A betrayal…a secret baby….an unknown imposter…will Tess survive the wagon train journey to Sunset Hills, Oregon after her life is threatened? And if so, what will she do once she gets there?

1855. Tess Findlay can’t wait to be reunited with her beau who went out west three months ago to mine for gold, saying he’d send for her soon. Even though she hasn’t heard from him, she’s discovered she’s with child and decides to join a wagon train to travel to Oregon to surprise him with the news.

When a band of robbers holds up the caravan, Tess is shocked to recognize her beau as one of the outlaws. He warns her that someone on the wagon train isn’t who they seem but before he can reveal the person’s identity he is killed in a gunfight. Who can Tess trust? She is drawn to widowed physician Garrett Kincaid but fears for her life and that of her unborn child. Besides, what man would ever want a woman who is carrying another man’s baby?

Garrett Kincaid is looking forward to bringing his youngest nephew, Jacob, to join his sister and brother-in-law out west. His sister begged him to care for her young son until the rest of the family got settled in Sunset Hills. The time is right for them to make the journey. There is nothing left in Kansas now for Garrett, anyway, not since his wife died of typhoid. He’s always wanted to start his own medical clinic, and Sunset Hills seems like the perfect place.

However, after the wagon train is robbed, Garrett realizes he will have to do everything in his power to help the group arrive safely. When his nephew befriends a beautiful young woman, Garrett can’t help but wonder why she is traveling alone. Can he discover her secrets without scaring her away? And he is ready to love again?

EXCERPT

Tess knew she had no choice but to admit the truth–to herself as well as her aunt. She followed Augusta’s brisk walk down the hallway leading to the front room. Augusta drew back the curtains from the wide window, allowing the morning sun to throw a dim light of hope into the small expanse. Augusta took a seat in one of the wingback chairs and crossed her arms. Tess made herself as comfortable as she could on the sofa beneath her aunt’s all-too-knowing gaze.

“Do you have anything you would like to tell me?” Augusta asked sternly.

Tess gulped and hung her head. “I believe I’m with child,” she said quietly.

“Dirk’s, then?”

Tess thought she detected a hint of sadness in her aunt’s voice if she wasn’t mistaken. She nodded. “Yes.” Unable to help herself, she burst into tears.

“Oh, Auntie! He’s on his way out west to join the mining expedition in Oregon. He said he was going to send for me once he got settled in Sunset Hills. But now… I can’t wait until then, can I? I’m sure he would marry me right away if he knew about the baby!”

“Are you planning to go to him as soon as possible, then?” asked Augusta, her own blue eyes unreadable.

“I don’t think I have any choice, do I?” Tess said.

REVIEW – A MESS OF REASON BY A. WILDING WELLS

A MESS OF REASON“Witty”, “romantic”, “sexy” and “soul-swelling”.

An addictive heartfelt novel with a bold voice that will have you laughing out loud one minute then grabbing for tissue the next. An unforgettable romance with twists so emotionally wrought and endearing that they’ll make you weep. Get ready to carve out a chunk of your heart for Scout and Tess’s genuinely moving best-friend-turned-lover romance. This is an “I love you” like you’ve never read before. It’s not a story, it’s a sexy romance novel game changer.
“Scout Steele is the country music star People magazine just voted ‘sexiest bachelor’. More than that, he’s my best friend forever, my bff. OK, not quite my lingo – I’m almost thirty. We’ve shared everything, and then some. Even crossed the line a few times, but not too far. Well, mostly…. He’ll go to the end of the world to make me happy; he knows me inside and out. Except, that is, my most intimate and darkest defect; this he must never know. It would ruin us, and ‘us’ is the only thing that matters. So I’m marrying someone who doesn’t care about the truth or, frankly, even me.”
“She’s twisted and sexy as all get out. Brilliant and beautiful, Tess Harlow is my best friend and my forbidden fruit – the woman I’ve always known and loved the best but can never have. Between my tours (and sexy groupies) and her man-juggling, we’ve never found “our time”. I love her to pieces but she’s about to marry the bane of my existence, rocker Creed Luce. He’s a walking cliché and he treats my Tess like hell – why she stays with him I still haven’t figured out. I am always there for her…but not this time. Tess deserves better, way better, my better. The door is half-open and I have my ways. Her best friend is about to become her best lover.”

BOOK DESCRIPTION COURTESY OF AMAZON

I was given a copy of this book by the Author for an honest review.

I loved A MESS OF REASON! The characters and story grabbed me from the first page. If you have been in love with your best friend since school, would you jeopardize your friendship to tell her?  Scout is about to get to that moment. He does not like the man who Tess Harlow is marrying. What can he do? He cannot let her marry that douche bag! Stryker and me are going to be the only males at her bachelorette  party. I can’t take anymore of her fiancée, and the way he treats her. Will I lose her forever when I tell her. I love Scout and Tess. Tess is also carrying around a secret that she has told no-one about. If she lets Scout know, she knows he will leave her. I recommend this book, and it is a great story. I give A MESS OF REASON 5 /5 STARS.
