About Hot Shade:

In the tropical Florida heat, a man with deadly secrets falls for a lovely, inquisitive reporter.

When an Italian journalist’s expose of his country’s mafia puts him on the run for his life, he hides out in an exclusive Florida Keys enclave. But his defenses are breached by a reporter searching out the scoop of her life. Can he convince her to trade headlines for the passion growing between them … or will her investigation open the gates to peril from his past?

After Luca Rossi lost everything to the Italian mafia, he used all his skills to write a stunning expose, and managed to put a key don on trial for his life. But now Luca must hide out on the Florida coast until justice is served in Italy. All is well, until he meets a lovely young American reporter who won’t stop asking questions about who he is. Soon he’s fighting the urge to hush her with a kiss … and much, much more.

Skylar Shaw took a job with a small Florida paper determined to make her mark on the journalistic world. She may spend her days writing up alligator scares and human interest stories, but when she meets a handsome mystery man on the beach, she’s not afraid to dig into his past, and the danger stalking him from across the seas. There’s just one problem … will her efforts help Luca, or bring danger straight to him?

Luca knows all too well the journalistic drive to keep digging. Can he trust his lovely Skylar to keep his secrets, or must he push her away to save both their lives?

Excerpt

“Sky, I can’t get you out of my head,” he whispered into her ear. “I thought about you nonstop while I was in Miami.”

He plundered her mouth, and she greedily accepted it, wanting more of his sweet taste.

Luca’s other hand wound its way up her dress, and his fingers raked over the thin fabric of her black cotton panties. Sky turned her head so he could claim her neck with his mouth, trying not to gasp out loud as he stroked the outline of her labia with a delicate and tantalizing touch. Her clit throbbed and she wanted him to rub it, but when she tried to move his hand into her panties he resisted.

“Please,” Sky whispered. “Please?”

Luca shook his head and kept teasing her, brushing his fingers over her with a feather-light touch as he inhaled her neck with ferocity. She pressed her face into his shoulder, and biting him was the only way she could keep from crying out loud from pleasure.

Why was he doing this to her here? Did she even care why? Skylar grabbed his head and pulled his lips close, wanting to consume him.

She rubbed the heel of her hand over his jeans, feeling his hard length under the rough denim. When she folded her arms around his neck, he took his hand from between her legs. He simultaneously hoisted her up as she gracefully jumped, wrapping her legs around his waist. Grinding his hips into hers, she felt only white-hot need as they rocked their bodies together.

“Luca…” She gasped, barely able to form words through her thin breaths. “Oh, fuck, Luca.”

His lips grazed her neck and rested just underneath her earlobe. It was a good thing he had pinned her to the wall, otherwise she would have crumpled to the floor when he again whispered in her ear with that accent, “I have actually, physically craved you. It’s as if I need you to live, like air or water or food. Ti desidero.”

Abruptly, he stopped. Eased her down. Backed up about a foot.

He was grinning. He licked the corner of his mouth and leaned in for a soft kiss. Skylar panted and was about to ask him what he was doing when he kissed her again.

“See you tomorrow night at yoga,” he whispered in her ear. Then he walked out of the bathroom. As the door closed, she watched him enter the men’s room across the hall.

Skylar was flushed and flustered. Her hair was wild. Her entire body trembled, and between her legs she was a wet, slippery mess. Leaning back on the wall, she tried to catch her breath. Being this intensely, obviously sexual was so foreign to her. Never had she felt this with James, or with anyone. Luca made her want to unleash every sexual fantasy she had, and lately, she had lots of them. This all-consuming need pushed Skylar to the edge of her comfort zone, yet she would be lying if she said she wasn’t enjoying it wholly. She was.

Maybe too much.

Exclusive Excerpt:

The reporter’s press pass dangled in between her breasts and a red bikini flashed like a stop sign under her white dress. Luca rubbed his lips together. His hand went instinctively to his hip, and he realized with a pang of unease that he’d left his gun on the terrace. Exhaling, he hated himself for automatically being so paranoid. This woman wasn’t a threat. She was just a young reporter. An amateur.

