m, uh, not welcome in there.”

Everett’s brow furrowed. “Why not? I would think they’d love a bookworm like you.”

I think they did, to start. But they caught me trying to sleep in there a couple of times and the last time I was told I could not come back.” Coupe looked up at Everett a little defensively. “I wasn’t stealing anything if that’s what you were thinking. It’s just it was wintertime and it was cold. I couldn’t go down to the river then and I… well, I didn’t want to go home either.”

Everett felt a wave of sympathy for the boy. He was still going to be stacking firewood, though. “I didn’t think you were stealing.” He paused, thinking. “Coupe I wish I had known of you back then. We would have helped.”

I know you would have. Well, I know that now.” Now it was Coupe’s turn to think. “In a way it turned out to be a good thing that my mother dumped me when she did.”

I expect that’s a tough thing to deal with either way, Coupe, but yeah, that’s a good way to look at it, I suppose. We’re happy to have you.”

Thanks.”

No more fighting though, okay? You come to me or Evelyn. You don’t want to have the police involved.”

Yes, sir.”

They were passing the public library as they drove home. Everett slowed and pulled into the parking lot.

C’mon, Coupe, let’s see if we can get your reading privileges back.”

Coupe brightened. “You think so?”

No harm in trying,” he replied as he parked.

The two got out and walked into the library. As they approached the circulation desk a woman looked up at them both, then she recognized Coupe and a stern look came across her face. Before she could speak, Everett started to plead Coupe’s case.

Hi, I’m Everett Callister. I think you know this young man. I wanted to see if I could get him his library card back. You see, he’s living with us now. I’m his foster dad. He told me why he was not allowed back in here. I think you should know his circumstances were pretty rough back then. But he’s with us now. He’s a good kid and he loves reading. Is there any way he could start borrowing books again?”

The librarian looked at Everett as if sizing him up. “Did he tell you we found him sleeping in the back of the non-fiction section…on more than one occasion?”

He did. It was pretty cold out. Did he tell you he had nowhere else to go?”

The librarian’s face softened. “He did not.” She thought for a moment. “I suppose if he is always supervised by you while he is here he can start coming back in…on a probationary basis to start with.”

Excellent.”

They left the library with a brand-new card and five more books. Coupe was positively beaming. Everett had insisted he got one on the basics of small engine repairs. He was hoping Coupe might be able to help him with some…projects.

Excerpt

Rosita, I need to borrow your friend. Okay with you?”

Si,” she said, and a shy smile crept on to her face. “You want me to save your food, Leisha?”

I shook my head and picked up my tray to dump it. My stomach felt like a bunch of heavy stones were clanking around in there.

Meet you out by the stairs,” Cody said.

What’s this about?” I eyed him warily, not at all sure I was up to talking with Cody when I felt this vulnerable, and… and well, when it was getting harder and harder to keep my distance.

You,” he said in a low voice.

I should have flat refused to follow him up the stairs to the second floor. No one else would be hanging up there on a Saturday, and it definitely wasn’t a good idea to let myself be alone with Cody. But my willpower had mysteriously disappeared. Up the stairs and down the hall I went.

Cody lounged on a window seat and pulled me down to sit next to him. Outside, the sky was smudged with gray, and the tree branches drooped under the weight of the snow. I sighed. I was drooping too.

Cody’s hand was warm, strong, callused. No! Not going there. I pulled my hand away from his and carefully inched away. “You’ve got five minutes,” I said, determined not to let him see that his touch made every hair on the back of my neck prickle. Better to make him believe I was the original ice queen.

Okay, tough girl, I know you were crying in there. Let me in. I care about you, damn-it!”

He leaned toward me and touched my cheek, and I closed my eyes for a moment. Then I grabbed his hand in my own, and I couldn’t help it. I held on tight. “It’s… it’s Ms. Wells.” I spilled out everything I knew, which was not much. “I need to find her. This is going to sound crazy, but I think she’s in trouble.” I shivered and made myself let go of his hand.

He gazed at me somberly. “She never would have left without talking to you. I used to like watching her watch you. It was almost like you were the daughter she never had.”

Tears burned behind my eyelids. That’s how I’d felt about her—like she was filling up a pocket in my heart that had only held longing for the mama I’d never known.

Cody pulled me in close.

My whole body tensed. I could not let this happen.

It’s okay,” he said. “This is strictly a brotherly hug.”

Yeah, right. But being in his arms felt too good to pull away. He smelled like fresh laundry mixed in with the woodsy scent of the rosin he used on his cello strings.

We’re going to figure out what happened,” he murmured in my ear.

I snapped my head back to stare at him. “What do you mean ‘we’?”

He grinned. “Every great detective needs a sidekick. I’ve just appointed myself yours.”

Demanding spirits barged their way into her mind, each voice trying to outdo the other.

Please stop,” Aries said through clenched teeth, and for a moment they went away, and she basked in the silence. But as soon as she took a step toward the school, their clamor started back up.

She ran behind a row of palm trees, shielding herself from streams of cars and pedestrians, as the high-pitched aggravation attacked her senses. “Not today, please not today,” she begged no one in particular.

Out of sight, she dropped to her knees and began picking at the grass as the noise escalated. “Dammit. I said stop.”

Giving in, she put her hands in her lap. With her index finger she started to write the alphabet on her leg. She needed deep concentration to make the connection. She waited for a clear voice to come through, dreading, yet at the same time accepting, communication with the dead.

After tracing a Z on her leg, she started over with A, as a faint whisper formed. Unable to make out any words, she slowed her pace and drew the letter B. She kept repeating this action, taking deeper breaths each time, trying to match the frequency of the spirit. She had almost given up when a clear voice said, “You need to find out the truth, Aries.”

About the Author

LL Lewin

A native of Southern California, LL Lewin was born in Los Angeles County and grew up in Orange County. She graduated from the University California, Irvine with a degree in psychology and social behavior. After teaching for several years and interacting with the youth almost daily, she was inspired to write a young adult mystery novel, which morphed into a little bit more. Since things happen in threes for her (her initials, triple Sagittarius, the third born) the novel turned into a trilogy and reaffirmed her belief that three’s a charm.

She loves all things astrological, metaphysical, and spiritual. With her sun, moon, and rising all in the sign of Sagittarius, she’s as Sagittarius as they come, optimistic, freedom-loving, and ever so tactless.

Her three passions in life are writing, traveling, and soccer. You’ll either find her writing at the beach, on an island somewhere, or on a soccer field. And her three vices are chocolate, pizza, and champagne, and not necessarily in that order.