He shook his head and tried to ignore her pretty face. His eyes settled on a clump of sand clinging to her knee, and he was struck by an overwhelming desire to brush it off with his fingers and then run his entire hand up her smooth leg. “I don’t want to be in the paper.”

She flashed a little smile, and her gaze lingered on his chest. Oh. Right. He wasn’t wearing a shirt. Her eyes shifted to the tattoo on his left bicep, her smile grew wider and her gaze skittered to the ground.

“My name’s Skylar. You can call me Sky. I understand that you don’t want to be quoted, but could you tell me anything off the record?”

When she raised her eyes he was struck by their pale blue hue, the color of the Gulf on a clear day, a startling and beautiful contrast with her chestnut-colored hair. Luca stepped back, shook his head again and smiled despite himself. “I don’t do off the record. People should never talk to the media, you know.”

She laughed. “Ohh, come on. I’m one of the good reporters. I won’t misquote you.”

“Really? Don’t all reporters say that? Why should I trust you?”

She stopped laughing, which was too bad, because the sound was sweet as honey in Luca’s ears. She blinked and stared at his hand, which was suspended in mid-air because he was trying to make a point while talking. He lowered his hand, suddenly self-conscious of the broad way he gestured.

“Trust me? Of course you can trust me. And, anyway, I’m really looking for the person who helped the man hit by the plane. One of the paramedics said he was young and maybe had a tattoo.”

Luca shrugged when she pointed to his arm. She couldn’t make him talk.

“You have an accent,” she said, undeterred. “Where are you from?”

He swallowed, not prepared that she would try to get so personal so soon. “Europe,” he muttered.

“Well, that narrows it down.” She grinned and rummaged through her straw tote bag then handed him a business card. Plucking it from her fingers, Luca studied every inch of her face. Even the freckles on her nose were adorably sexy.

He glanced down and read her card aloud. “‘Skylar Shaw. The Palmira Post.’”

She took a pen and notebook out of her bag. The pen’s end was frayed with bite marks. Luca arched an eyebrow. He longed to flirt but knew he shouldn’t, for all sorts of reasons.

EXCERPT

I was not dressed for a dinner at home.
My red-and-white gingham cotton dress was a 1950s silhouette, tight in the bodice, with an off-the-shoulder neckline and a full skirt. I hadn’t worn it in years and was honestly surprised it still fit. I clasped a demure choker of pearls around my neck and swept my hair up in a messy updo, with curly tendrils framing my face.
I was aiming for a touch of seduction. Maybe not a full, end-up-horizontal-in-bed seduction, because I didn’t think either one of us was quite ready for that yet.
Although I wouldn’t push him away, if that’s what he wanted.
I did want to look alluring enough to pique my husband’s interest—or, if possible, his memory. I tried on a pair of nude heels, but that was a little much for making stuffed pasta shells in my own kitchen, even for me. I slipped on pale pink ballet flats instead. I looked in the mirror and turned, sucking in my stomach. Not bad, considering everything. It was the first time I’d worn one of my vintage dresses in ages. Somehow, the retro-style didn’t seem to fit who I was anymore.
A wife. A mom. A woman with a complicated life. I shrugged at myself in the mirror. I’d deal with my wardrobe later. Or not. Because fashion no longer mattered.
My step was light as I left the master bedroom and walked into the living room.
Caleb was there—his family had collected Charlotte an hour earlier, saying they wanted us to have some “alone time”—sitting on the sofa. He looked simple and perfect, in a pair of dark-washed jeans and a black T-shirt.
He stood quickly and his mouth dropped open. “Oh! Wow.”
“You’re saying that a lot today,” I responded playfully. I didn’t want to let on that I was scared enough to throw up. It was as if we were on a first date, only during our first date, I’d been confident we’d end up in bed that evening. Tonight, I wasn’t sure what would unfold.
He stroked his chin. “Yeah. I am saying that a lot. Everything’s a surprise around here.”
I smiled, my first hurdle cleared. “Thanks.”
We stood and stared at each other, the silence between us filled with sexual static. Or so I thought. I wasn’t sure of anything anymore, truthfully. I didn’t know what to say, and he probably didn’t either. To him, I was a stranger in his house.

“Let me have her.” I held my hands in the direction of Colin, who’d been pacing with Charlotte in his arms. She was the only happy person in the room and had entertained herself for the past ten minutes by chewing on her fist.
He deposited her into my arms and resumed pacing. She grabbed at my chunky silver necklace and lunged for my curls. I knew she wanted to play peek-a-boo in my hair because lately that was her favorite entertainment.
“No, babykins. Let’s leave Mommy’s hair alone for tonight.” I swept my curls back with my free hand, and she giggled into my chest. My hair had grown even longer in Caleb’s absence, since I hadn’t had the desire to do anything with it. But my hair didn’t matter, Charlotte’s slobbery little mouth didn’t matter, nothing mattered. We were about to be a family—for the first time.
A surge went through me. I was giddy. Manic, even, at the thought of Caleb’s return.
I blew a fart noise on Charlotte’s cheek and she laughed more.
Bouncing Charlotte on my hip, we turned again to the window, and she reached her chubby hand to the glass, as if trying to touch the night. I’d dressed her in a frothy, hot pink dress with a tulle skirt. She looked unbearably adorable, and it would be impossible for Caleb not to recognize his own child with big blue eyes so identical to his.
Colin’s phone buzzed. “It’s him.” He inhaled sharply, then answered and grinned. “Hey. Yeah, we’re all here. Okay.” He hung up. “Caleb and Dad and Mom are in the lobby.”
Laura gave a little muffled cry and hugged Sarah, who stared hard at me over Laura’s shoulder.
“I’m fine,” I mouthed to her, not feeling fine at all. I kissed Charlotte’s cheek. “Daddy’s home,” I whispered, trying not to shake too much. Charlotte seemed unusually heavy.
After a few seconds, a nervous, barking laugh escaped my lips. “How long does it take for the elevator to crawl up here?”
No one responded.
Then, the ding of the elevator bell.
The sliding open of the doors.
And my husband walked in.

EXCERPT

“Emma!” Colin burst into the room, making me yelp in surprise at the sound of his deep voice. In Caleb’s absence, I’d taken to wearing pajamas to bed—there was no one to sleep naked for—and today, I was thankful.

“Are you okay?” He reached for my shoulder, and I shrank away, remembering how his touch had singed my skin in the dream. I glanced up and was relieved to see his smooth face, that he hadn’t somehow grown a dark goatee since I’d last seen him.

“I’m fine.” I shuddered, fixing big eyes on him, wondering why he was here. Then it hit me: it had been Colin’s turn to stay the night with me, and he’d slept in the guest bedroom. Although my vitals had calmed in the past few days, I wondered what they’d be if someone wrapped a blood pressure cuff around my arm now, after that crazy nightmare.

“Are you crying?” he demanded. He was dressed in gym clothes—dark grey sweatpants that hugged his thighs and a white T-shirt. I raised my gaze and spied his thick bicep, then quickly squeezed my eyes shut and flopped back onto the pillows, turning my back to him. I was so hugely pregnant it took me a couple of rolls to flip on my side.

“Don’t you have to go to work soon?” I mumbled into the duvet, which was in a heap.

“It’s Saturday, Emma. I’ll work a little from here, but I’ll be around in case you need anything. Seriously, are you okay?”

I sighed. I’d never before felt so out of control in my body before. The baby kicked like crazy; my sex drive was through the roof; and most of all, I missed Caleb so much I ached all over, as if I’d run a marathon. Most of the time, I wanted to unzip my skin and walk out of it, I felt so uneasy.

Unable to look at Colin, I cleared my throat in response. My heart pounded against my ribcage. Could he sense what I’d been dreaming about? I sniffled. Did I smell like arousal? Jesus, I hoped not.

“You’re crying. I heard you,” he insisted, sitting on the far edge of the bed.

I squirmed to face him and opened my eyes reluctantly. Colin’s head was bent, and he raked a hand through his black hair.

“I just had a nightmare, that’s all.” I shrugged, staring at the ceiling.

“Again?”

Why did he have to sound so worried?
